The Gentle Storm - Premiere First Track Online

After much anticipation and curiosity, you can finally listen to a song from The Gentle Storm, the new band with Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon, Star One, Guilt Machine) and Anneke van Giersbergen (The Gathering, Devin Townsend). They are set to release the debut album The Diary on the 23rd of March 2015 through Inside Out Music, and now have revealed the first music to be taken from the record. You can watch the lyric video for the track "Endless Sea (Storm Version)" below. There are two different versions: the acoustic (gentle) and the heavy (storm) version. Is it what you were expecting? Share your impressions!

You can also check out the Gentle version of "Endless Sea" here:

Anneke & Arjen had this to say: "Endless Sea is the album opener and it serves as an introduction to our story-based album. Susanne, the main character, sings about her husband Joseph, who has just sailed out on another long voyage to the Far East. We are very excited to offer everybody a first taste of our forthcoming album with the release of these lyric videos. This is such a special album to the both us."

The album concept is a tale of love, loss, and separation told through the story of two fictional seventeenth-century lovers. A Dutch sailor embarks on a two-year voyage, leaving his wife at home in Holland. The only way for the couple to communicate and keep their love alive during the long separation is through letters. These letters form the basis for the songs on the album.

nope, this time music was bad, I even enjoy that calmer version better as 1th one, she was singing good, if this song be different music more less old Nightwish it would be killer . concept and lyrics is good actually, maybe it would work if you keep album booklet or real promotional video (directed by me)

but this band already was popular on MS like 5 weeks before music was out so ... its like take best of best metal stars and then 1th album 100% hip hop

Musical wise, this isn't anything amazing. Quite dull though. What pulls this song together is Anneke's performance. Ain't a fan, but after following her for such a long time, I realized that she knows what she is doing. It seems to me like Arjen has started to pay way too much attention on the album concept and neglecting the music overall. I got this feeling from his last Ayreon album after many listenings. I just hope that this album won't be along the lines of this song...

Actually I liked his work in Ambeon and a couple of his works in Ayreon. Also his Star One project. He has made decent to very good albums but I doubt he will ever top The Human Equation. That album is beyond brilliance.

Decent material but.... the "Storm" version is still pretty gentle. Hopefully the rest of the album gets a bit more uptempo.

'"fooly"? You are so unintentionally funny a lot of times (damn homophones); so yea, listening to some Ayreon albums is a foolish idea.

back to the song - nothing special, rather dull indeed, although Anneke sings beautifully, as usual, but sadly it's not enough I dare say.
I'd rather listen to a solo album of hers, her last one from 2013 was great, I loved it.

I don't consider Anekke as metalhead

What? She sings on Devin Townsends Addicted, Epicloud and Z2. And she has a lot of guest vocals on other metalalbums (Novembers Doom, Napalm Death, Within Temptation & Maiden United for example).

- are you at it again? how is it even relevent if Anneke is a metalhead or not? Anyway, as it's already been said, she collaborated with Devin Townsend and those albums are metal albums (the fact that you don't like Devin, again irrelevent, so poor Anneke who's not a metalhead in your opinions, sang on them). She's been invited and sang on many albums in metal as I see written above. First two albums she did with The Gathering are metal albums, give her credit for that at least!

So no offense, are you a poser or a purist? LOL

Dislike the lyrical approach here, the whole "woman-wailing-and-waiting-for-her-loved-one" seems kinda uninspired and a bit obvious (?) I know it's Anneke who wrote the lyrics but it might be the right time for Lucassen to start introducing some interesting female-sung lyrics next time around; he makes such great male characters yet the women always seem to have the supporting role, even when they're clearly the "lead", like the case here.
Nevertheless, some beautiful harmonies sung by Anneke in this song. Metal music still has to find someone as talented and versatile as this amazing vocalist, her albums with the Gathering are true treasures.
