Here we go, time to talk about one of the greatest bands in the metal scene. Feel free to express yourselves.

This thread has to be revived. It's too good to die.

One thing I don't understand is why people compare Kalmah and CoB to each other. They both have different styles and as most people have said - new Kalmah owns new Bodom.

About popularity... I'd say several people in Finland have heard the name Kalmah, but not many have actually heard any of the band's songs.

I haven't heard the newest album yet, but many people have been complaining about the extended use of low vocals. Since I prefer low vocals, I think I need to check this album out.

It's their best IMO. I like all of their material, but the newest one is the heaviest and most consistent.

The new album is not their best ... Swampsong is! I think it is a really sad and dark album, "Moon of My Nights" is also probably my favourite Kalmah song

Well after hearing the last album lots and lots of times i must say IMO its their second best, i still adore "They will Return", but i must say that the low voices mentioned above are fantastic now, and the music has reached another level, where of course keyboards arent so important ( we all miss you PASI), but the guitars are very powerful & deep so u can feel the "new" magic.

We will see how long this way will be, clearly they arent the same as in old times, but still playing METAL not like that .... that call itself now ETOS ... damn :puke:

Give it more tries its my recommendation

This must have been an important post for you, since you posted it 3 times

The thing about the new album that really stands out to me is the guitar. Some excellent riffs here, such as the main riff to the title track.

yeah the guitar sound is amazing, but it is the vocal change that hooked me in the begining. though someone did say this before, that old solos are way much better

Black waltz is differrent Ive always wanted to hear the vocals on a lower tier, some songs off black waltz are amazing but its not my favorite, they will return and swampsong are probably my vote.

But I must admit that the vocals are best on The Black Waltz, I like Kalmah with a little darker vocals. Gotta love the chorus Dancing/With me/Forever/The black waltz, that song and chorus got me into Kalmah and therefore it means hell of a lot to me!

I like The Black Waltz the best as well. But all of their albums are great. And as said, there is no comparison with CoB, I think Kalmah are better, because there is much more depth in the lyrics and you can actually understand what the vocalist is grunting. The music is great too, great drums and nice riffs.

Kalmah is overall a lot heavier than Children Of Bodom as well. They may not be as flashy but they have more power behind their music.

"Swampsong" is currently one of my very favorite albums, and "Heroes to Us" one of my favorite songs.

Great misture of technical death metal and great vocals.

My favorite song off the Black Waltz is man of the king, I guess Im an indecisive bastard. With the prior albums I wished they would stick to low growls and when Black waltz came out I wanted to high pitched vocals to come back. A mixture of both on the next album will be the best IMO.

Well I been listening to Kalmah for ages now, and I still think the debut album Swamplord and the follow up They Will Return are the best ones, but the 2 newer ones are very very good also. It's just like with Norther I prefer the first 2 albums, then the 2 newer ones.

All my favourite riffs/solos and songs are on the first 2 cd's also like Hades and The Blind Leader.

Wonder what the new one's gonna be like though when it comes out in May...?

are you sure it is a new album? because the band's website doesn't mention anything, and the only indicator for a new CD is the news posted a while back on spinefarm website

18.4.2007 2CD KALMAH Swamplord + They Will Return

9.5.2007 CD KALMAH tba

maybe it is a mistake?

@James: i guess the reason for re-releasing is that they are almost out of print. it was hardt to get swamplord, i had to use eBay, luckily it wasn't too expensive

Personally..This was their worst work of the 3..I really wasn't liking Pekka's voice all that greatly, at least compared to his his older growl. And what disappointed me the most was that the begin of the song "With Terminal Intensity" is the exact same begining as "Hero's To Us"...It's still pleasent to listen to with songs like "The Groan of the Wind", "Mindrust", Time Takes Us All", and "Bitter Metallic Side"..
Still nothing beats older Kalmah, with songs's Withering Away, Hades, Alteration, Heritance of Berija, Swamphell, Hallow Heart, Burbot's Revenge, Man of Mystery, basically all of them..Xb
I love Kalmah and have for quite some time now..I was hoping to hear better..but at least "Black Waltz" is better than Children of Bodom's "Are you Dead yet?"

Yeah same here....when u live in South Africa u have a very small and limited range of metal cd's in the shops and they all cost around US$35 so I have to Import like basically everything Im interested in. So I ordered a Kalmah shirt and "The Black Waltz" and ended up being broke for like a month haha

Yeah like Ive said in the past...I dont feel this is their best album, in fact I realised I get bored quite quickly when i listen to TBW, compared to SL and SS which still totally slays with every listen. Its also strange how despite their earlier efforts it ironically became their latest album bringing them the most acclaim. Funny how that works lol...at least people now have a better idea of who they are and they can get more recognition for their amazing previous albums.

Over here, the great bands, namely Kalmah, and their albums are not found. Well at least to me, I've been searching HIgh and Low for their cds. And after my desperate attempts I've found them now ^_^ I just love Pekka's unearthly growls! Don't you agree?.

Still it's sad in knowing that I'd never ever get to see them live, since this city doesnt know good music! Fuckers!
