Within Temptation, Amaranthe - Gothic Theatre, Englewood, CO USA - 28 Sept 2014 by D.T. Metal (46)

Within Temptation and Amaranthe, who just finished their North America Tour, made a stop in Colorado as well and since yours truly was in attendance, below are some of the highlights of the show.

What a week. This was my third time driving up to Denver for a show. Just in case anybody is keeping tabs: musically, I went from Arsis to Crowbar and ended the week's shenanigans with Within Temptation. But it was so worth it.

Now, I have seen the Gothic Theatre sold out before and the club manager told me earlier in the week that the show is almost sold out. But nothing could have prepared me for what went on that Sunday night in Englewood, CO. Arriving rather late and since it was about 30 minutes before doors, it took me quite a while to find parking. The line to enter the venue was ridiculous; seriously. And while I thought I cut it too close for comfort, Amaranthe took the cake on this one. Their bus arrived about 10 minutes before I did; which translated into a mad dash for their crew to set up the merchandise, and more importantly, to set up the band's gear on the stage. Thankfully, by the time the doors opened at 7pm, all was ready for the masses.

Masses, wow! There I was, in the waaay back of the room, standing at the bar and wondering why on earth so many people were just standing around. And then I realized that it was the line to buy merchandise. I have NEVER seen a line snake all the way around the merch stand, into the venue and three-quarters around the bar. To be honest, I don't even know if those people saw the beginning of Amaranthe's set, which started promptly at 8pm. Crazy I tell you.

Amaranthe up close and personal
To a sea of red lights and strobes, one by one the band stepped onto the stage, with the lovely Elize Ryd being the last of the bunch. Amaranthe started their set with "Digital World", a song off their just released album, Massive Addictive and the song wasn't even all the way done before the first 'We Love You' shouts came from the audience. People went nuts; I swear, I even saw some cry during "Invincible".

I normally attend heavier shows and it was a nice change of pace to listen to and also watch Amaranthe on stage. I haven't seen them live before and didn't know what to expect in regards to their concept of three vocalists. I am pleased to say - I dig it. It works really well for the band and no one vocal part overshadows the others. Of course, the main emphasis IS the female vocals and Elize did an outstanding job that night.

Since Within Temptation's keyboards and drum set was already on the stage, Amaranthe had to set up their gear in front of it, meaning the band was right up in the fans' faces. I don't even know how many times every band member (sans the drummer of course) shook hands with the folks in the front row or how many time Elize blew kisses to the fans on the upper decks. And of course the fans reacted with loud cheers, clapping and jumping around.

Sometimes the local audience is weird when it comes to mosh-pits (I have seen one during Helloween) but thankfully none of this happened that night. Amaranthe's music doesn't require this and to be honest, there was no way one could have started anyways. Sardines in a can probably have more room than the fans did that night. The Gothic Theatre was packed to the gills.

Being the only support band for Within Temptation on this tour, one would assume that Amaranthe would play a longer set; unfortunately this was not the case. Their show was over way too quick and after "Drop Dead Cynical" the band thanked the fans for their support and promised to be back, before playing "The Nexus" as the final encore.

Set list:
Digital World, Hunger, Invincible, 1.000.000 Lightyears, Massive Addictive, Afterlife, Amaranthine, Call Out My Name, Drop Dead Cynical
Encore: The Nexus

While the stage was being prepared for the headliner, I was standing outside to cool down a bit. With 1000 plus folks in attendance, you can imagine how hot it was in the venue. I noticed right away that the smoking area was almost empty. Rather surprising, but on the other hand not totally unexpected, since nobody wanted to give up their spot to watch the bands that night.

Within Temptation
I made it back inside and the room went pitch black. Within Temptation had a digital backdrop and some sort of movie started playing. Once the drummer and keyboardist took their spots, my eardrums almost did burst. You would have thought it was a Justin Bieber concert since the females (and probably some males) in the room started screaming like maniacs. The rest of the band members followed and vocalist Sharon came onto the stage right as the singing part of "Paradise (What About Us?)" started. What an entrance and the fans went nuts. More so when the band played "Faster" since all of the people in the front row thrust their fists forward and I had to dodge to not get hit in the head while trying to take pictures.

Since I am not familiar with all of the band's videos I don't know if what ran on the digital backdrop was actually the video to the particular song. But right before they played "Fire And Ice", an angel with wings was seen and I heard someone in the audience scream: "Free Bird".

Sharon sounded phenomenal that night and she did a hell of a job when they played "Sinéad" as an acoustic version, with only one acoustic guitar, during the encore. The band ended the evening with "Ice Queen" and Sharon had the audience going with screaming the violin (or keyboard?) parts. This was pretty funny actually. Within Temptation were on fire that night and everybody, band as well as fans, had the time of their lives.

Set list:
Paradise (What About Us?), Faster, Let Us Burn, In The Middle Of The Night, Fire And Ice, Our Solemn Hour, Stand My Ground, Summertime Sadness, The Cross, And We Run, Intro followed by See Who I Am, Dangerous, Angels, Edge Of The World, What Have You Done, Mother Earth
Encore: Covered By Roses, Sinéad, Ice Queen

Awesome! Now I can pretend I was there Thanks for the review!!!

I went to see this show in SF. It was at the Regency Ballroom; a lovely, huge theatre. Last time I was at the Ballroom was to see Summer Slaughter 2013 and it was 2/3 full, if that. I thought... No way WT will fill half that venue. I kind of felt sorry for them, the thought of playing to half a theatre. We walk up to the entrance for the show and it's SOLD OUT! WTF?!! I had no idea WT was that famous here. Damn my own assumptions but good for them!!

Same here. I had no clue they were that popular. But I can see why. The show was awesome.

Weird how this sometimes works. I see that with US bands also. They have huge success overseas but not so much at home.

Within Temptation are pretty big here in UK, considering they played Wembley Arena and are headlining Bloodstock Festival 2015!
