Here's something not many bands can pull off; 6 albums, none of which suck. While there's not too much re-imagining going on here, it definitely seems like High On Fire have found a nice little crossroads of all their best aspects. In fact, De Vermis Mysteriis makes a lot of their previous recordings almost sound like beta testing.

Nothing fancy here. The band that put the POWAH! in power trio, High On Fire, are back with another pummeling album featuring dalekian vocals, pounding drums, pummeling guitar and bass riffs, and Matt Pike's frenetic solos. Tracks like "Spiritual Rites" and "Serums Of Liao" are the sonic equivalent of a bar room brawl. Enjoy.

Fertile Green doesn't sound really all that good. The main riff (when audible) feels extremely recycled from "Waste Of Tiamat". I'm not so much into this mixing where everything is cranked, leaving no room for any of the subtleties they threw into their previous albums. Some people like that, not so much myself.

The more that is revealed about this album, the less optimistic I become.

The mix and mastering are what bother me about it. Compressing the hell out of it makes it blast like a motherfucker, but this isn't black metal. It needs to breathe a little.

Since Luminiferous is coming, I've been listening to De Vermis more and I find it a little more favorable than before, but not much. If it had the post-production of any of the other albums in the last decade, it wouldn't fatigue me when listening to it.

The solo in King Of Days is pure awesomeness.

Agree. "KIng of Days" is a beast.

Yep, it is brutally good.
