When drummer/vocalist Proscriptor (Russ R. Givens) dissolved Absu on January 27th 2020 (more about this here), his main intention was to splinter the 30-year old faction into a renewed songwriting concord. Proscriptor McGovern's Apsû is the new band emerging and will also feature continuing bassist/vocalist Ezezu and new guitarist Vaggreaz. The debut/self-titled album will be released via Agonia Records on a date that is to be announced in late 2020.

Candlelight Records has confirmed October 4th as the North American release date for Absu's new album, titled Abzu.
The album is part two of a planned trilogy of recordings from the Dallas-based mythological occult metal band. Mixed by J.T. Longoria (King Diamond, Solitude Aeturnus), the album features the original works of Polish artist Zbigniew Bielak (Watain, Behemoth, Deströyer 666, Vader).
Recorded at Nomad Recording Studios in Carrollton, Texas, Abzu finds drummer/vocalist Proscriptor and bassist/vocalist Ezezu sharing equal vocal duties and debuts the skills of new guitarist Vis Crom. Proscriptor comments: "Abzu is the first studio release to feature a co-vocalist alongside myself since our third album, The Third Storm of Cythraul. Ezezu's vocal presentation is beyond superlative and I am overly pleased with his execution and delivery. The songwriting undertakings were equally distributed between both Ezezu and Vis Crom and I must admit it brings an admirable multiplicity to the album as a whole. The last song on the album, "A Song For Ea," was composed in six movements, as it brought the entire band together as an equivalent songwriting team. Vis Crom has definitely proven to be Absu's most proficient guitarist in the history of the band."
Writing began on Abzu last autumn as Proscriptor notes: "This album has not only been the most challenging in Absu's discography, but the quickest paced - composition and arrangement wise. The current line-up is scattered all across the United States, so the album was physically written utilizing internet file sharing. We even rehearsed, at times, while communicating via cell phones. Lyrically, the album descends deeper into Enki's lower world as well Thelemic and Enochian Magic(k) Systems. My lyrical architecture is extremely convoluted, so I decided to create a generalized synopsis explaining the themes behind each song. I feel these are my best poems since 2001's Tara."
Abzu has benefited from the unity of the band despite limited face-to-face rehearsal time. In fact only two proper rehearsals were had; one preparing for the band's dates with Immortal earlier this year. The six-date showcase tour was the first live American dates for the band since their headline tour in June of 2009. Proscriptor confirms: "We rehearsed one week prior to the tour supporting Immortal and exactly one week after in preparation for the studio experience. I can honestly say this is the first time Absu has rehearsed for only one week, as an entire unit, before entering the studio."

Candlelight Records announces its third label packaged tour for North America. Set to kick off on June 6, CIII will feature the talents of US black metal legends Absu, with support coming from France's Glorior Belli, Austin-based Averse Sefira and Los Angeles-based Sothis. The tour will visit 22 cities throughout the US and Canada beginning in San Marco, California and wrapping up in Dallas, Texas on June 29. Tickets for all shows go on sale exclusively at Enterthevault.com for now. Tickets will go on sale through all local and online ticket agencies starting March 5.
Absu's self-titled new album hits stores nationwide February 24. Currently featured on the cover of Metal Maniacs the album is the first to offer new material from the highly regarded metal band in nearly eight years. The Texas-based band, self-described as "mythological occult metal," are a fan favorite the world over. Terrorizer Magazine calls the new album "a sound incarnate of a band making the underground amazing again - an undeniable masterpiece." This will be the band's first large-scale tour since their tour alongside Enslaved in 1997.
France's Glorior Belli make their first trip to North America as they participate on CIII. Their sophomore record, "Manifesting The Raging Beast", was released in 2007 via Southern Lord Records. The band now, signed to Candlelight, will begin recording of their label debut, titled "Meet Us At The Southern Sign", this month with hopes to see it released during the tour. Popular site Metal Kult said in review, "Manifesting is as darkly beautiful as it is gloom inducing."
Averse Sefira join CIII continuing to support their latest album, "Advent Parallax". Time Out New York notes, "black-metal lifers Averse Sefira have become a road-hardened unit, and it shows in the blistering grooves of "Advent Parallax". The fourth album of the band's 12-year career has no gothic frills or weedy "kvlt" production, just eight battle-ready blasts jammed with parched-throat howls, scything guitar riffs, blistering drums and hooks that stick." Their participation on the tour is their third national tour in two years having previously toured with labelmates 1349 in 2007 and with friends Immolation in early 2008.
Sothis released their Andy LaRocque (King Diamond) debut, "De Oppresso Liber", on September 2. The record has enjoyed growing and consistent sales since release. This will be the band's first national tour. Canada's popular Brave Words Bloody Knuckles magazine says, "behold the next big black metal band." The band is currently completing work on their first video from "De Oppresso Liber" for the album's title track.

Official press release
Texas-based mythological occult metal band Absu have posted the song "Girra's Temple" from their self-titled new album due in stores February 24 on their official MySpace page. The song offers fans the first listen to material on the anxiously awaited new album that features an all-star array of guest musicians.
"Absu" is the first new recording from the trio since their highly acclaimed album "Tara" released in 2001. Produced by the band with mixing assistance from J.T. Longoria (King Diamond, Solitude Aeturnus), the album features artwork from Belgian artist Kris Verwimp. Drummer/vocalist Proscriptor says of the album's lyrical concepts, "I am concentrating more on Sumerian-based occult themes of magick and mythology versus the Celtic aspect of my previous writings, which was heavily expressed on the last few Absu studio albums. Musically speaking, the material will be quite similar to Tara, but with more of a '70s progressive/psychedelic texture within it."
Absu came to international prominence with the release of their debut, "Barathrum: VITRIOL", in 1992. Originally released via Gothic Records, the label later licensed the record to France's Osmose Productions (Immortal, Enslaved, Marduk). Absu would establish a solid relationship with the label and thus release all later recordings via the renowned independent, including the highly regarded "Tara" (2001). In 2007, the band would announce a new partnership with London-based Candlelight Records.

01. Between The Absu Of Eridu & Erech
02. Night Fire Canonization
