Germany, Wacken - Wacken Open Air 2009

Location: Germany, Wacken (Festivalgelände)
Date: 29 July 2009 - 01 August 2009
Website: wacken.com
Organizer: ICS Event Service

Tickets:

SOLD OUT!!

20 years! 20 fucking years! That's how long the Wacken Open Air exists already. And it has come a long way from a garden party with 800 guests and 6 bands to the biggest metal festival in the world with more than 75,000 visitors and close to 70 bands performing on four stages. Said stages have seen performances by nearly every important band in the world of metal as well as numerous underground acts, so expectations are quite high for this year's lineup. Already confirmed are several fan favorites from the previous editions, such as Saxon, Motörhead, Machine Head, In Flames and Doro who has announced a special Warlock show. Further highlights are the two hour farewell show of metal veterans Running Wild, who will show the young lads how pirate metal is really done, and the performance of recently reunited viking metal legends Einherjer. And as always the lineup will please metalheads of every age: the older folks will be delighted by the confirmations of Heaven And Hell and UFO while Bullet For My Valentine, Walls Of Jericho and Bring Me The Horizon represent the newest generation of metal(-related) music.

The namesake and host of the festival is the small town of Wacken in Northern Germany. For just short of a week the town's population skyrockets from a mere 2,000 souls and turns the village into the world's metal mecca. The town is located 10 km north of Itzehoe and 50 km north/west of Hamburg. There will be shuttle buses from the festival site to the train station in Itzehoe as well as to the airports in both Hamburg and Lübeck. For more info on getting there and away check the festival page here.

The festival is sold out since December already. If you haven't got your ticket yet, but want to go there nonetheless, you can circumvent the black marketing going on eBay and reduce the risk of acquiring fake tickets by using the ticket exchange in the official forum. In this exchange the Wacken staff supervises the ticket prices and acts as trust which means that the seller sends the ticket(s) to the staff who verifies the authenticity of the ticket(s) and reports it to the buyer. After the buyer has transferred the money to the seller, the Wacken staff will pass on the ticket(s) to the buyer. More information on this model can be found here (in German).

Bwahahahahahahahah!!!! Oh my goodness, this is so damn awesome, I just can't stop laughing!!!

Especially after reading their news announcement. "Endlich! Bullet for my Valentine in Wacken!"
Which means "Finally, BfMV in Wacken". What are those guys thinking?

This festival really is turning out to be that joke for a Wacken 2009 that was going around before they started announcing bands.

Still, there's time. We'll see if it gets better.

According to rumours Scorpions are to be confirmed soon. Or perhaps they already are. I can't really verify as the Wacken page is down.

Ah well, don't put too much belief in my rumours anyway. Unless they are about Ragnarök they are far from reliable

Bullet For My Valentine confirmed

cmon! whats wrong with BfmV?

The whole approach is wrong. I expect a good metal festival to offer me variation. Metalcore as well as the annoying Folk Metal wave are hopefully just a temporary fashion. And the Wacken staff currently put their main effort in these bands. You can see that in the demographic resonance of the festival. Wacken just five years ago was like visiting parts of your family. A sworn adept group of friends, all with the same concern. Wacken now has become quite the Metal-Kindergarten. Last year was especially hard on the soul, with quite a bunch of Hard-/Metalcore/Gotheburg/<insert random trendy-style here> bands attracting thousands of kids and teens. And these kids bring their own attitude into an otherwise very intimate audience.
And come on, Metalcore is nothing compared to the goold old styles. You don't even have to know about music to do it. It is like grunge with a second guitar and screaming instead of whining. And one of three simple song patterns matches any of these songs. For these kids, music is nothing to get deeply into anymore but just another cheap thrill in an already stimuly-flooded world.
And I don't have anything against kids or teens. Hell, when I started listening to metal, I was 14. But back then, we looked at the scene and got inspired by it's attitude. Today, if you're a kid, a concert isn't a good one unless you get drunk to a near comatose state and then beat youself and others up senselessly in what is called 'moshing' these days. And those are the same kids who go to see Opeth and boo the crap out of the atmosphere whenever they play a quite, emotional song or passage.
That's whats wrong. At least if you ask me.

Better then this year at least.

Good: Amon Amarth, Epica, Tristania, Korpiklaani, Napalm Death, Kampfar

Okay: In Flames, Hammerfall, Motörhead, Cathedral, Schandmaul, Gwar

Boring: Nevermore, Einherjer, In Extremo

crap: Machine Head, Walls Of Jericho

utter crap: Bullet for my Valentine

the rest I know, but haven't listend to. So overall not a bad line up for a fest who nowdays mostly functions as a meeting place for metalheads from all over the globe. they are improving, of course there is Bullet for my Valentine but ever wacken edition has an ultimate crap band. the rest is pretty good

So far only Nevermore and Tristania are of interest for me. I'll catch Epica and Volbeat at Summer Breeze and Einherjer at Ragnarök, so for me Wacken 2009 wouldn't be worth those 130 bucks.

Still wanting to see Tristania although Vibeke's gone? They are the one band I will always hate to have split up so soon. Parting with Morten Veland that is of course. Their Wacken '05 show was the only time I've ever seen them and Kjetil did a great job on Mortens vocals. But now that both are gone, and considering the less than average last album, I don't expect anything. Although I will see them. Østen just doesn't have what it takes to do deep growls.

I was always impressed by Tristania as a band which has lost a key figure quite early in its career, but managed to get a grip of themselves again, adopt an individual style which significantly deviates from the style that made them famous (I always used to say a new Tristania has risen from the "Ashes") and still release albums of high quality. Yes, that includes their latest output as well. And I'm curious to see how the new girl performs and whether the band will follow its recent path or go through another reorientation.

Interesting point of view. I've always loved their first two albums, thought World Of Glass was alright and have over the years grown to really like Ashes. But I don't listen to them together. Ashes has earned itself as special status for me. Illumination on the other hand is one of the greates disappointments in my CD rack. The loss of growls (deep or croaky) doesn't suit the band at all. Vibekes singing might make a grown man cry, but that's not enough for me to feel like Tristania. So I better keep my expectations low. What I've seen from Mariangela so far doesn't do anything for me. Kinda like Anette Olzon.

Machine Head, Axel Rudi Pell, Tristania... I'd bet five bucks that Within Temptation, Equilibrium or DragonForce are one of the next bands to be confirmed.

Numero uno.

I would love some good Death/Black or Thrash metal additions to the line-up. Hopefully they will announce some good bands. They promised to confirm a lot of great bands in December. Motörhead was one of them I guess.

I'm keeping my hopes up on Bloodbath. Opeth's tour should be over till then. And their new album more than justifies a few festival appearances.

Yeah, same here. I'm really hoping they will be confirmed too. The line-up would be an awful lot more interesting if Bloodbath would be there.

This is sick. Such a shitty lineup and sold out already. If you recall last Wacken, at this time of the year they already had Iron Maiden, Carcass, At The Gates, Avantasia, Kreator, Gorgoroth, Children Of Bodom, Nightwish, Kamelot, Obituary and many more confirmed. I wouldn't have minded BFMV, Walls of Jericho and Callejon if they had been confirmed at a later point, but this way all the "real" metalheads were waiting for something really interesting to be confirmed while all those who get attracted by them shitty bands and by the brand "Wacken" (i.e. kiddies and festival tourists) have successfully purchased their tic. Even if the lineup sucked, Wacken always had that special spirit of togetherness and an international flavor resulting in kind of a "united by metal" atmosphere. But somehow I have the feeling that this spirit of togetherness will be destroyed by an overly heterogeneous audience making Wacken nothing more than another Rock am Ring/Download Festival.

I just hope Slipknot and Trivium get confirmed as well, so I can laugh in the faces of every metalhead who's happy to still have gotten a tic...

This was to be expected. At any rate it's still their 20th anniversary. There were times I was thinking they held back good bands until they were sold out to reward their fans or such. We'll see. But you can't complain about being suddenly sold out. They kept us well-informed about ticket sales.
But in general i do agree. Last year's lineup was much more massive at this time a year.
