Although The Formulas Of Death was long in the rear view mirror, Tribulation were still being described as ‘kings of gothic, deathly metal’ at the time of the release of their last record, Where The Gloom Becomes Sound. On Sub Rosa In Æternum, it’s safe to say that any lingering connections to the band’s more extreme beginnings have been almost entirely severed.

I know it's gonna be tough to beat the follow-up "Where Glooms...", "The Formulas Of Death" and "The Children Of The Night", let's see what it revolves around this time.

Having new album excites me.

Goes in my wishlist.

Sorry but wtf is this? A tribute to Type O Negative or Moonspell? Meh.

I'm really not sure how I feel about the new singles. That cover is their worst by a mile too. I get a feeling this could be the first bad egg in their Discography. Hopefully I'm wrong because I love this band.

Well.... I was very wrong. It's not the Tribulation I fell in love with but it's still a fantastic version of them.

I had low expectations, after the departure of Jonathan Hultén, but I was wrong. This is very enjoyable gothic rock/metal, and the softer songs, like "Hungry Waters" or "Murder In Red" are great. If The Sisters Of Mercy somehow magically released a song like "Poison Pages" in 2024, I'd shit my pants. I am very glad that Tribulation did it, though.

I know this is X-Ray Rod one of fav bands,
To me well even evolution is good, and still its much better as gothic collogues from Unto Others, but seems to many bands now do such thing, not happy whit it even I like in some way gothic.

Another great effort by this band and one of the finest albums I've heard in gothic metal this year, definitely prefer this to what Unto Others presented earlier this year anyway. It's also fast becoming one of my favorite albums from this band.

We fall in love with a band when we love their genre and the their unique sound which stands out in that genre even if the genre ia done to death. I dont want Slayer to play soft rock and the same with Tribulation also. Whatever they played here ia anything but Tribulation. And wtf is this clean vocals? ?!!!...Still I am confused over the concept of 'Originality'. Does it mean that one should sound like someone else..!!!!...
Btw, the album has some great tracks (if rendered by some other band).

In the beginning I was made of clay. Then I bit the apple and they changed me to metal 🤘

I think the album is just super fun, due to the embrace of the hookier goth stuff. And due to the hookier focus, I don’t think this one should be judged so critically. Going on the ride is the fun part of this band. I don’t clutch on too tightly to a particular era. I think you miss out on the present by focusing on how “they’re not the same anymore.”

Sisters of Mercy are back? What's going on? This is good album in case of compositions, arrangements and sound but most of the tracks are rather rock not heavy or black.... It's mix of rock, gothic, pop, black... but rather not raw metal of any kind. No blasts or screams, no speed, no very heavy riffs...This is not a problem for me as I like this kind of music, but still - this is not "full size" black metal anymore.Looks like they want to join rock music mainstream, join radio stations and get some popularity playing ordinary/popular music. Hungry waters is one of the best tracks - far from metal domain. There are more good compositions on the album which I love to listen to. Don't know how to rate this album - from "metal perspective" it could be rather around 6, but from originality, composition and performance it could be even 9. For sure this is something you must listen to and get your own opinion.

"Hungry Waters" and "Murder in red" were ok-ish, but the rest was very mediocre. Not as good release as the earliers.

Why the comparisons with Unto Others? Both have Gothic influences but while Unto Others is mainly a Heavy Metal Band Tribulation range from Death Metal (a lot of similarities to the last Dissection LP) to pure Wave/Gothic.

I like some of the older records better, but this is still not a bad one.

Fave: Tainted Skies
Also realy good: SCD, HW

I've underestimated or misjudged this album. The melodies were so immediately pleasing, memorable, accessible, that I expected the appeal to vanish equally quickly, like eating cotton candy.
After many months, and many repeats, the fascination is still there, and every now and then I discover new details and nuances. And I've started very leisurely going through their back catalogue and it's delightful.

The clean vocals spooked me a little in the beginning, but with continuous listens I have started to live this album. This album has some of the best songs in the gothic genre. Definitely one of the highlights of yesteryear.
