Further proof that France do own the world's finest black metal bands.
Spanning black metal and industrial/ambient, Vindsval has created an absolute monolithe in post bm. He began with the title 'Vlad' before changing the name after two demos and creating the much loved 'Ultima Thulee' which really put them on the map. As his career progressed he experimented with industrial and ambient and has carved the now highly stylised and distinctive Blut Aus Nord sound.
After I asked, I've acquainted myself with TWWTG, Odinist and MoRT. Didn't really grasp Odinist yet, but I really like the other two. I knew Sect(s) first, and it really didn't impress me too much. But holy shit, is this new album way better. One of the year's best metal albums for sure.

Ultima Thulee, Memoria Vetusta I and MV II are their greater work imo. TWWTG is just up there as one of the best, but the three I mentioned are definitely close.

In the name of forests; In the name of stars; In the name of all the seas; In the name of storms... Proud sons of ancient nation; Proud sons of sacred song in the wind; Proud sons behind a mirror of ice who told... Fathers of the icy age!!

Those three (and The Mystical Beast of Rebellion) are my least favourite by far ;] totally not worthy of being under the "Blut aus Nord" name.
I mean the band's name. Blut Aus Nord doesn't really do the music justice at all imo.
Yeah, with a name like that, I was expecting some serious blasturbation frostbitten shite. It is kind of odd that a French band would name themselves like that.
Not that odd, if you consider their first albums and early themes (Ultima Thulée anyone?). I think I remember some interview where Vindsval explained that he's from Normandy and therefore using Nordic themes makes sense for him.

Have to disagree with that. MV II maybe, but not MV I and Ultima Thulee. Those two albums are very underrated and are actually quite excellent. I wish BAN will go back to this style of theirs.
I got this tune stuck in my head for weeks. The riffs are so good :
And this one as well :

Slaughterday.... I think it's my favorite BaN song, the riffs
I don't care what direction they take, everything is good. I have kind of the same feeling with Darkthrone, forever awesome coz the incredible riffs are always there

And throw away that one sound that is truly their own and that haven't been done by other bands?
Hell no it's my answer If it were for me.. I would just keep seeing BAN releasing stuff like TWWTG and the 777 triology. I would allow them to make one regular BM album every now and then but their industrial take on BM will always have more importance to the scene and that can't be denied considering that most people and the scene in general woke up from their sleep after albums like TWWTG were blasting their ears.

I don't think it's possible as a musucian to go back to a sound you had five or ten years ago and write an album sounding that way. I that case you'll have to redo what many do nowadays, re-record one of your old albums, and that is soooo boring.
