"One day I will go to him
Strong enough to fight and win
The kind of a man
That he'll understand
Aaaaaaaa
*the heaviest organ solo of the 70s*
"
David Byron didn't have Ian Gillan's vocal chops, but damned if he does not give it his all here. Mick Box's guitar does have plenty of great moments here, but I'd be lying if I said that Ken Hensley didn't absolutely steal the show with his organ. While not entirely "'eavy", there's no denying that this album, released 50 years ago today, and starting Uriah Heep's career, deserves its place as an early metal classic, even if just for the opener alone.

The singer stealed Ian Gillan's voice?

In many ways an exceptional album. Starts strong with two rock songs, then ballad, then bluesy, then again rock... Great songs, great vocals. Classic 70s.

Yes maybe a little, V'EV'U is still underrated. Walking In Your Shadow is better song than anything on Salisbury IMO.

Great great debut. Love the cover art and the title. The progressive Wake Up is probably my favourite but the two heavy opening tracks are iconic as well.

Both of them seek to obtain power over you - To rule your mind, control your property interests or labor power.

Agreed, "I'll Keep On Trying" and especially "Gypsy" are classics, but I think the whole album is great

Removing "Bird of Prey" was a crime! Anyway, it's a Hard Rock classic! Not a masterpiece - but definitely worth checking out. The best songs for me here: "Walking in Your Shadow", "Gypsy", "Dreammare" and "I'll Keep On Trying".

Brilliant album, way more mature and refined hard rock than what I expected from such an early record. Uriah Heep knew exactly what they were doing from the very beginning.
