Quite a polarizing year, this one. On one hand, some releases redefined crap itself. On the other hand, we've got quite a few great and awesome albums. All in all, it was a bit disappointing for me, but I won't complain much indeed (unless I compare it with 2007 of course)...
1 to 5: Cream of the crop, by preference order.
6 to 30: great stuff, too, in alphabetical order. Couldn't go down to 25, so 28 we have...
1.
Lazuli - (4603 Battements) Dark, sad but so appealing and original prog with some fantastic lyrics... |
2.
Thy Catafalque - Rengeteg Beautiful, soulful avantgarde stuff. Then you listen to it again, and discover whole new layers of awesomeness. |
3.
Devin Townsend - Deconstruction Redefing 'over-the-top'. |
4.
Terra Tenebrosa - The Tunnels That one will teach you claustrophobia for sure. |
5.
Unexpect - Fables Of The Sleepless Empire A crazy, relentless assault that'll kick you off your chair by cheer inventivity. |
6.
Ava Inferi - Onyx A really dark mood, beckoing you to come closer with eerie and exceptional female vocals... |
7.
Benighted - Asylum Cave A blast live, a blast on CD. What's more to ask? |
8.
Blut Aus Nord - 777 - Sect(s) Industrial Black with their unique sound, oppressive yet... somewhat cosy. |
9.
Blut Aus Nord - 777 - The Desanctification Industrial Black with their unique sound, oppressive yet... somewhat cosy. Part II |
10.
Esoteric - Paragon Of Dissonance This is not a Maniacal Vale II. It's different (guitar solos !!!) yet unmistakably Esoteric. |
11.
Fair To Midland - Arrows & Anchors Darkly whimsical prog, and so uplifting it should be prescribed against depression. |
12.
Fleshgod Apocalypse - Agony This time, they successed to mix classical music and brutal death. To great effect! |
13.
Flourishing - The Sum Of All Fossils Forget Ulcerate, this is the real shit. And it gets better with every listen. |
14.
Iperyt - No State Of Grace They hate people, and it shows. |
15.
Kartikeya - Mahayuga Catchy death with some melodies and clean singing. But the best is the Indian spice. |
16.
KMFDM - WTF?! Back in shape, they are! Catchy, ironic, danceable (or not), that's KMFDM for you. |
17.
Leprous - Bilateral A nice proggy surprise. And they kick major ass live. |
18.
Myrath - Tales Of The Sands Oriental power/prog from Tunisia. Talented. |
19.
N.K.V.D. - Vlast Another industrial black album. Yup. Totalitarian oppression never sounded so good. |
20.
Pagan's Mind - Heavenly Ecstasy What? Power metal that is at the same time not chessy and uplifting? Impressive. |
21.
Rhapsody Of Fire - From Chaos To Eternity Now there's cheese. But I always had a soft spot for these Italians. Plus, this is easily their most varied album ever. |
22.
Septicflesh - The Great Mass These guys outdo themselves each time. |
23.
Smohalla - Resilience Weird, weird, weird. Starting on BM roots, it then expands... elsewhere. |

25.
Textures - Dualism Another textured goodness, more melodic than usual this time. |
26.
The Project Hate MCMXCIX - Bleeding The New Apocalypse (Cum Victriciis In Manibus Armis) I still have difficulties with Ruby's voice, but damn those riffs! |
27.
Vildhjarta - Måsstaden Djent, as they call it. OK, but of the best variety. Unpredictable. |
28.
Xerath - II Djent, as they call it. OK, but of the best variety. Quite symphonic, with a cinematic feel. |
