Facínora - Born In Fear [Demo]
2008

01. Empty Illusions
02. War Between Selfish
03. Despair
04. The Evil

According to the Translation Portuguese - English Collins Dictionary, Facínora (m., noun) means criminal. But according to the Metal Storm dictionary at hand, Facínora means criminally solid thrash metal as it should be. And frankly that's about all you need to know.

Hailing from Bello-Horizonte, Brazil this young band really has some punch to offer on their four-song debut demo release. And that punch, ladies and gentlemen, is nothing more or nothing less than opulent old-school inspired powerful thrash metal. In fact, Facínora is pretty much a band after my heart; a band without scruples that immediately gets to the point and just does what they need to do without screwing the whole thing up.
The band is really keeping up the pace throughout the whole record, even throwing in some amusing solos and a few unexpected tempo changes. Shouted vocals are clean yet harsh, and just like the rest of the music filled with force and stamina. And eventhough this polished demo clocks in at a feeble eighteen minutes, Facínora still kept me hooked the whole jaunt long. Wrapped up, a convincing yet slightly rudimental demo like this is really something. And if you don't believe me, at least believe the year recap on the ThrashUnlimited forum, where "Born In Fear" was listed second (out of twenty-four) in the best demo/EP of 2008 charts.

My only remark is Facínora are playing it a tad too safe. "Born In Fear" isn't exactly highly original or mind-shattering, though the songs still sound appealing and aggressive enough to be played several times in a row. On the other hand for some this could hardly be called a remark at all, as I'm sure the people who read this review until this point can all agree there's simply nothing wrong with quality old-school thrash metal - though a little distinctive freshness is never a superfluous luxury either. To say it blunt, I'm pretty sure this demo could please several thrash metalheads.
Ow yeah, and the main guitar line of the opening of the song "Despair" reminds me a bit too much of "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)", but that's only a minor and all in all forgivable detail.

When all is said and done, the people who wholeheartedly believe thrash metal is as dead as it gets are the real criminals around here.

I find that any bands who try to give some freshness to the old school thrash sound can't help but have some sort of Metallica sound to them. It's pretty much unavoidable and you can be damn sure that 80's Metallica are always on a thrashheads mind

5mins later:

I just checked out their myspace. You explained them to a T. This is great stuff. I am usually fussy with Thrash too. I find that too many bands sound like cc's. Thanks!

I listened to the first 2 tracks on their myspace site. This is certainly well made and, as you say, packs a real punch. For a self-released demo, particularly, this is well done and catchy. Thanks for bringing the band to our attention, Thryce, they seem promising.

I'm impressed - and surprised that I am. Good to see someone is keeping the thrash dream alive. Will be sure to keep an eye on these guys. Thanks!

Damn you're clever with words

I enjoyed the myspace tracks. Like you said, very solid. What is it with Brazil and bands who come out to kick a classic genre square in the balls? First Hibria, now this! Sweet.
