I hate how people condemn Kalmah as bodom clones, first they don't have an ego trippin vocalist with bad screams, second they don't have childish lyrics and finaly Kalmah play Melodic Death mixed with power, while Bodom play power with extreme vocals with here and there thrash touches. they also don't have the typical flashy handsome finnish looks like Alexi and Petri have, not that pekka is ugly. now Norther just have degraded them self to bodom clones in the last years. looking forward to the new album of these swamplords!

Children of Bodom is IMO a overrated band.... [Someone is gonna hit me jajajajja]

Children of Bodom gets tired quickly. I listened to them for a while but never really got into their stuff. They are without a doubt overrated - although I can see why they're popular. Some people like the angry, "in your face" sound and CoB delivers on that front. I'd say Kalmah's sound is much more refined and sophisticated. Their songs have a different feel, and appeal to a different audience. Although - if you're not paying attention - it's easy to assume that both bands play the "same" type of music because of the keyboards!

If there are any CoB fans sitting out there and thinking that CoB and Kalmah are both extreme power metal and should be lumped together (and that Kalmah is the de facto ripoff of the two), think again. Is Opeth a Cannibal Corpse ripoff? Did Akerfeldt "steal" the death metal voice from Corpsegrinder two years after CC started up? Of course not! So enough with the ridiculous notion that Kalmah is a copy of CoB. It's a load of bunk.

Oh dear, I was looking forward to For The Revolution coming out on Feb. 2nd 2008, because I read the release date as 2.4.2008, which is in Day/Month/Year notation instead of what I am used to; Month/Day/Year.

Sigh, I suppose I'll have to wait another two months or so.

On an unrelated note, I agree completely with you, Harmonic. I always respected Children of Bodom's older work for their talent and the adrenaline pumping keyboard/guitar solo battles in some of the songs(like Kissing the Shadows), but one thing that bothered me was the extreme angst attitude that came from some of the song atmospheres and the vocals. I prefer Kalmah much more just because that attitude isn't there, and the melodies and vocals are much more refined and elegant. That's right, metal can be elegant : )

Just me who would appreciate maybe just a slight change in their sound? I don't think they've evolved that much. Don't get me wrong though, still one of my favourite bands.

I agree... The Black Waltz is not as good as the first three albums...
And I don't really like the new vocals.
The old styles of vocals was the thing that make me a Kalmah-fan

I suspect the Norther will be on par with the Bodom, even though i was expecting a bit more from "N".
Still, i think Kalmah will emerge victorious!

Nooo, what are you on my friend? Sure, The Black Waltz is different compared to their earlier releases, but still on par with any of them, my opinion of course.
In fact, i'll even go as far as saying that it's better than "Swampsong", "Swamplord" being their best of course.

Plus, they changed, but not drastically, like Norther and Bodom, now they sound American, with just prominent rhythm guitars and excellent production values.
The Black Waltz was still very much extreme power metal, with mellodic lead guitar licks playng over heavy rhythm guitar riffs.

You can expect the new album to be in the same manner, which is why they'll never make as much money as Norther or CoB, but will certainly continue to put out consistent albums, which is the least i can say for their counterparts.

Interesting point about them sounding "American" - that could be why I don't like "The Black Waltz" as much as their previous work. I think it's good that they changed their sound - it's very important for bands to keep it fresh. And I guess the new sound isn't bad - it just doesn't appeal to me.

nice to see that a lot people think that Bodom is just a lame "in your face!" band and even on that part it fails, the music sounds everything but tough.
Kalmah are defently Melodic Death, it is really clear on The Black Waltz.
