Sodom - New Lineup Announced, Blackfire Returns

German metallers Sodom started 2018 with major changes as Tom Angelripper parted ways with their drummer and guitarist . But the band will go on as a quartet and have hired new guns. Guitarist Frank "Blackfire" Gosdzik has rejoined the group, with Stefan "Husky" Hüskens (Asphyx, Desaster) set to be the man behind the drum kit, and Yorck Segatz (Beyondition) also joining on guitar. A new single will be out in the summer 2018, with a new album to follow in the spring 2019.

The band posted this statement on Facebook: "While rumours are still flying thick and fast in the media, Tom Angelripper has already announced the new line-up of his band Sodom: Husky (Asphyx, Desaster) is set to man the drum kit, Frank Blackfire (ex-Sodom, ex-Kreator, Frank Blackfire, Assassin) and Yorck Segatz (Beyondition) have been enlisted on guitars. Sodom have already released seminal albums such as Persecution Mania, the live cut Mortal Way Of Live and the highly successful Agent Orange with Frank Blackfire. As he had hinted at the beginning of the year, Tom has opted for a line-up featuring two guitarists, an absolute novelty for Sodom. 'Two guitarists allow us much more possibilities live, so we will be able to play tracks in future that we weren't able to perform as a trio,' the Sodom vocalist/bassist explains his motives. In line with these new possibilities, the thrash act has already started to put together a setlist for the upcoming shows with all important classics as well as rare numbers that had never or only rarely been heard at their gigs. Says Tom: 'I can promise that we will really let it rip in future.'

"In Frank Blackfire, Yorck Segatz and Husky, Tom has consciously gone for musicians from his own background. 'It's common knowledge that all three are exceptional instrumentalists and that heavy metal is their life. But Sodom is also about getting on a personal level. The new band members are all dyed-in-the-wool Sodom fans and all live in Essen. Need I say more?'

"While the guys have just moved into their new rehearsal room (Tom: 'As it happens exactly where it all started back in 1982!'), the Sodom mastermind is already looking to the future. 'We'll start writing new material as soon as possible and plan to release a single with at least two brand-new numbers and a bonus track to give our fans a taste of our upcoming album,' he promises. 'The direction of the new material already stands: ready for action and full of adrenaline, Sodom are set to celebrate the glorious days of the 1980s old school thrash that we all grew up with and that the band has always been celebrated for.'"

According to his profile here Husky was never in Asphyx. Nice to see Blackfire back, but Im not expecting anything new and exciting.

Someone made two profiles for Husky. The other one doesn't have the alias 'Husky' in it, but it's connected to Asphyx, as far as I could see. It was too much information to add for me to do to at the time of adding the new line up to the Sodom page.

I rather he would have just hired Blackfire without firing the other two.

Its awesome to hear Blackfire is back. In my opinion Sodom created its best material when he was in the band.

However its hard for me to expect anything more than a repeat of themselves from Sodom at this point. Is it a bad thing ? meh, i'll still get their record and listen to it frequently..

Man, first Judas Priest and now Sodom? I gotta say, 2018 looks like it's gonna have some decent releases so far.

Considering what a primadonna move Blackfire pulled last time he was in Sodom, I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't last long.
I liked Bernemann's songwriting although he was hit/miss live, especially on the leads on the old stuff (yikes!).
I think Andy Brinks and Atomic Steif was probably the best lineup from technical standpoint, although I grew up and still listen mostly to the 80s Sodom records and M-16.
Maybe it would've been interesting to hear what Bernemann and the drummer had written before he booted them, but the anniversary of their most successful album is coming up so I guess that's why Frank is back. I don't think he'll last long, he considers himself quite the rock star.
