Ghost - Win Grammy For Best Metal Performance

The Nameless Ghouls and Papa Emeritus III of Ghost took home the Grammy for Best Metal Performance at this year's awards. Ghost's "Cirice" from their latest album Meliora has won in the metal category. The other nominees included August Burns Red, Lamb Of God, Sevendust and Slipknot.

Here they are posing with their Grammys:

Also, Motörhead icon Lemmy Kilmister was remembered at last night's Grammys when Alice Cooper's Hollywood Vampires played the classic "Ace Of Spades" paying tribute to the legendary bassist/vocalist, who passed away recently.

Slipknot, who were nominated both in the metal and rock category, lost both awards. Muse won best rock album.

Well, better them than Slipknot, August Burns Red, or Killswitch, at the very least

I dunno, at least those bands are metal. Not sure I would call Ghost metal, especially not that song.

Best band of the bunch won, but, alas, they are not metal. Just pop rock, really.
it is actually if ABBA would win "best metal performance"

I'll argue for it being a metal song. Dual electric guitars with thick distortion and an extended guitar solo with a guitar rhythm backing it. Lyrics are based on Stephen King's Carrie so definitely masculine. Fits wikipedia's definition of metal and mine too. While it certainly isn't on the heavy end of the metal spectrum and it has a lot of keyboards in it, the roots are there. I'd say its metal.

at least they are vaguely more metal than Jethro Tull...

just what the Grammys consider metal. just realize this is the same business which denied Paul Freaking McCartney (and Beck) access to an afterparty later that night.

the whole thing is laughable.

I'm struggling to think who this is even aimed at. An audience that barely acknowledges that metal might even exist on some far off plane. I feel like they're trying to please someone, I'm just not sure who.

For only $87 a year, you too can decide who wins a golden gramophone: http://www2.grammy.com/PDFs/Members/naras_app.pdf

I wonder what the MS Awards would look like if they charged $87 a year to vote.

I think the Grammies get a little too much hate in this regard. Were any of the nominated songs the absolute best of the year? Absolutely not. But that applies to every genre (except Hip-Hop this year). Your average person will recognize Slipknot and Lamb of God. August Burns Red and Ghost are mainstream names too. They're not going to recognize Cattle Decapitation or Swallow The Sun. Not to mention that the four popular bands I listed are far, far more accessible than a deathgrind or doom band. Same thing applies to all genres. All awards in general, too.

I won't deny there were some questionable song choices though. Slipknot being nominated again for the same album feels like a copout. Identity isn't anywhere near the best song on ABR's latest album, Ghosts would have been a significantly better and more accessible choice. Sevendust isn't a very good band. 512 and Cirice were the only real candidates, and I was happy that it went to one of those two. They weren't my favorite songs or albums, but both bands deserve it.

At the very least it's better than last year. There is nothing lower than a COVER song by a JOKE band winning a Grammy.

Metalstorm users seem to have the most warped definition of what constitutes a metal song/band. It is not a requirement for bands to have deep growling vocals, double blast beats and to play at over 200bpm to be considered metal. The definition of Metal is extremely loose. The only real requirements that seem to be standard are amplified distortion, extended guitar solos and an "overall loudness". Personally, I believe having at least 2 guitars - Rhythm and a Lead - is also a requirement.

By definition, all of these bands are Metal, even Ghost.

Having 2 guitars is a requirement to be metal? That's just silly.

I guess Rodrigo Y Gabriela is at least one step closer to being metal than Motörhead.

Guitar solos? Totally unimportant for defining any genre. A solo is a window dressing, nothing more.

Yep, i've never considered Motorhead to be Metal, they're Hard Rock by my definition. That's not a bad thing, just a different classification.

Completely disagree. Extended Guitar solos are a big turn off for many people. Most people who listen to mainstream only like the singing and most mainstream music has very short or no instrumental solors. All of metal has Guitar Solos. I can't think of a single metal band who doesn't use them regularly. Its one of the defining aspects of this genre.

Then you can't have heard much metal then, particularly much black or doom metal. I would argue the vast majority of metal bands do not feature solos in any significant way.

I would argue the opposite. Almost every definition of metal on the web has Extended Guitar solos, its not like im pulling this out of my ass. Link some some bands that you consider metal that do not have guitar solos.

For what purpose? I could sift through dozens and dozens of bands that don't feature solos, and you could post dozens and dozens and bands that do. The fact remains though that a heavy, thrash, power, death etc. song with the solos removed would still be, inalienably, of that genre, and would still be metal through and through. A solo is a flourish, and rarely of any real or substantial value.

I think WorpeX is entirely deriving his definitions from the melodic and heavy metal subsets of metal, whereby the proposed traits are commonplace (if actually superfluous to genre make-up). I have a feeling he wouldn't consider half the stuff on my profile to be metal...
