Can someone explain this photo for us non-Americans though.... like are they being ironic and making fun of people who pose with guns like this, or are guns as popular in Canada as the US (and therefore this is a serious photo)?

Our gun culture here is significantly smaller in comparison to the US (then again, whose isn't) but you can usually tell if someone is mocking or not based on what type of guns they have and if they practice proper trigger discipline. Proportionally speaking, Canadians actually are fairly well armed, even though our government is continually taking strides to remove our right to self-defense. But that's a conversation for another thread.
