Morost's brand of death metal is quite groovy, with strong drumming and blast beats in all the right places, while a thundering bass leads us through the darkness. Yet, there is so much beauty and emotion in Solace In Solitude. These Slovenians carry the label "Progressive Death Metal" and I can get right in line behind that. It's decidedly extreme metal, but the shards of melody that slice their way into this music will equally slice their way into your tortured, music-loving heart.

The guitars mesmerize and the keyboards balance out the vocal onslaught, both acting as beacon of lights, particularly in "Thorp Afield." Vocals are extraordinarily well performed by Jonas Sav?ek, also of the black metal band Ivje. Along with his gruff style, his diction is excellent and the lyrics are quite audible. The lyrical theme is primarily social commentary, opening with the observational text of "Human Debris." The fury of the words seems to stir song after song and reach a fever pitch before collapsing into the menacingly contrite, penultimate piece entitled "Regrets."

The loathsome lot of them, plainly mad, how else would you explain them gripping hope that way
-from "Thorp Afield"

I regret my hurt inflicting words
Wounds, now scars

-from "Regrets"

I regret the times I stayed behind
When all things of worth deemed worthy and true
By that heightened, sharpened state of mind
Thus I sat and thought and missed my cue

-from "Regrets"

Along with the excellent production and extraordinarily well-balanced songwriting, further demonstrations of the care that was put into this album are the simple, keyboard-driven opening and closing tracks: atmospheric interludes that mirror each other. I am an absolute sucker for albums that begin and end with the same music theme or passage and in this case it really provides a bookend to the story we've been told with Solace In Solitude.

Stream and purchase this incredibly excellently crafted debut at Bandcamp.
