Germany, Wacken - Wacken Open Air 2009

Location: Germany, Wacken (Festivalgelände)
Date: 29 July 2009 - 01 August 2009
Website: wacken.com
Organizer: ICS Event Service

Tickets:

SOLD OUT!!

20 years! 20 fucking years! That's how long the Wacken Open Air exists already. And it has come a long way from a garden party with 800 guests and 6 bands to the biggest metal festival in the world with more than 75,000 visitors and close to 70 bands performing on four stages. Said stages have seen performances by nearly every important band in the world of metal as well as numerous underground acts, so expectations are quite high for this year's lineup. Already confirmed are several fan favorites from the previous editions, such as Saxon, Motörhead, Machine Head, In Flames and Doro who has announced a special Warlock show. Further highlights are the two hour farewell show of metal veterans Running Wild, who will show the young lads how pirate metal is really done, and the performance of recently reunited viking metal legends Einherjer. And as always the lineup will please metalheads of every age: the older folks will be delighted by the confirmations of Heaven And Hell and UFO while Bullet For My Valentine, Walls Of Jericho and Bring Me The Horizon represent the newest generation of metal(-related) music.

The namesake and host of the festival is the small town of Wacken in Northern Germany. For just short of a week the town's population skyrockets from a mere 2,000 souls and turns the village into the world's metal mecca. The town is located 10 km north of Itzehoe and 50 km north/west of Hamburg. There will be shuttle buses from the festival site to the train station in Itzehoe as well as to the airports in both Hamburg and Lübeck. For more info on getting there and away check the festival page here.

The festival is sold out since December already. If you haven't got your ticket yet, but want to go there nonetheless, you can circumvent the black marketing going on eBay and reduce the risk of acquiring fake tickets by using the ticket exchange in the official forum. In this exchange the Wacken staff supervises the ticket prices and acts as trust which means that the seller sends the ticket(s) to the staff who verifies the authenticity of the ticket(s) and reports it to the buyer. After the buyer has transferred the money to the seller, the Wacken staff will pass on the ticket(s) to the buyer. More information on this model can be found here (in German).

Ok, now it really starts getting ridiculous. They announced Kampfar and Korpiklaani today. Even my Spirit starts dropping if it goes on like that.

But what did you expect? The Wacken organisation can book third rate bands because they know it will sell out no matter what. And alll those bands are cheaper than good and big bands, so they will make a profit. But if this is an anniversary show why don't they try to get some really big one-off reunion shows? And make something truly special out of it all?

And alll those bands are cheaper than good and big bands, so they will make a profit. But if this is an anniversary show why don't they try to get some really big one-off reunion shows? And make something truly special out of it all?

The Wacken team book what the people want to see. They have an online poll after every festival as part of a feedback form you can use to express a band wish or two. And they try to get the bands that are most asked for. Unfortunately the audience in Wacken is getting younger each year. There's a certain popularity about it and many people who don't even listen to the music go there because they want to see what it's like. That's to blame on the media resonance in the last couple of years and the movie "full metal village". Many of the old 'classic' wacken folks have turned to other festivals and don't even look at Wacken anymore. That might be one part.
Another thing that has occured to me over the years is this odd metal-fashion thing. A few years ago, many of the younger folks there were listening predominantly to black metal. Mostly accompanied by some 'I don't care for the band as long as it's loud and hard' attitude. That changed to following any random death/metalcore combo in recent years. And you could always measure that by looking at (for example) the Wacken lineup. And now there's this really annoying folk metal movement that slowly takes over the whole metal world. It's like for every good band I get to know, I stumble upon ten new (new to me that is) folk metal bands that all annoy the crap outta me. But the people want to see them. And even to a point where there were 'boo'-cries during a slow passage of Wacken 07's Haggard performance. These people don't seem to apprechiate good music as in the old days anymore. I just don't want a Wacken that is only about loud and hard. There always was a certain standard to metal for me. The people that introduced me to it were all deeply rooted in their music, appreciating the musical as well as the lyrical arts of it.
I just kinda want that old feeling back

@corrupt, you can forget about getting the old feeling back. But I know exactly what you mean. It happened to me with Dynamo Open Air which I attended from the first edition onwards to the one that drew over 130,000 people. The festival's own popularity became its own demise. The same thing will happen to Wacken I am sure.

They have been on sale a while and a lot have already been sold, so if you are going to come - order your ticket soon!!
I've never had to buy a ticket, but I assume it is reliable - it worked for 70,000 people last year.

Like I say every single year. "Wacken ALWAYS goes for the safe names"
Wacken really is the most mainstream metal festival around. It even outdoes Ozzfest on that part cause although there's a lot of metalcore on Ozzfest they always have a lot of unknown metalcore bands as well.

Hahahaha, well, I will keep on repeating myself here as long as people are still surprised by the sorts of bands Wacken adds to their line-up

But if it's only people you're lacking, that can be fixed.

I really would go, but none of my friends is interessed, and being alone in a festival really sucks (specially for a girl when everybody is dead drunk around)
so I don't know what to do...

A tip from me: You live in france => You go to the Hellfest...

People believe me it's the good thing to do

Well, going to Hellfest don't forbidd to go to Wacken TO does it ?
Besides, it's exactly the same problem for both, having discovered metal by myself, I have only one metalhead friend, and I'm sure he won't come with me... (life is a bitch!)
