My religion is absolutley no religious orientation. I don't activley woship any god, I don't deny the possible existence of some form of god(s), and I don't give a damn. Before we start making theory's about deity's, we should first learn as much as we can about the known world. Only when EVERYTHING about the physical world we live in is known should we even approach the concept of a god.

But, seriously, it's inadvertently an argument against theism. Foxholes (during wartime, of course) create fear and fear dulls the critical faculties, thus making theistic claims seem more valid. It suggests that theism is irrational. Imo. (And mo is right.)

I don't follow your reasoning. Would a person in a foxhole be more likely to believe in God? Is that what you are saying? And why would theistic claims like, say, "Jesus died for your sins" seem more valid? Just because you are on the verge of death? And what is "rational?"

Because the aphorism on hand suggests that people in foxholes aren't atheists, it's suggesting that, because foxholes are terrible places to be, theistic beliefs are more likely to be held by those in terrible places. Seems true enough, by the way. That'd explain how the saying got to be as popular as it is.

Fear and the desire for an afterlife are likely feelings felt by those in dire, potentially life-threatening situations. There are no atheists in foxholes because there are no people thinking clearly in foxholes. At least, that's what I get out of it.

Theism simply means "belief in god or gods". I didn't mean to imply that foxholes make the likelihood that certain myths revolving around the larger, theist myth greater.

More to the point it's a crutch, addicts, former addicts, fear the knowing you'll die during combat. It's also psychological factor, a soldier that believes in a magical sky kingdom is more likely to risk death for his governments profit.

Yeah, good. It is a different question whether a theistic belief is rational or not, but even if it is not that does not mean it is not true or that it is "bad." Irrational does not necessarily mean wrong. We do many things irrationally: fall in love, decide to go Zimbabwe for a weekend for an unknown reason, suddenly switching to a different type of bread with out any reason. And maybe in the end, it will appear that the bread is actually better.

So my point is that it is not a good idea to obsess with rationality and rejecting everything that is believed not to be such. Also, one final thought: theistic belief can be both rational and irrational. There would be some emotional component most of the time, but in most cases 'faith' wouldn't be entirely irrational.

Yes, however just because we do irrational things does not make them right either, does falling in love always end well? I don't think there's an point where faith over logic is rational.
