Alright boys and girls, I figured we should start up this thread anew in the new and improved forum. Please state your connection to the sub-continent, and anything else you want to say as well, it's just a continuation of the old thread started by Soliloquy.

Heh. I wanted to start the thread....anyhow, let's kick up some conversation here.
So what are your thoughts on the whole Reservation issue? Is it of any consequence to NRIs in general?

I'll post if I do recieve some views on the matter.

The Reservation issue is not confined to India. While India is currently debating it, in Australia we have a similar system, and no-one has really taken any action against it. The main problem in a system like that is that it's harder to get in on pure merit. For example, in Australia to gain entry into Medicine as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, you must have marks above the 90th percentile. However, for everyone else, the entry requirement is 98th percentile or higher! Also, many universities have a quota for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

Hypothetically speaking, if no Aboriginal or Islander got above the 90th percentile, and the highest was 77th percentile, and that 77th percentile student applied for that quota, the university would not be able to refuse them. Sure, I understand that if they are from deprived families then they can have fee-help and scholarships etc, but to allow them to get in with lower marks? And then the government will complain about the fact that they are being forced to bring in overseas doctors because the local ones aren't good enough!

In India I know about the whole SCST thing that they have in universities, and it's exactly the same thing! I understand that if they aren't allowed into the top professions then the cycle of poverty and oppression will continue, but I think that they shouldn't lower the requirements as well as the fees. Make university very cheap for them, that's fine, but if the lowering of standards continues then you'll be faced with the same problem as Australia is facing at the moment.

It's gotten out of hand here. I think they've more or less confirmed that 27% reservation is to be given to the OBCs as well. So that fucks people in the general category up

'Sun is rising as usual in the east. I'm standing here outside the school, waiting for my 10-yr-old kid. He studies in Class 2. Only this year could he get admission into the school. For the last 5 yrs admissions were closed for the General Category students. School bell rings. I can see a lot of happy children coming out of the gate; i waited for half an hour and my kid came at last after the other children. General students are not allowed to cross the gate unless other OBC/SC/ST students have crossed the gates. OBC/SC/ST fathers drive away their children in classy cars. But I have to walk back home with my kid, a 5km stretch. I lost my car some years back when the Govt. came up with a rule that general people have to deposit a tax equal to the cost of their cars, failing which they have to sell the car. As far as buses are concerned, the seats in buses are reserved for OBC/SC/ST. So no place there either.

After walking some 5km in scorching heat I finally reached home. It was Wednesday...shit, no electricity. Every
Mon, Wed, Thu, and Sat there are power cuts in the houses of General Category population, so that SC/ST/OBC can be uplifted by providing them with every opportunity and in that consideration electricity is an important factor.

Its 10:00 pm at night, no electricity at home. Its very hot inside the four walls of my home. So I dare to step out in the park with my wife and kid. I seated myself with my family on a secluded bench in a garden. It was hardly 5 min...a guard came to us strolling in the park. He asked me what caste you belong to. I said with some hesitation, "General". He asked me to pay a fine of Rs.200 and get out of the park. My crime: the bench I was sitting on was meant for again the SC/ST/OBC, for their upliftment and peace of mind are essential things. So Govt. came with this decision to reserve benches for them. Kudos to them...

It's early in the morning...the newspaperwala just knocked on the door. I took the newspaper and started reading. It's Independence Day. I never used to forget this day some 20 yrs back. My kid hardly knows what 15th August is, because I never told him any stories of greatness of our country or anything related to our country. I don't feel like telling him the failures after freedom. On front page of newspaper, in a corner there is news about an OBC member getting 6 months imprisonment in "Bal Sudhar Graha" from a juvenile court for murdering and raping a six-year-old girl. Yes the rules have been amended, since the last 5 years. The culprit was a 25-year-old OBC so age relaxation was provided for trial of crime. So he was taken to juvenile court, since there is an age relaxation for OBC/SC/ST.

About 11am someone gave me the BAD news about the demise of one of my neighbours and friends Mr. Mehta. I went to his house for the condolence next day, his body was lying there still rotting in the heat. I asked his son about the Cremation. His son told me, "Many reserved category have died yesterday so we are not getting entry to cremation ground." This rule is the latest from Govt., where the seats in cremation ground will be reserved for SC/ST/OBC for their upliftment.

Finally next day Mehtaji was cremated. I could see through the flames a liberated Body, liberated from
caste and creed. I was surprised Sun still sets in the west.

It was about 9pm, I was about to sleep in my bed; my son came to me with innocence in his eyes, inquisitively he asked me the question, "What is reservation?" I asked me, "Where you heard that?" He suddenly burst in tears...I asked him to keep quiet. But I could listen through his sobs "Mujhe bhi reservation chahiye (I too want reservation)". How can I convince him its no other toy in the market I can get for him? He kept crying that night, claiming many of his classmates have got reservation. To make him quiet I said, "Ok, I'll buy you reservation at your next B'day." HOPE he understands the bloody concept soon.
Bye Bye India.'

That is an email I got about reservation, I know it's taking everything to the extreme, but then I wouldn't put anything past the Indian government. The place is going down the toilet.

Whoa! Its nice to read that the reservation issue isnt confined to just india.

The Australian issue, I didnt know about that.

But right here in India, Medical college admission is a bitch.

No Wonder I opted for engineering

Engineering is difficult too, admisions screwed up, but more seats than med. Good for me

GRRR! Reservations SUCK!

(Guess my post comes in too late here. I bet this thread was totally forgotten about Thread Resurrection!)

and just a question about indian/pakistani metal scene. how come no other metal genre is theriving half as much as black metal? what sup with that? i'm not saying its bad or anything. but why paticularly black metal? sure, pakistan may have released that 'mizraab' band that kicks some progressive ass. but other than that, its loaded with black metal. how come?

@Soliloquy: In the case of Pakistan, maybe they've all decided to rebel against perceived constraints in religion, and want to express their distaste. That's what BM was originally about: making music that was so radically different and shocking from anything else, and rebelling against whatever they wanted (hence so many of them gave the middle finger to Christianity). Perhaps in Pakistan, they're anti-goverment or religion? I don't know what the situation is really like in Pakistan at the moment, but that would be my guess.

No ideas about Pakistan but India sure has many Black Metal bands comming up like Cosmic Infusion and Grey, there are a few more cant remeber the names. Thought there are a lot more thrash and death metal bands than Black Metal bands here.
Religion in India is not a problem at all as Metalheads have a pretty small community with respect to the large Indian Population and cant bother any religious sentiments.

i'm sure there are more kick ass bands all over india and pakistan that are not on the list. and dont ask me about my opinion on those bands. i just have a few songs by Mizraab, and love them. the other stuff is really rare to find, and therefore i have nothing....well not that i am into extream metal anyways. haha

anywho, i remember one of you guys from india played a violin. which one was that? reason why i ask is coz i have been interested in that piece of wood for a while. so i decided to pick up the instreumtn...and i must say, of all instruemtns i have fucked around with(organs, harps, chellos, guitars, drums, mandelins, bass, tuba, piano, key board etc...) that has to be the hardest instruemtn i have played! in total i spent about 20 minutes on it, and i couldnt even hold it under my neck! i'll just stick to my guitar

That would probably be me. I've played violin for around 9 years, and love it. It is supposed to be the most difficult instrument to play (properly), but if you've learnt from a young age you get used to it.

well i gotta give you props for that! i know bunch of people told me that it really is hardest instrument out there. and what makes it harder is that it doesnt have frets. i didnt seem to have any problem with that. what got me fucked was the size of the neck. it was WAY too tiny. but still...neat instrument

Im waiting for Narsil's album relase, gotta buy their EP soon, no money what so ever, exams round the corner, not many shows happenning, Vayu played in here ( Hyderabad ) yes'day the attendance was very less cos of exams i didnt dare ask my parents , so hows it going in the other cities ?
