I used to play before. Played mostly T1. My fav deck was a Goblin Food Chain combo deck. I suppose you know the deal. I quit playing the moment the Mirrodin expansion rotated out, since the game lost lots of its edge for me then. My decklist would look like this, basicly a rippoff from the tournament decks, whit a few tweaks here and there for my own metagame. //Mana 1 Sol Ring 1 Mana Crypt 1 Lotus Petal 3 Mountain 3 Ancient Tomb 3 Karplusan Forest 4 Taiga 4 Wooded Foothills 1 Chrome Mox // Combo Card 4 Food Chain // Creatures 1 Goblin Sharpshooter 2 Siege-Gang Commander 3 Goblin Matron 4 Goblin Ringleader 4 Goblin Warchief 4 Goblin Recruiter 4 Goblin Piledriver 4 Skirk Prospector 3 Goblin Vandal 4 Goblin Lackey Here is a copy paste explaination of the combo for the deck: the combo. 1) get food chain into play 2) play goblin recruiter, stacking your deck with four goblin ringleader on top, with many goblins below. the order should be: top: goblin ringleader second: goblin warcheif third: goblin ringleader fourth: goblin piledriver fifth: goblin piledriver sixth: goblin ringleader seventh: goblin piledriver eight: goblin piledriver ninth: goblin ringleader tenth: goblin sharpshooter followed by all the other goblins or something of the sort. 3) remove goblin recruiter to play goblin ringleader. draw four goblins. 4) remove goblin ringleader to play another goblin ringleader. draw four goblins. 5) remove goblind ringleader to play another goblin ringleader. draw four goblins. 6) remove goblin ringleader to play another goblin ringleader. draw four goblins. 7) remove goblin ringleader to play goblin warchief, and use the excess mana to drop sharpshooter. 8) remove goblin sharpshooter to play four goblin piledrivers the deck can also play straight aggro, using goblin lackey to get siege-gang commander into play for free. It is a really great deck to play and it is very fun and GOOD. Even if you cannot afford the expensive as fuck T1 cards this deck can still compete with other t1 decks. So if you are a poor t1 player this together with Fish deck is the best for the economy.

Account deleted Written by [user id=12867] on 17.01.2007 at 11:56 GOBLIN MATRON IS RESTRICTED? I do not believe that at all, must have been a rule made up by your friends or something. Mainly since Goblin matron isnt really a very good card in itself, so I cant see any reason at all to have it restricted. Here is the current restrict / banned card list in T1 according to wizardsofthecoast and I cant find Matron on that list. As I said I only played T1 Vintage. T2 and stuff like that is to slow for my liking. Vintage (T1) Permitted Sets: * All basic sets * All extensions of the basic set * All promotional cards released by Wizards of the Coast * All limited-edition or large expansion sets * Portal, Portal Second Age, Portal Three Kingdoms, Starter 1999 and Starter 2000 List of Restricted Cards: * Ancestral Recall * Balance * Black Lotus * Black Vise * Burning Wish * Channel * Chrome Mox * Crop Rotation * Demonic Consultation * Demonic Tutor * Dream Halls * Enlightened Tutor * Entomb * Fact or Fiction * Fastbond * Frantic Search * Grim Monolith * Gush * Imperial Seal * Library of Alexandria * Lion's Eye Diamond * Lotus Petal * Mana Crypt * Mana Vault * Memory Jar * Mind Twist * Mind's Desire * Mox Diamond * Mox Emerald * Mox Jet * Mox Pearl * Mox Ruby * Mox Sapphire * Mystical Tutor * Necropotence * Personal Tutor * Regrowth * Sol Ring * Strip Mine * Stroke of Genius * Time Spiral * Time Walk * Timetwister * Tinker * Tolarian Academy * Vampiric Tutor * Voltaic Key * Wheel of Fortune * Windfall * Yawgmoth's Bargain * Yawgmoth's Will List of Banned Cards: * Amulet of Quoz * Bronze Tablet * Chaos Orb * Contract from Below * Darkpact * Demonic Attorney * Falling Star * Jeweled Bird * Rebirth * Tempest Efreet * Timmerian Fiends This is what WOTC say about the specific card "Goblin Matron": Format Legality: Legal In Extended, Legacy, Vintage, Prismatic, Tribal Wars Classic, Singleton, Two-Headed Giant, Urza Block In other words it is not banned or restricted in any way. About the part that the deck is only memories, I have to agree, I sold my deck to a friend so I dont have any contact with this game anymore. Except when I speak to him a little now and then.

I'll go ask a fellow judge in the game and report back then. After all, I'm going to the prerelease this weekend. Methinks you should google it., because I'm pretty damn sure it is restricted man. Actually, it might have been taken off... not 100% sure, but will check anyway

Goblin Matron isn't restricted anywhere. Restrictions happen only in Vintage anyway, not in Legacy or other formats. T2 too slow? Now that varies greatly on which blocks are legal I started playing FNM during Mirrodin, and I played the infamous Affinity deck, which was feared for its speed (and consistency, to boot) - and I still got beat regularly by Tooth&Nail decks that just got their key spell off just one turn before I could swing for the win. Of course, for a Vintage combo player who is used to playing a lethal Tendrils on turn 2, that's still slow ^^

Account deleted Written by [user id=4184] on 18.01.2007 at 12:49 Yes I also played Affinity. The "hated" Ravager affinity. Loved it big time. Together with Tooth N Nail (wich is slow but very fun) thoose where the only 2 decks I really enjoyed in T2. After that Kamigawa came and so on, and it wasnt really my thing. And the banning of the artefact lands was just silly ^^ But at the same time it was very understandable. The whole game was circulating on HOW to counter the Affinity creatures so. I also played extended for a while. When the tempest block was still legal in extended. I played the Teen Titans deck which basicly just built on playing with the "Goblin Welder" to get the imba cards up from the grave into play. Sundering Titans etc where the main attraction in this deck.. Fun while it lasted. After the death of T2 in my eyes, I picked up T1. Played R/B Fish for a while, wich was rather dull, then I played a budget for fun "Egg tendrils" deck. With some luck that deck was really fun XD. Then I picked up the oldschool "Monoblack Suicide" But since it is worthless in the "then" excisting metagame I had to trade it away in the end and went for Goblin Food Chain. Wich was the deck I enjoyed the most from T1 game. I never used Proxis , thus explaining why I did not play the hardcore T1 decks such as Stax etc. But lets face it Stax is the most boring deck ever. As I said I dont play anymore and have no idea of the current metagame in anyway. But I see no apparent reson for a goblin matron to ever be banned or restricted. The card isnt really half as broken as some other cards out there.

The TnN decks I faced were often less than slow. They could go off as soon as turn 4 or 5, and once they went off, they had pretty much won the game - except if their choice of creatures was really poor (such as laying down Vampire/Triskelion with 5 life left and dying from a Shrapnel Blast the next turn ^^) I went on to play a G/R aggro-control deck after the banning, one of my favourite archetypes. It wasn't Tier 1, but solid. We had a pretty healthy metagame, too - from Ponza and White Weenie to MUC, MBC, G/B Control and the occasional weird combo deck. However, the speed had decreased quite a bit. Of course, Kamigawa was a fairly slow block, anyway. Right now, thanks to the Ravnica block's multicolor theme (and the new dual lands, of course), there are all kinds of color combinations being played, and speed has picked up again with decks like W/R "Boros" Weenie and R/B "Satanic" Sligh (both of which are basically weenies with burn added). Well, my own G/W/r deck usually eats weenie decks for breakfast, because my creatures are bigger and I've got plenty of lifegain. Unfortunately, it usually loses against combo and some control decks as it usually needs a few turns to develop, and occasionally manascrews me...

I dont remember what creatures I used to play though, but im pretty sure I used the Platinum angel / (the creature that makes critters u own untargetable) combo and ofc one Colossus and some other. I actually think I didnt use the Triskelion / Vampire combo, since it was weak in my metagame. But well 2 years ago , my memory is lacking the details ^^.

I loved this game back when the newest sets were Legions and Scourge. I like playing with the older sets too, like Apocalypse, Torment, and before that. The new cards just have no appeal to me.

Account deleted Written by Asat0r on 25.01.2007 at 18:58 It's a format that's gradually risen in popularity. Each deck can only have 1 copy of each card, unless it is a basic land. All cards are legal except for ante and dexterity cards, as well as chaos orb and falling star (i'm not sure if that's the correct name for that one). It's virtually like Vintage, but wayyyyyyyy better

Account deleted Written by [user id=4184] on 18.01.2007 at 12:49 I stand corrected: Restrictions are only applied in vintage, thanks for correcting me Oh, and Guiled Light owns Tendrils so hard. BTW, I've really only seen Tendrils been played in Extended at the moment, in a deck that's otherwise known as TEPS. There's too many solutions to prevent it "going off" in Vintage.

Really? I don't play Vintage, anyway, but since you can't counter it the usual way, how do you do that? Gilded Light would work, of course, but that's just one spell, and people don't get many chances to draw one against a Tendrils deck, or do they?

Account deleted Written by [user id=4184] on 11.02.2007 at 17:39 well there are many "free mana" counters in tier 1. The most famous and incredibly good would be "Force of Will". Best counterspell ever made in MTG hands down.

Sure, but against Tendrils (or any Storm spell for that matter) the Force won't help you a lot because it does not prevent all those copies from being created. You just need a Storm count that is high enough to kill the opponent even if a counter takes out one copy, then let the others do their job.

I only liked MTG on casual level, liked creating new strange decks which weren't too good usually, but they were cool for my liking. As I didn't have too much opponents to play against me I quit. Another thing was that i wasn't too fond of the new sets after Onslaught. Didn't like the new cards. I still have my old monoblue wizard control deck though which I find to be quite interesting. I also didn't like the fact that building a decent deck required a large amount of money. I didn't like the tournaments because the decks there weren't usually interesting for me as they were more often than not built of random cards that had synergy. You could say that that's the point of MTG but I like if decks have some sort of "theme" aswell. Might consider to start playing the game again though, sometime in the future.
