As a non-American, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Texas is some sort of Arctic tundra given it is the same state that bore Stone Cold Steve Austin and Frozen Soul, whose latest album is called No Place Of Warmth. Most of my knowledge of Texas is cowboys, George Bush and Sandy Cheeks, but it turns out it can actually get pretty cold there; maybe not No Place Of Warmth, but it's certainly worth investing in a pair of gloves if you're going there in winter.

Well, what I lack in knowledge about Texas, I make up for in knowledge of death metal, and today's subject is Frozen Soul. Three albums in and going from strength to strength, these Texans have earned themselves a reputation that highlights that they are not some short-lived, overnight sensation that their near-instant success may have led some to believe. As No Place Of Warmth highlights, the band has some quality that has yet to melt under the spotlight (don't be cold-hearted; that pun broke the ice, and you know it).

Producing death metal in the icy vein of Bolt Thrower, Frozen Soul may not melt the most skeptical of minds, but what they lack in originality they make up for in cold, calculating quality that has produced several quality albums worth of material. No Place Of Warmth is a solid album, one that will entertain any who chip away at it, though one that is their weakest to date; not a bad album by any means, but not hitting the highs (or, should that be freezing depths?) of their prior albums.

As the lumbering juggernauts of "Frost Forged", "Dreadnought", and "Invoke War" show, No Place Of Warmth has some stone-cold classics beneath the permafrost. Indeed, as cheesily titled as "Killin Time (Until It's Time To Kill)" is, there is plenty to like, and you'd be hard-pressed not to find something to enjoy here. With a solid, and well-balanced production, the band sounds like a solid ball of ice ready to smash through and shatter any scepticism you may have had.

The primary shortcoming on No Place Of Warmth is in the rather wasted use of guest appearances. To quote nikarg in his review of Crypt Of Ice "A bunch of Texans playing ice-cold death metal. It's not like we haven't seen weirder things happen". Well, on the title track we get that weirder thing in the shape of a member of My Chemical Romance on a death metal album, something that you would think would provide a memorable moment; alas, beyond the shock value, Gerard Way's appearance is otherwise squandered. The fact that this then occurs on the following "Invoke War" (with Robb Flynn instead) as well, basically copying Way in just having a short passage at the end of the album, suggests the band threw them on for the sake of it, rather than having an actual plan of how to utilise their guests.

No Place Of Warmth is a solid album, and well worth listening to for fans of death metal. While Frozen Soul fans may see it is a small step down from what the band has done before, it is by any other measure a solid and enjoyable album that will warm the soul of anyone who listens to it. A chilling tale, that's for sure.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I'm not listening.

I don't agree completely. This album not only is the best their work, moreover it's best DM album of this year at least. Killer sound, catchy riffs, perfecr DM vocal with great phrasing and style. Songwriting is not 6 here obviously and production more than 8.

I think this is my favorite Frozen Soul release. The songwriting is a lot more consistent. Their sophomore album was good but felt a little cookie cutter. No Place For Warmth is varied and has an edge the last album didn't.
