Hey there, as you have allready noticed this topic is about Role Playing Games (RPG), so lets share, of what you have played, and what you want to play.

Urgh, I could type entire stories in this topic about my passion for RPGS..
My life is based on rpgs, and maybe I even share a bigger passion for rpgs than for metal.
Anyway, there are two rpgs that are the absolutely best rpgs IMO. Those are:
-Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals
-Valkyrie Profile

The first one for being highly emotional. The storyline is really amazing of Lufia II(and I as an addition). Also, this was one of the first rpgs with "big" side-quests. Things we see later back in games such as Final Fantasy VII. The only "bad point" of this game is the difficulity. Only the Ancient Cave and the Dragon were a challenge, the rest was just too easy.

I love Valkyrie Profile because the game is highly original and based on my favourite mythology. The Norwegian mythology. Ok, there are a few lacks compared with the original mythology, but it is still one amazing game. Probably the rpg game with the best soundtrack(go Motoi Sakuraba! ).

Beside these games I am also into Suikoden, Arc the Lad, older Final Fantasy games, Breath of Fire, Tales of.., Breath of Fire etc.

I am not that much into western rpgs, but I do enjoy to play the (older) Elder Scrolls Legend games. Let's say the time when it was still all about the dungeons(Battlespire!). I kinda liked Neverwinter Nights too.

And what about you? You should at least tell a bit about rpgs if you open a topic about it

for me, Diablo II make a difference between past and present. Diablo II meaned the "evolution step" about RPG: good graphics (specially in the movies), a huge variety of items, and a great and original story. to be honest with you guys, i was playing it for 3 years more or less. other RPG games i really enjoyed: WoW (i'm the huge all related Warcraft guy i now), KOTOR and KOTOR II (i like to be "the bad guy in RPG games so i was the most badass sith you ever imagine). and now i'm my brain is being fried by Oblivion, which is another masterpiece of this games, but you need a really good computer to play it fast (i have a Pentium IV which don't have problems with the most recently games and when i play Oblivion and there are big and detailed scenes, like the country side or a watching a city from a high place, my computer starts to get troubles).

My favourite RPG must be Baldurs Gate II - Shadows Of Amn. The first real RPG game i played and it was fantastic. IMO no game like Never Winter Nights, Icewind Dale, Temple Of Elemental Evil etc have been better than BGII. Is Baldurs Gate II the best of them? What do you think?

Hmm, I think there was only one cRPG I played, which I praise to this very day. That would be Fallout 2 (although Fallout 1 was great too). There were other cRPG's that I really liked, namely Neverwinter Nights and Morrowind, but they never achieved cult status for me ;P
I'd like to give Oblivion a closer look, but my system received much damage and I'm running on a crappy graphics card now...
But asides that, recently I came to conclusion that MMORPG's, cRPG's, MUDs and all the forms of computer RPG's in general are repetetive and somewhat boring. So I stick to the original RPGs now

I agree. Neverwinter nights and those others were good, but they lacked the level of involvement and character interaction that BG2 had, and so, it's a game that has lived on for me, and still my favorite RPG.

I'm normally not a fan of hack & slash but I found Diablo 2 fun for a while, and also Knights of the Old Republic 1 was awesome. they're not PURE rpgs, but Deus ex and Vampire: Bloodlines were highly entertaining. Otherwise, I've always wanted to try playing tabletop.. but the only D&D group is in another city, too far for me to travel every tuesday especailly since I have kung fu practice at that time, and I can't join the Vampire: the masquerade group because I have english literature lectures during the time they play in....nooooooooooo!

Well, my group lives in a town 35 kilometers away, so I didn't have that much possibility to play either. Recently we started playing at my place though, since some of them study in my city anyway. But come to think of it, there were members of at least 5 role-playing groups in my old class from highschool. Not much of a problem to find groups in here xD
Although D&D would be the last tabletop I'd pick to play. One of the worst if someone's looking at the role-playing value. Most people in here replace it with WFRP anyway...

Baldurs Gate 2 is definately one of the best (PC) RPGs.

But when in comes to (almost) complete interractivity with your surroundings and free desision making, I'd go for Fallout 2 any time. I've played and completed Baldurs Gate 2 about 7-10 times with different allignments and characters. After the 3rd time you notice how linear the game actually is. But I can say whenever I play Fallout 2 -even with the same character!- it's completely different.

Top (PC) RPGs I'd recommend:

1) Baldurs Gate 2
2) Fallout 2
3) Fallout 1
4) Baldurs Gate 1
5) Exile (Not the complete name, but I last played this game about 10 years ago on my old 486DX. Excellent storyline and gameplay - proof that you don't need fancy graphics and sound to make a cool game. If anyone has more information about this title please comment)
6) Quest for Glory 1 + 3 + 4
7) Diablo 1 (I found it much more Dark and Atmospheric than it's sequel.)
8) Vampire: The Masquerade
9) Pool of Radiance
10) Age of Wonders 1 + 2 (Not an RPG. But it's a very good Stratergy game with a nice blend of adventure, storyline and nice RPGesque upgrades and level ups)

That's it!

@Neveragain : for a fellow Fallout and cRPG fan !!!

And yes, Diablo 1 is grimmer (and better) than the 2.

My list would be (quoting my profile lol ):

Arcanum : Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura (All time fav rpg)
Arx Fatalis
Fallout 1 & 2
Planescape Torment
Ultima Underworld 1 & 2 (underrated jewels !! )
Baldur's Gate II - SoA & ToB

Yes, only cRPGS !! I love computer RPGs.

The game that got me into RPG's was an old,
although new at the time, SEGA Master System
game called; Phantasy Star. I was totally blown
away! It was nothing like anything I ever played
before, and I loved it!

Much have happened since then...

Nowdays I pretty much only play PC (C)RPG's, and
among my favorites are:
The Elder Scrolls II & III (Daggerfall & Morrowind),
Fallout I & II, and Neverwinter Nights.

I've tried a couple of MMORPG's, but all the "l337
d00ds" (did I get that right?) just spoiled it for me.

Personally, I find the best RPG experiences to be
found in PnP/Tabletop RPG's. Sadly, I rarely ever
get the chance to play...

The Elder Scrolls II & III (Daggerfall & Morrowind),

Uhm, do you mean Elder Scrollls I: Daggerfall or Elder Scrolls II: Battlespire?(or both?) Anyway, if you mean Battlespire, did you ever complete it? I stopped when I was in this town in the open air because the game became very difficult at that point. Also because I deselected the wrong things at the begin of the game. I just love this game for its old-school dungeon themed levels. It was very buggy, but the atmosphere was great. The bugs even made the game more charming

If you get the chance, try it.

Blackgir
Battlespire isn't part of The Elder Scrolls series, although it
does take place in the TES "world". I did try it, but I didn't
like it at all, though. (...for the very same reasons you liked
it, it seems... )
Another "non-TES-game-in-the-TES-world" is Redguard, but
I haven't tried it. Unless I'm totally misinformed, Redguard's
a (3:rd person) action adventure game.
Part 1 in the TES series is called Arena. If you're interested
you can download it [here].
...and, of course, part 4 in the TES series is called Oblivion.

Just to clarify:
The Elder Scrolls I: Arena
The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Sorry I couldn't help you with Battlespire, but I'm sure you
can get help [here]. Good luck!

Ah, I didn't know that, I always thought it was like this:
I: Daggerfall
II: Battlespire
III: Morrowind
IV: Oblivion

but I guess you are right. I liked the old-school feeling in Battlespire. Personally I think the atmosphere is great in the game. The bugs were charming, I don't know..it is just a part of that type of games(for that time).

Thanks for the link, maybe I will try it one of upcoming days. I liked Battlespire and the small bits I have played of Daggerfall, so I guess I will enjoy Arena too. I lost my interest in the Elder Scroll games after Morrowind. Morrowind had a too big world, too much pointless wandering and a lack of action. I prefered the dungeons of Battlespire.

I completely missed trying Morrowind so that's what I'm playing right now. (also because of the frustrations that Oblivion worked soooo slowly on my computer...)

Well, I'm a huge p&p fan. I tried to start up my own D&D group but it sort of failed when all of our schedules conflicted. Nobody has time for D&D these days. It makes me so sad.

As for cRPGS, I absolutely loved BGII: SOA and TOB. Also played IWD and NWN, so basically I'm just a Bioware fangirl. I think if BGII had NWN's graphics engine, it would have been a perfect game. Now, I just want to play Oblivion, but I heard it was REALLY buggy. But man, all that dynamic lighting...

I'm really glad Oblivion came out - there's been a dearth of single player rpgs lately. I don't play MMORPGS on principle - they breed idiots. There is nothing worse than having to play a game where the majority of the p;layers are 12 year old AOLERS. Believe me, I know from experience - I played Diablo II.

Ive played my fair share of RPG's. Elder Scrolls Morrowind and Oblivion...which are both 2 of my favourites.

Neverwinter Nights, I started to play but never got close to finishing. Its awesome either way. I'll probably play it again.

Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 - Great stories (first one was better), great gameplay (second one had some cool gameplay mechanics) but the graphics were always weak. However the design (the locations and characters) were all good.

Fable - Good game that could have been so much better...and much longer. I liked the story though. Oh and I liked the fighting and magic system.

Edit: Jade Empire - An excellent story, well designed game, great fighting and magic system. Only bad part was the lack of character customization but still it was a great game. I beat it twice. Great fucking game.

Ive played others but I cant remember which ones.

Baldur's Gate I-II for PC's. I'm probably alone in my opinion on this, but most games marketed as "RPGs" are NOT "RPGs" - or are 'diet RPGs' at best... just one calorie...

The reason I single out Baldur's is because of the level of involvement between your character and the various NPC's - either in your group or abroad. The choices you make in minute conversation have effect on the story arch around you.

I still play actual "pen and paper" D&D once a week with some friends that involves actual role playing to coincide with the 'hack and slash' aspect of the game - character development occurs more than just on your stats or what gear you carry.

Role Playing should be about immersing yourself in a character and, basically, acting. Behaving as how that individual would, making moral choices based more on their character than your own personal opinions, etc.

Of all the various console games I've played, from the original Zelda to Final Fantasy (2,3, 7, 8, 9, 10), to Baldur's Gate to NWn... it's the only one that really incurs direct consequences based upon your decisions.

MMORPGS could be RPGS, but not really. There is a degree of immersion, but even on Role Playing specific servers, there is too much random crap (i.e. "Chuck Norris" and Barrens chat... I swear reading the chat in that zone kills braincells and drains your IQ) to really be an "RPG."

You should try the Fallouts, I don't think there has ever been a cRPG made with as high role playing value. Being eloquent dude, who can get out of trouble with his intelligence, or a guy who is dumb to the point of having troubles with speaking (and man, are people insulting you if you do xD) who will work everything out with one shot in the eyes, it's all there. Heck, you can even be a nymphomaniac lesbian who achieves her goals through bed (and get married with another woman o.O).

I can respect that, role-playing in D&D is much harder than in other p&p RPGs, which aren't as "roll-play" oriented
I remember most of role-playing in my group really started with release of 2nd edition of Warhammer: FRP. Although for some reason, ever since we started playing the 2nd edition, the characters we made turned out to be the actual "bad guys". Recently I even heard there was some bloodshed in the team, as two characters stole vodka from the third (sleeping) one. It was even a common custom to cut beards of dwarves in the group... That is until I decided to play one and mauled an elf who even joked about it... Then paying another team member to piss upon his face.
But of course we also made more important stuff. I once even managed to get behind bars servant and wife of a local merchant, for murdering him. Although it was me who murdered him in the first place (first solution that springed to my mind when he started yelling, because we "lost" the carriage we were supposed to guard)... Fun stuff.

I've tried Baldur's Gate II at my friend's once, and it seemed quite nice although its been years since that. As people are praising it here, perhaps I should get it...

I'm not an RPG fan, actually the only game I have that is even a bit like an RPG is Diablo 2. The bad side about this game is totally the internet gameplay. Just what the hell is fun running around the same bosses collecting items? I mean, people get boosted by others and then its all about hunting items. No storyline, no nothing. Just random shit between 'runs' and trading items. The single player, on the other hand, is rather fun and more realistic.
