Simple, what is the scariest thing you have ever read, played or seen? Personally, I find that not much really scares me in movies or books now days. However, Silent hill 2 or 3 have to go down for the scariest games i have ever played.

From my little experience with horror movies and stuff, i'd say Blair Witch Project would be the scariest movie i've ever seen, mostly because everything seems impossibly real. it wouldn't surprise me that, had i not known it was fiction, i would have thought it was a real "documentary". also most games that took place in some kind of dark and creepy setting like Duke Nukem 3d or parts of Might and Magic 8 kinda scared me when i was smaller, but that was mostly because of my computer screen which was very dark and the fact that i almost never played with sound effects on, which only added to the creepiness and "shit i think there's a monster around the corner" feeling.

Silent Hill is one of the most disturbing and traumatizing games one could play... The third part being exceptionally disturbing...

Doom 3 is the scariest game I've played. Even playing during the day, I almost crapped my pants when the dude with the chainsaw appeared in front of the door near the end.

01.11.2010 - 13:39 Written by BitterCOld on 31.10.2010 at 03:28 Not so much scary as traumatising. I had to get counselling for a week after seeing the front cover. Scariest book I've read is The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum. Not so much scary as horrific, especially since these were based on real events. This book scared me shitless that there are people out there that actually do this sick sordid shit. It kind of ruined my fatih in humanity. And the raping with a coke bottle was very fucked up too.

Scariest game of all time Silent Hill 1 for the Playstation 1, still beats all other silent hill games even with the crappy (by today's standards) graphics. Something about the atmosphere keeps you on edge. After that would come all other Silent Hill games and Dead Space cause you think shit is dead and then it gets up and mauls you when you're not expecting it, leaving you with this shocked WTF?! look on your face while you have to check your drawers lol... Silent Hill 1 got me even with the lights on and there were other people in the room when the body fell out of the locker. Me and my stepson jumped up, screamed, and tried to claw our way out of the wall behind us before we even realized... "hey, this is a game, right?"

"Scary" may not be a very accurate word for this as much as "shocking" is but Snuff 102, which I partially saw, is probably the sickest and the most appalling movie I know of. So far it's the only movie that I just had to stop watching. The thing is, I've seen a fair amount of splatter/gore/sadistic films, but nothing has been close to this. The violence/horror isn't exactly "gratuitous" in the way that gore movies usually portray these things, but instead it's something that gets under your skin and messes with your mind. It didn't scare me much or make me sick in my stomach or anything like that (although I'm sure it will have these effects on many people), but it was something I simply didn't want to watch for some reason. I can't exactly recommend this movie to anyone, except if you're the kind of person who likes to indulge in extremes. Here's a quote of one of the reviews on IMDb to give some idea: The depraved plot of "Snuff 102" is easy to follow: three girls are kidnapped and subjected to sadistic torture and murder by a masked snuff maniac. One of them is pregnant. She is tied to a chair, beaten, her fingers are cut off, she is knocked to the ground and finally the killer stomps her head, stomps her pregnant belly then rapes her with a large knife. During this shocking sequence Mariano Peralta was beaten and injured by the angry viewers of Mar Der Plata Festival. "Snuff 102" has also two shocking scenes of animal cruelty involving monkey and butchered pig. They are nasty and disturbing. The acting is fairly convincing and the atmosphere of total evil is well-captured. However the film asks several uncompromising questions about the evil side of a man. Other than this, nothing approaching "scary" comes to mind really. As a kid some movies definitely were scary (John Carpenter's The Thing scared the crap out of me when I saw it as a young kid), but now the things that are commonly considered "scary" I would describe as atmospheric or thrilling instead. EDIT: As a side-note I find the part about beating up the creator during the viewing of the film extremely hilarious (not the actual beating, but the hypocrisy of the attackers).

Dead Space was one of the scariest games Ive played. Playing in the dark, with headphones on...definitely an experience! Doom 3 had its moments but nothing like Dead Space. Never really played any of the Silent Hill games but I can imagine those being scary. There's a swedish made game called Amnesia: The Dark Descent...Ive never played it but Im told this is a scary ass game!

I havent played Dead Space, but I hope to rectify that soon! The moment when you first encounter spiders in the original Resident Evil is probably the scariest gaming moment for me. You walk into the empty room, only to have a massive tarantula drop from the ceiling right on your head! I jumped out of my skin when that happened. lol

Other honorable mentions for scary games Ive played are Shadowman, and Eternal Darkness. xD I dunno about games, but no-one does disturbing horror movies quite like the Japanese... lol

I also remember PAL conversions also used to have huge black borders, and played slower than the Jap/US versions. There was a lot of hoo-ha about that back in the day, and rightfully so. Oh, and Id also recommend Fatal Frame to anyone wanting to be disturbed, and given a good scare! xD

"Amnesia: The Dark Descent" is great indeed. The Penumbra series from the same creators is probably "scarier" but I liked Amnesia more because of the occult atmosphere and plot. The soundtrack is nice too.
