So who's looking forward to Skyrim and why? And I'm sure that Staff will want this to count as THE Skyrim thread when it comes out so once it's out what are your thoughts on it? I just recently got Oblivion and have been playing it and it's pretty kool, I like it so far and I'm pretty sure I want Skyrim. So since I'm thinking of getting Skyrim I'm not sure if I want to go ahead and run through Oblivion first (which I realize will take me a long time) and then get Skyrim or if I want to just go ahead and get Skyrim and play through that [since it's not actually a direct sequel to Oblivion I shouldn't really be adversely affected by not playing Oblivion first] and then maybe one day go back and finish Oblivion, lol. What are other's thoughts?

I haven't played Dead Island, so I can't compare those two...

I guess I liek Fallout, just because I really like the Apocyliptic feel.

Yeah, the environments in Fallout 3 were pretty cool. I just found the combat a little hit and miss is all.

I recommend Dead Island. Great fun, and the multiplayer co-op adds a nice dimension to it.

I'll probably pick it up used one day when I'm in town, it seems fun enough. Is it a fairly big map?

Yeah, pretty massive. And there are 4 starkly different environments that you progress to throughout the main story that are cool to explore.

Yep...good weapon system that allows mods and upgrades of items you find in the environment.

For all the hype RAGE got, I thought it kind of blew donkey balls. I was all excited to get it because it was advertised as Borderlands meets Mad Max. Well they got the Mad Max part right but the game is only vaguely similar to Borderlands, no where near similar enough for me to understand how anybody could ever draw any comparisons between the 2. Glad I only spent $20 on RAGE for all that disappointment...

I enjoyed Rage for what it was...a great looking FPS with some cool enemies, environments and artwork. And, whilst I think the car combat system was a bit shit, I still give id credit for trying to blend in something new into their games.

Wolfenstein (2009 version)...now that blew donkey balls.

I was severaly disappointed because it was advertised heavily as "an RPS style game comparible to Borderlands" and it was not an RPS at all nor is it anywhere near as engaging and amazing as Borderlands.

Agreed, it was certainly not an RPG nor RPS...purely an FPS. I can see how this would've p1ssed people off, as they got something very different to what they were expecting. Most likely why it received such negative critiques in the media.

I still maintain, as an FPS, it was very solid.

I guarantee you 100% that's why it bombed after it's release and why only 6 months after release you can pick up a NEW copy for $20.

Thinking of the game as just an FPS, yea I suppose I would have to say it's a fairly solid FPS but I'm still so pissed off at them for their marketing tactics that the game doesn't have much replay value for me right now.

The thing that gets me about a lot of the games these days is there are some companies out there like Radical (Prototype) and Volition (The Punisher, 2005) who use this genius idea of Play+ (or Play Plus) feature in their games to let you play through and unlock all this cool stuff in the game and then give you the option to play again with all the stuff you earned on your first playthrough of the game and not many other developers seem to realize how genius of an idea that is and incorporate that feature into their games. For example, if Rage and BulletStorm had included Play+ then the replay value on those games would be incredibly higher than they are and I wouldn't be any where near as disappointed in those 2 games as I was after finishing them and finding out that there is no Play+ feature...

Agreed. Dead Island did that well...allowing you to start all over again with the kit and loot you had from the first play throught. Great game!

I will have to check out Dead Island then, I'm not really into the whole "zombie apocalypse" thing but I do enjoy a good FPS and if the developer was smart enough to include Play+ then the game's gotta be good cuz Play+ means high replay value instantly (at least in my experiences)...

Then Arkham City is a game for you in case you haven't tried it. Play+ with the game more challenging and a shitload of unlockable contents and sidequest.

Dunno, I think it's just an abreviation to explain restart the game with your last known gear, LVL and stuff.

Didn't even knew this stuff had a name and as I start to think about it, its a pretty standard option nowadays mostly in action driven rpg games.

Dead Island is more RPS than FPS; i.e. it has side quests, sandbox world, character development, etc...

Yea, I heard some other people call it Play+ when I first learned about it and just always call it that since, New Game+ does make more sense though.

Hmm...if it's more RPS than FPS then I'm definitely more intrigued by it now. Not enough RPSs out there for such a good idea.

IS THERE ONLINE MULTIPLAYER FOR SKYRIM, ON A CONSOLE (PS3)?!?!

There is no official online multiplayer for Skyrim. Some of the people in the PC modding community are working on making an unofficial online multiplayer add-on mod using the tools that Bethesda released for modding the game on the PC. Last I checked (which was a couple months ago) they were still beta testing the mod...

I think what Fogg is talking about is the The Elder Scrolls: Online game that is being worked on right now for a tentative 2013 release that is a TES based MMO set 1,000 years in the past and gives players the chance to do quests and explore all over the continent of Tamriel.

TES Online will probably be crap, like every other MMO adaptation in the history of video games. Besides, I don't see how the feel of the series would even translate into a multiplayer environment, considering the protagonists have been gods reborn, blessed with dragon blood, lords of Oblivion planes, the emperor's personal lackeys and whatnot. As a series, it's always been very epic and hero-centric, which doesn't translate well into multiplayer. If you think everyone being a jedi in TOR is lame, what about a few thousand heroes of Kvatch and a handful of Nerevarines?

Really wishing the next single player TES will be in Elseweyr, by the way.

So! I finally bought the game from the Steam Summer Sale. Gotta say I'm liking it more than I expected to. Oblivion was a bit of a disappointment with its bland setting, uncompelling story, carbon copy dungeons and Oblivion pockets, and so on. Skyrim is pretty generic too, but it pulls off its flavor really well and puts me in the good old Bloodmoon days. Much more attention to detail this time around, and though the levelling and other gameplay is oversimplified, at least the perk system adds some compensation for losing the richness of Morrowind. And the story seems epic and gripping like Oblivion never did. Really cool the way they handle NPC conversations and events in the world more seamlessly than traditional cutscenes, too.

I have already modded my game to hell and back. I'll post my full mod list in a bit, but do you have any recommendations? What are your must-haves?

On another note, how many here have actually played through Daggerfall? I've had the free copy lying around for ages, but I never got further than character creation. I take it it's the best game in the series after Morrowind, but I'm not sure if it will feel a little too dated after Skyrim. (I mostly play stuff like Planescape: Torment or Baldur's Gate though, so I'm not that easily spooked.)

You might already have this but the FXAA Post Process Injector. It's impossible to overstate how much this improves the visuals to the game. In fact once you've used it you'll wonder how they got away with the vanilla look as much of the detail is seemingly obscured. This basically anti aliases everything and gives it a really crisp and defined look, compared to the extremely blurry vanilla version (doesn't matter how much you turn the game's AA up). I think it comes with a bunch of other tweaks like colour saturation effects but they can all be turned off or down etc. I didn't alter them too much as I quite like the default colour of the game. The great thing is you can switch it on and off in game with the delete key, which shows just how poor the vanilla version is.

Not the biggest picture in the world but even on this you can see the difference:

(right click, open/view image etc)

I honestly feel a bit sorry for any PC player that went through this game without this mod, as it makes an average looking game very pretty indeed.

I also use an SMAA injector for most other games too, it supports most of them it seems. All you have to do is drop a couple of files in some folders and it's done. In many cases it's better than the game's AA and only costs a couple of frames in performance, as opposed to the much heavier hit of in-game AAing.
