I saw the movie yesterday and I couldn't sleep that night! (ok... just because we spend the rest of the night watching the exorcist) Now seriously, I really like this movie. I have play the game but never finish it because I'm kind of nervous and I don't like noises and every time one of those thing appear I almost die just because of that noise (sound like a schizophrenic?). The same happen to me when I was watching the movie... about the end, for me is just THE perfect end... and well I love all the graphics and that kind of stuffs

I really liked the movie, it was a lot better from other movies inspired by video-games. The atmosphere it creates is amazing and the graphics are just...awesome. It's a very good transfer from the game, which I haven't finished either, because of a computer crash near to the end of the game!
Pyramid head is the best character in the movie, hehe
It wasn't that scary, but very well-made, even though the acting needed more attention on some parts
In general, very good film, better than the 2/3 of the Hollywood crap that comes out every once and a while

I have finished all the games and the Silent Hill games is some of my fav games of all time togheter with several Final Fantasy titles and Legend of Zelda titles. I found this movie VERY "kind" for being tagged with Silent Hill. The creatures of silent hill was really unhorrifying compared to the games. I must say that I actually did enjoy this movie the most of all game movies to date, but the way the story was told in the movie was just to slow. I mean that old hag in the church shouldnt have to tell everyone exactly what has happened during the movie just to sum it up for the slow. Also I found all parts involving the father rather useless since he found out very few facts contra the time he got. It would just be easier if the mother found some notes on her way in silent hill. That way the tension built up wouldnt go to waste and it could be more focus on the horror.

And the dialogue in the movie was horrible at times, really really bothersome but well, lets just overlook that!

It was still a movie good enough to see. And since I am a Silent Hill fan I it is impossible to dislike the movie when the way-to-awsome Pyramid Head is in the movie!

/cheers!

Hmm.

I really didn't like this movie. It was too long. It dragged. It was predictable. It was cliched. Oh, man, was it cliched. There is not one element in that movie that I hadn't seen in some other movie.

I'm not sure what the point of a lot of the scenes were, they were just sort of stuck in there, I'm assuming to stay true to the game, and the whole character of the father/husband who just sort of appears now and then in search of his wife and daughter was (as I suspected and later read) totally padded into the script because there were no male characters in the story.

This was one of those movies I walked out of wondering who allowed it to be made. It really should have just been left well enough alone as a game.

Every word spoken is a perfect truth my dear. The film was -to judge by our laughing whenst it was shown- a great steaming heep of mule manure. 2nd only to the mighty reek that was Ultraviolet.

How true to the game/s is it?
I haven't seen it yet but i hope that it is atleast worthy enough of a video game movie.

The movie is a near perfect implementation of the Silent Hill universe. Sure, they had to change some historical facts (i'm talking about the Silent Hill history) to make it slightly more understandable for people new to the story. And for a video game movie, it's the best one that i've seen or heard about. Plus it ranks very high as a movie in it's own also.
Saw it in the cinema! Yes, i actually PAID for a god damn movie ticket so that i could see it. Lovely front row experience, great imagery and good make-up (on the monsters i mean). The end where the...oh wait, i won't spoil that moment. Just know that in the end, you'll see something marvellous (imo). And i don't care if it was predictable or not, cos that's not what i concentrate on, when i'm watching movies or playing games. I just try to...think of myself as the person in the movie/game to make the feeling greater.
The music was awesome. Slightly remixed tracks from the games, but finely done. Felt refreshing when i heard a different part.
But well, some places did seem either out of place or totally wrong. That annoyed me a little, plus Cybil's way of speech "Rose, look at this" "What the fuck is that?!" "What the fuck is going on?!" Just repeated those lines too often and the way she said em...NOT good. The word "fuck" shouldn't be used in that type of movies, because it totally removes a part of the atmosphere...plus it makes me laugh, cos i keep thinking of black people in comedies whenever i hear the lines "What the fuck is that" or "What the fuck is going on"

I wouldn't give the movie a 10/10, but a very very solid 8/10. And you should definately see it. This is nowhere close to Resident Evil movies, which were just plain...weird.

EDIT: and all that explaining was there also to let people into the universe with less trouble. Seriously, without all the explaining, how would new people know why the place is how it was? Plus there were more movies planned i think. At least one more, possibly even two or 3. And i have high hopes for them, because now the explaining is done and people understand Silent Hill (the ones that have only seen the movie)

I thought it was the best horror movie Ive ever seen. Having said that...every other horror movie Ive seen, Ive hated...so this is the first horror movie I truly enjoyed. As a movie itself, regardless of genre, I thought it was great. I liked the story, the graphics were great, it was scary (to a certain degree)...the monsters (Pyramid Head! and the others too) very just awesome. Id see it again.

The game is not the same and this movie doesnt do any justice at all to the games. The only thing that saved this movie from being utter shit was Pyramid Head wich is just to cool. ^^

What did you expect ? More action à la Resident Evil with a pretty girl running down a building shooting everywhere ?

Silent Hill was a great psychological horror movie. Not much action but that makes the movie more intense imo. The atmosphere is really good both because of the story and because of the visual and sound effects.

The thing is I thought it where to much of the "pysichal horror" and to little of the Psychological. First of all the mother (whoose name I dont remember since she was so unintressting) spent to much time in silent hill with other people, I mean come on! Silent Hill isnt about clumsy dialogue with its inhabitants, its about discovering the horrible truth by yourself(in this case the mother.).

One of the greatest horror aspects of Silent Hill games is the total darkness where you are alone with a flashlight, NOT with a cheesy cop with a gun... Also some of the monsters from the Silent Hill games got more or less "scaled down" when it comes to horror level since the nurses in the movie isnt even half as scary as they are in the games, where they run around franticly with their iron bars or guns while groning horribly. Compare thoose nurses with those in the movie ... Moving like athletics with razorblades (YAY!)?.

Yes I do understand that many people would find a movie with veery little dialogue boring, but hell it would be 1000 times scarier and the producer wouldnt have to spend money on cheesy actors.

But no matter how hard I bash this movie dont get me wrong... I just cant dislike it since I am a Silent Hill fan to the core.

The reason you are displeased with the movie is probably that you can't detach yourself from the game. The movie could'nt be exactly like the game cuz a movie and a game are 2 different things. As a movie, i think Silent Hill was quite good. Not my fav of all-time but definately worth the cinema ticket ! No it wasn't really scary but it doesn'T matter, as long as the atmosphere is good. And it was !

You actually have a point. I dont regret the cinema ticket ^^. Well it is true that I should seperate them more, but the thing is that the movie / games doesnt invoke the same feelings.

I have played teh game, but haven't seen teh movie, yet.
About the game, I must confess it scared the fuck out of me. I admit it, everytime that damn radio began to make noise I was like "Where's te mosnter coming from, where's teh monster coming from?!", haha. I hope the movie is as scary as the game. I hope to see it soon, when I have money to go to the cinema.

Well in the movie the radio did not make that noise very often.....the siren was the thing that declared that...it is going to be dark...and the monsters are going to chase you....though some ooky beasts also wandered in the light....one was that attacked Cybil and Rose shortly after the policelady had arrested Rose.....

Best line ever:

"There is no God here!"

Rose on the Silent Hill Church :[

I am longing to see this movie again but in DVD. I went to the theaters to watch it and I liked it pretty much. I won't make a review or personal opinion about it here because that I already did in the "Movies Made From Videogames" thread.

I bought some months ago a t-shirt which has Pyramid Head in the front. I still have not used it; I am waiting for the right moment, like wearing it during Holly Week or something like that.

another thing, to all you guys who have played SH4 I have a question: does anybody know the song that plays in the middle of the game it goes something like this
"heres a lullaby to close your eyes,
it was always you tat I despise......."

This is what I call coincidence. I came here to write in a thread that I have just started to play Silent Hill 2 again and this thread appears as having just received a post; curious, isn't it?

I also have to admit my admiration towards this little, quite and harmless guy:

I even bought a t-shirt with this same picture drawn in the front.

My admiration towards Pyramid Head started when I was in the control of James and I was walking down completely obscure passageway in the hotel. After some steps, like 6 or 7, a loud noise coming from the radio, louder than the regular sound that it emits when near of a normal aberration, was heard and he was there, standing mightily behind those bars, standing without moving a finger just staring to the front where, unfortunately, you were standing. For some seconds I stood still, waiting for him to do something like breaking the steel tubes and ripping the crap out of me but no! He stood still just staring! Finally I decided to enter the door near the bars, approaching slowly (I regularly walked during the first time I played the game) and I entered the room. Then, when I returned he wasn't there anymore. After this scene I understood the greatness of psychological horror over the now tiresome regular horror.

The following encounters with the Red Pyramid also helped me to see him as that prominent figure that has become for me, encounters where he would rape "Straight Monsters", kill Maria endlessly and even killing himself/themselves.

One thing that stands out from Silent Hill is their heavy use of symbolisms throughout the games and movie. For example, Pyramid Head is argued to be a creation that came out from James' head, used by the cursed town, after he saw that picture of the assassin wearing a red hood, mixed with his repressed sexual desires (because Mary was in disease) and James actions such as resorting to euthanasia to take the life away from Mary (this is why Pyramid Head kills Maria endlessly).

But this is not only present in the games but also in the blasphemous movie. If you realized, Alessa was raped by the janitor. When the janitor is brought back to life (?) you see him with his legs restraint, held back to his head by chains in an effort of making it impossible for him to make any other harm (for Alessa is the one controlling the darkness) and each time that the janitor touches the wall you can see how the wall decays, what is a symbolism of Alessas repulsion of having him touching her, as if his touch stains and defiles whatever it touches.

Unfortunately I haven't played any other Silent Hill game apart from the second one but I am seriously thinking in buying the rest, especially when they must be pretty cheap nowadays. Therefore I can't say which Silent Hill game would come to be my favorite.

I haven't played the fourth game so I haven't heard that song you requested. Now, if you google the lyrics of a song you will certainly find the title of the lyrics. I did some googling and the title of that song would be:
Room of Angel performed by Mary Elizabeth McGlynn . Regarding Silent Hill's soundtracks, I must say that I like very much the instrumental intro of the Silent Hill 2 videogame; I even downloaded it to my computer. It is the one that is played in the video that appears in the menu screen when you don't press any buttons for a while and that was used at the ending of the movie. I like this song pretty much, it is very melancholic with this old school Rock feeling to it; I compare Rentrer En Soi's song "Aqua" to this theme song because of the guitars and the mood of both songs.

Yeah, I noticed. What happened is that it took me such a long time to write that post that it gave you enough time to find the song.

I was thinking about that same thing: which Silent Hill should I play first? Isn't it best if one continues the games in the release order? I haven't read much of the other Silent Hills because I don't want to know the story before playing them so I ask you: is SH3 a follow up to SH2, are they related or are they two different stories which would allow me to play them regardless of order?

I've only played a little of SH3 and didn't really find anything related to SH2 (I've played enough to know that) so I immediatly switched to SH4 and from the beginning of the game u find indications to Walter Sullivan, but I loved the Graphics of SH3 and the fact that u play with a female .
My advice jump to SH 4 and I believe u won't miss anything

OH NO! DO NOT SKIP SH3!
Its the second greatest game of this series and without doubt the most frightening one. My alltime fav SH game is the second, when it comes to story, but when it comes to overall experiance I must say SH3. SH3 I just amazing and is NOT a game you should skip. I have completed SH 3 several times and understood enough that this is atleast as important as any other SH game.

I did however find SH4 very weak. As a matter of fact I havent even completed it. Just lost intresst, the whole koncept of this "safe haven" room kinda turns me off bigtime. I mean It just destroys the feeling that you are never safe that occurs in the other games. Sure the room can get infested by evil spirits! Just light a candle and your safe again... Nothing exciting there.
I must however say that SH4 has a rather exciting story wich I am looking forward to finally experiance all once I have the time to do it.

My advice is however to play SH3 before. Its generally a better game than SH4 and in MY opinion the most intense game in the SH series.

After drinking half of a bottle of Vodka, I watched the first half hour of the movie and I wasn't really impressed. I'd been really wanting to see the movie, but I stopped watching it because...well, I wasn't really in a state of mind that made me want to watch a movie I guess. I remember a pretty hot female cop, but I was annoyed at how fake the monsters looked. I'll probably watch it again sometime...sober.
