I made this thread for discussions about the best video game console ever: Nintendo 64, released in 1996. Who never played such games like Zelda - Ocarina Of Time, the amazing multiplayer of Goldeneye 007/Perfect Dark or the great Super Mario 64? Let the nostalgia begin, share your moments and comments about this great system! Well, I'd like to show my games collection. I have these since 2006. The Legend Of Zelda - Ocarina Of Time The Legend Of Zelda - Majora's Mask Doom 64 007 The World Is Not Enough Goldeneye 007 Turok 2 Perfect Dark Catlevania 64 Star Wars - Shadows Of The Empire Star Wars - Rogue Squadron

My kids had one of these back then. I remember the original Mario Kart was a favourite among the parents. It was a really competive game.

And get rid of The World Is Not Enough. In fact exchange it for Conquer's Bad Fur Day, Super Smash or F-Zero. Edit : Forget those games. Here is what started my gaming addiction

Woah, Shadows Of The Empire was a totally awful game! That was quite possibly the worst game I ever played on the N64. Really horrible... And Castlevania 64, whilst not as bad as SOTE, is to date, still the worst Castlevania game I've played. Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, and the 2 Zelda games (especially Ocarina Of Time! <3) are all classics though! I can't believe nobody has mentioned the masterful Mario 64! Which is one of the best games of all time, and still is, the best 3D platformer ever made. Although the Banjo Kazooie games on the same system run it close! If you have not played Mazza 64, get it now! It is a true classic. Other faves of mine from this console include Diddy Kong Racing, Paper Mario, F Zero X, Super Smash Bros, and Mario Golf. I'd also highly recommend to anyone with an N64 who hasn't played it, to grab a copy of Jet Force Gemini. A highly underrated game, and one of the greatest games of that era!

I actually liked Shadows of the Empire. The third person sections were pretty naff but the flying sections were rather nice. It captured the Star Wars feel quite well I thought. I actually do think Mario 64 was overrated though. I perhaps overhyped it before playing it but I was expecting more of an adventure game rather than platformer than it was. It was also quite clunky and too difficult to jump with any real accuracy. But yeah the N64 was an underrated legend. Most of the great games have been mentioned so not much to say but Ocarina of Time probably is the greatest game of all time, though I think you'd probably have to play it in it's era to truly realise it.

31.01.2012 - 02:15 Written by [user id=4365] on 31.01.2012 at 02:04 I always wanted to play that one knowing how revered it is. I was too young to really know what was going on in the N64 era, but I think I could still play that one and enjoy it. You're probably right though because sometimes riding the waves created by a great game around it's release is an experience in itself.

Account deleted Written by Mattybu on 31.01.2012 at 02:15 To be honest Ocarina of Time fulfilled the expectation that Mario 64 failed to fill. I think the problem with playing a game like that retrospectively is that it looks a bit rubbish by today's standards because it's too modern to have that retro charm. It was the best looking thing ever in it's day though and the most time warping game ever. I could play it for what seemed like minutes and a whole day would pass.

31.01.2012 - 02:39 Written by [user id=4365] on 31.01.2012 at 02:22 The interesting thing (well... it's a thing) is that I have Super Mario 64 DS and based on playing that Super Mario 64 really held up as a fun game. I assume it's basically the same as the original with a bit better graphics, but I got that game right around the release of the first DS (I believe it was either launch or very shortly after launch title) and really played the living crap out of it. I think I have 147/150 stars in one file, I would just do everything possible in the levels, get 100 coins, find the hidden star, whatever. And just had so much fun playing it. And don't even get me started on time warp... World of Warcraft time warp can take you weeks into the future (well not really, but there's mad time warp in that one). Fallout series also gave me some pretty major time warp over the years.

Wow this thread has triggered some massive nostalgia in me. The N64 was a great console but will always be second to the Playstation IMO. With Shadow of the Empire I agree with the above post that the flying was way better than the 3rd person, We should have just played Rogue Squadron instead a way superior game with no annoying third person at all.

31.01.2012 - 03:13 Written by [user id=4365] on 31.01.2012 at 02:04 The third person sections were so naff, it pretty much overrode the parts of the game that were decent. And like Agent Orange has just said, Rogue Squadron did the only good thing about SOTE much better, and was devoid of the crappy elements of it, so is in every way, superior. I found that game, and Episode I Racer to be far better, and also captured the Star Wars feel more accurately. The latter is in fact a truly awesome racing game, and was an exhilirating experience. You really felt a sense of danger and tearing along at high speeds in it. xD You mentioned that you played Mario 64 in retrospect, and maybe you did have to play it near the time of it's release to truly appreciate the magic surrounding it. Then again, I was also fully expecting a platformer, and mastered the jumping in 3D quite quickly, although it was initially hard to get to grips with. Again, with Ocarina Of Time, I think you did have to play it in it's era to fully take in the majesty of it. My personal fave Zelda game is A Link To The Past, which also made my jaw drop when I first played it, in fact, maybe even more so. But again, unless you played it in it's era, you probably couldn't fully appreciate it. heehe

31.01.2012 - 03:27 Written by Angelic Storm on 31.01.2012 at 03:13 I played I when it first was released and I though that it was good but was not worthy to polish the boots of the SNES Mario games (not in those exact words mind because I was quite young at the time) which I really don't have to name. I would say Mario 64 has aged quite badly, Its an ugly game to look at (That crappy early 3d look) and the controls feel a bit awkward, The game was influential and all of the 3d Mario titles afterwards were obviously taking ideas from this game, But they all did it way better. Its an important piece of gaming history but I don't think I would enjoy it if I played it today. I think the other N64 titles such as Ocarina of time have held up way better than Mario 64 has.

31.01.2012 - 03:49 Written by @gent_-_orange on 31.01.2012 at 03:27 I personally wouldn't agree with that, although I would say that Super Mario World is the greatest Mario game ever made. Though Yoshi's Story on the N64 was inferior in every way to Yoshi's Island on the SNES. Again, I don't really agree with that. I played Mario 64 again about 3 years ago, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I still found it a lot of fun, and very addictive. As for the graphics, it's aged better than most Playstation 1 games, I have to say... I played Silent Hill (the original) again not that long ago, and was amazed at just how bad the game looked today. And the original Resident Evil, whilst not quite as bad, looks very ropey indeed. And I remember how in awe of those graphics I was at the time!

31.01.2012 - 04:07 Written by Angelic Storm on 31.01.2012 at 03:49 My bad, I was referring to the Mario Games that have Mario as the main character, I have never played the Yoshi games and I dont know if they are regarded as part of the "Main" series. Written by Angelic Storm on 31.01.2012 at 03:49 Indeed, The pre rendered backgrounds look absolutely horrible, I cant believe that game used to seriously scare me, Looking back at it now the scariest thing about RE1 is the voice acting and the horrendous intro sequence which is truly the stuff of nightmares.

31.01.2012 - 07:04 Written by @gent_-_orange on 31.01.2012 at 04:07 They are indeed! In fact, Yoshi's Island was the official sequel to Super Mario World. (The full title on the box art is: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island) If you are still able to play Snes games, I'd highly recommend seeking out Yoshi's Island. It's a more than worthy sequel to the classic SMW, and is an awesome game in it's own right. Written by Angelic Storm on 31.01.2012 at 03:49 I can believe it used to scare me, because I have a fear of spiders, so the sight of the massive tarantulas when I came across them in the game terrified me! And back then, they looked realistic enough to me. lol As for the unintentionally funny voice acting, that is definitely one of the most memorable things about the original Resident Evil! Who could forget such memorable lines as "It might be handy if you, the master of all lockpicking, take it with you!" and "That was too close, you were almost a Jill sandwhich!" *shakes head*

I had MK 4 for the Playstation which is good, though Killer Instinct Gold was a poor conversion of the arcade original I thought. The SNES port of the original Killer Instinct was much better than the N64 port of KI2...

What? Nobody spent countless hours playing 1080 snowboarding? C'mon I know it wasn't amongst the signature titles that have already been mentionned, but still it was really addictive and competitive. And I'm pretty sure it inspired the whole SSX franchise.

Also Blast Corps and Diddy Kong Racing were lots of fun but probably two of the most frustrating games ever. I went through a number of control pads due to me throwing them across the room when I was overtaken at the very last second/couldn't destroy the buildings in time.

Even back then, it was quite ropey in the graphics department, but it did invoke a genuine feeling of dread. I never finished the game, as I got stuck quite a way into it. It was a very tough game too! Ahh... you're talking about the final pig boss (Wizpig, I think his name was...) in Diddy Kong Racing aren't you? God, that was immensely frustrating! It took me several hours of playing that part constantly for me to finally beat him. You really had to run a perfect race, even the slightest error, and you'd lose! hehe

All the people I knew had a PS1; I was the only one with the N64. At downtown, you could buy a PS cd for $ 10 (pirate, of course); a N64 cartridge cost $ 50. So, I was kind of "isolated" games wise. But I don't regret. Anyway, there were great titles for N64. The forementioned "007" is a f classic. It used to bring the "PS fanboys" to my place. And how about "Star Fox"? "I see 'em up ahead! Let's rock and roll!"

I remember the game I wanted more than anything in the entire world back then was Mother 3 (Earthbound 64) which was supposed to come out on the 64DD, which never materialised outside outside Japan (and only sold 15000 units). The game itself was never finished though. Someone should finish the production.
