Generally regarded to be W.A.S.P.'s finest work, "The Crimson Idol" is a conceptual rock opera by a musician who once celebrated sex, drugs and hedonism like few others out of the L.A. glam scene. "The Crimson Idol" is not merely about style and appearance as often accused, for drama and theatrics belie surprisingly ambitious and unique compositions. A major difference to most metal concept albums, though quite common among operas, rock or no, is the album's use of leitmotifs. For instance, the famous extract "love to shelter me" represents the protagonist's recurring desire for his parent's acceptance. The leitmotifs do not, however, take up more space then necessary as all of the songs, save perhaps for the introducing medley of seIected "Idol" riffs amply named "The Titanic Overture", work quite well on their own. Gtear great epic album in all seems band work werry hard , looks concept to me(maybe it is and some in this site from Ned will laught about me agan) a masterpiece whyle other 80's star bands in early 90's wrote weekest from trhe goo album, wasp wrote one masterpiece and carry on till .... rest are awesome, of corse weeker, but for that time and media , specely how media changed, this and other wasp are awesome, this is killer

Posts: 40071 Written by Bad English on 26.07.2015 at 19:57 It is easy to compare the two since they are both concepts albums and tbh Operation Mindcrime is superior in every single aspect (lyrically, musically etc.) He;;, The Crimsopn Idol's concept was already done a year earlier and lots better (musically, lyrically, etc.) by Savatage on Streets. The Crimson Idol doesn't even hold a candle to WASP's own album The Headless Children and tbh that is WASP's ONLY good album.

Jacob - I disagree about it, even both are great, but to me WASP is much better Marcel - how many wasp you have heard? sounds like my school days, dude has 3 wasp albums, never have heard THC and says because other says that's best To me its not so good, even I don't think 1-2 are super great ever, this one and DFW are much better, rare band what can write good albums (even latest on was decend, but weak)

The Crimson Idol is far better than the dull Streets by Savatage. It relies too much on leitmotifs but is consistently exciting and brimming with emotion throughout, and Chainsaw Charlie is probably the best song they ever did - certainly, despite The Headless Children being a strong album, TCI is easily the best thing the band ever did.

This was never intended to be a W.A.S.P. album but Blackie has said the record company refused to release it unless it carried the WASP name. Aside from Blackie's vocals IDOL just doesn't come across TO ME as WASP sounding. I have NEVER been a fan of concept or rock opera albums and this release did nothing to change my mind. I like Chainsaw Charlie but not much else.

Damn I didn't expect such a theatrical, almost like a drama play heavy metal balad of an album. Very powerful. The mix and overall production is rather clean, it's '92 yet the bass has such clarity and the drums aren't an overpowering rumble. A pleasant surprise.
