Thy Catafalque is a band that I discovered through Metal Storm and for this I shall be eternally grateful. In a musical landscape where terms such as "avant-garde," "originality" and "innovation" are widely used, often without any reasonable justification, Thy Catafalque manage to give these words true meaning. So, following 2015's very warmly received Sgùrr, Tamás Kátai's one-man-band decided to release a new full-length album only one year later. Is it possible to deliver the goods again in such a short time? Let's see.

Quite underwhelming by Thy Catafalque's sky high standards. But very good nonetheless. Main problem is there isn't any single standout or memorable tracks like the last record where all the long tracks were insanely good and the short tracks were awesome unfathomable bursts of melodic black metal energy. Standout track is probably Ixion Dunn. That definitely matches the quality of last record.

I agree. It IS a good album, but it lacks something... I was disappointed especially by the LOOOONG track "Malmok Járnak", that at least 2 times felt like it was gonna explode insanely, but stepped back again, especially near the end when the female singer begins those haunting singing (which I didn't felt necessary...). I was kinda hoping something more "Molekuláris Gépezetek"-ISH... Still agreeing with you, I think "Oldódó Formák...." is a killer song, the best of Sgùrr.

It is a very good album, but I feel like the gap of only a year since the previous album causes this to have less of an impression you might expect from a Thy Catafalque album

When I first listened to it I didn't like it that much and also I believed that 1 year that Tamas had was few for that kind of complex compositions. After a few spins it build to me and I consider this one of the best releases for this year. Every, I mean every, track is well written.

I thought it was an amazing album personally, but the long track was indeed the weak point. Best track is Mezolit, hands down!

Well now, here's an album that practically blows every other record of 2016 out of the water. Well at least it does for me. Utterly fantastic from start to finish. Full of creativity, versatility and finesse without ever confusing or frustrating its listener. I could pick any song from here and hail it as a highlight, but I think the third track (I know, too lazy to write the song titles out) and that monstrously progressive 20-minute behemoth both take the cake. I doubt I'll hear another album with the same replay value or timeless quality as this in all honesty, but that's just my opinion.

So is the album generally comparable to the Ångström track? An album full of that would be great. If that's a one off though it's probably not worth my time.

This. It indeed took me a while to enjoy this though. It is pretty good - by Thy Catafalque standards that is but by normal standards this is like god-tier stuff. Has a lot of very melodic moments with great female vocals. But doesn't much the inhumane and manic aggression and heavyness of Sgurr for me.

Nope. That one is the best track really. The first four tracks are worth listening though and almost on par with Angstrom. Overall, a pretty inconsistent album this with too much slow and meandering parts and places where the soft and electronic parts don't work for Thy Catafalque - almost a first for them!

That's a shame. Guess I'll just chuck that song on repeat every now and then.

Meta celebrated its fifth birthday a couple of days ago and Thy Catafalque posted some interesting facts about it. It is still my favourite album by the band followed closely by Rengeteg and Vadak.

I've listened to half of Thy Catafalque's albums now and I'm surprised that I'm still able to pick up a new(to me) one and have it become one of my favorites.

I love how doomy a lot of this album is. There are plenty of relaxing melodies and atmospheres but the highlight is definitely how heavy things get this time around. The production is kind of rough in some spots but not nearly bad enough for me to care. I was kind of dreading the 21 minute song when I saw the runtime but it's almost a mini album by itself and it kept me engaged the whole way through even though some of its chunks are a little disjointed.

Meta has a lot to offer and Tamás has yet to disappoint me. I look forward to catching up on his other old albums as well as whatever new stuff he makes.
