This list is meant to be an extensive, but by no means exhaustive, collection of the greatest (modern) metal albums and eps. Running the gamut from avant-garde to trve norweigan black metal. *As someone who is young in age, my tastes tend to revolve around the period of the 80s to the present.* Although certain metal albums from before will certainly be featured, the period of the 60s-70s will be under-represented. I joined Metal Storm in late 2010 and throughout the years I have discovered so many incredible bands and albums thanks to this site.

My taste in music has changed considerably during this decade so putting together this list was not an easy task. This is the result but I will continuously update it as I revisit albums and discover new ones.

Still not finished, as I need to rearrange, check the links and also go through the genres again. I might have forgotten many good records. In addition, my knowledge of early industrial movement is very limited, so the list is lacking on that front. Many albums on the list might also not be considered drone in a traditional sense of the word, but they need the same sort of aesthetic appreciation I guess, so I included them. The most important criteria is that the albums should rely extensively on texturing, buildup, and musical landscapes rather that being riff based.

As anyone who knows me well enough by now should know, I'm a sucker for drone, ambient, and psychedelic music, and anything and everything in between. I've come to really enjoy and appreciate that hypnotizing, trance inducing stuff that is all about plunging the listener deep into a semiconscious state of awareness through repetition, minimalist composition, and/or formless atmospheres that explore the very nature of music itself. This list is basically for me to keep track of such albums released this year, and to potentially turn you onto some of them as well. Includes a few nonmetal albums. And not entirely limited to drone/ambient and psychedelia either, as I sometimes find awesome, trance-inducing albums outside of these genres as well. Albums in order by release date. This is a list of the doom albums I have listened to.

The list starts with a handful of what I'd call my favorite doom albums. The first few of those count among my favorite of all time, with Paranoid, Watching From A Distance, and Черно at present holding a perfect 10. This list does have a cutoff point, stretching from those 10s through some high 9s and all the way down to middling 6s. If I rated it below a 6, it does not appear on this list, and that's because I disliked the album.

Given how much music I listen to and how many lists I have going concurrently, I don't update this as I go; I let albums accumulate for a while and then do periodic overhauls, so the list won't change for months at a time.
