09.01.2010 - 04:55 Written by ß on 09.01.2010 at 02:33 I was looking into that...it doesn't look like an open air fest to me...We have similar indoor fests here. Our latest was Noctis III with Cynic, Destroyer 666, Slough Feg, Novembers Doom, Suffocation, Aura Noir and a bunch of other bands not really worth mentioning.

@ FoxZdemoN - I'm not quite sure I checked the site and I don't think the bands have been announced yet this year @ Doc - That's a pretty good lineup by the looks up. When it comes to Metal fests here it's pretty inconvenient because of all the damn travelling you have to do

@Soliloquy: Hey, sorry dude! I only read your post now. I am Indian. My father is from Rajasthan, and my mother is from Punjab (although I can't speak and don't understand a lick of Punjabi! Haha). What part of India are you from? As for open-air metal festivals, there's Heavy MTL which is supposed to become an annual thing. Although they don't feature the most underground metal bands (or at least didn't for their first edition), they still have some pretty decent line-ups. I had a great time at the last one. I'm just hoping it doesn't get too mainstream, and they don't start introducing more radio-friendly bands. It's definitely a bitch to travel to different spots of Canada considering how vast our country is, but if you're dedicated enough, you can do it! I met quite a few people from all over Canada (BC included) that came solely for the festival.

@Nexus Maybe if there is another one of those festivals and it's good I'll go. Been a while since I've been to Quebec.

It's pretty certain that there's gonna be another one this year. There was supposed to be one last year as well, but there were too many big bands that had passed during the summer (Metallica, KISS, Motorhead, a few others), so they didn't go through with it. But if you end up coming, and you aren't a psychopathic axe murderer, my place is always open, as there's already a couple of other people I met at the last Heavy MTL that I've kept in touch with who'll be crashing at my apt if the lineup's good this year, so it'll definitely be a good time.

Http://www.metalstorm.ee/events/event.php?event_id=44742 There's the lineup for ya. I'm a bit disappointed to be honest ... hopefully the lineup gets better as more bands are added. The only bands I'm really excited for are Slayer and Megadeth ... but I've been waiting to see them together since like, uh, fucking september? Haha. Rob Zombie should be all right too.

That actually looks pretty decent. I've missed both Slayer and Rob Zombie a number of times and have wanted to see them. Megadeth and Testament are always solid, and I could go see 3 Inches Of Blood for the 3000000th time, because they're always solid.

It's definitely cool that there's a 'metal' festival in Montréal ... but the first year was pretty average with regards to the lineup, and it just seems to be going downhill from here. But I'm pretty happy that at least I live in a city that has many metal acts that frequent it ... I could live in some deprived town out in the middle of buttfucknowhere like Calgary ... oh wait ...

17.02.2010 - 12:41 Written by Nexus on 17.02.2010 at 04:16 Hey! Fuck you! We've got...yeah, you're right. Though we are proving to be a massive metal market, Prog Nation (w/ Opeth & Dream Theater), Metallica, and Motorhead w/ Nashville Pussy & Reverend Horton Heat all gave Calgary an additional 1 night that they didn't do in other cities (I think Metallica did it for somewhere down in LA as I recall). So the culture here? Fucking terrible. The metal scene on the other hand is getting real good. In other news, who caught tonights (well, last nights now) Mens Olympic Hockey game? We pretty much made Norway the one cup between the two girls. 8 - 0 shutout, next up Switzerland on Thursday!

21.02.2010 - 19:11 Written by Doc G. on 17.02.2010 at 12:41 Metallica did two consecutive shows here as well, if I recall correctly. Although it seems like Motorhead, Opeth and Dream Theater have a particular soft spot for Calgary . Well, at least you aren't getting totally fucked over then. I always thought that most bands that would pass through Canada (if they weren't super huge) would normally go to Vancouver, Toronto and Montréal most of the time anyway, while neglecting other smaller cities. Good to hear that metal's as alive and as strong on the other side of the country as it is here even in smaller places. Can't say too much with regards to the culture, however as the only provinces I've ever been to are Québec (of course), Ontario and NB.

23.04.2010 - 09:15 Written by Bitter Dawn on 23.04.2010 at 09:10 Are we talking population wise or like...surface area type shit? I forget what list I was looking at that said Calgary was #3. Either way, the topic at hand was different cities across Canada being overlooked for tours, Calgary is really getting up there in size.

23.04.2010 - 22:35 Written by Doc G. on 23.04.2010 at 09:15 That was population wise, area wise does seem to vary depending upon metro, urban and overall area per inhabitants. I've noticed that Calgary is getting more hits with bands stopping in but, it seems like eastern Canada gets all the best shows. I really wish some good bm bands would come to Canada though.

Do all these bands out there not take Canada seriously as a metal country or something?

09.05.2010 - 14:10 Written by [user id=2084] on 09.05.2010 at 06:04 Wish I had an answer for ya man, I'd like to know as well! From what I've heard in regards to at least Vancouver is, that it's fairly expensive to come here and often not worth the expense. In the US most foreign (or any) bands can travel on a bus and do several high populated shows within a relatively short distance, so in theory they make more money for the distance traveled. I would say that's due to the US having a higher population than us. Similar idea with Europe, most of the countries are rather small and so close to one another that it gives bands a decent area to travel with a good average of higher populated venues - kind of like travelling through several US states. I think that our cities in Canada with a generally lower population than the US and Europe per area when compared, it makes it more difficult for bands to make it worth their while, thus why most bands touring the US will pop up to Canada for one or two shows and then go back down to the States and, then some times pop up back into Canada when they're on the other side of the country and then go back into the US to finish up their tour. As opposed to driving across Canada to do probably a quarter of the amount of shows they could do in the US if they just drove straight across it. It sucks big time though, no doubt about it..what ever the actual reason is.

Maybe we should start a website and get every Canadian metal fan out there to put in five dollars for the gas and the bus...whenever we catch wind that a band is on tour on another continent, we would simply link them to our website...we could have have a big banner on the website entitled BRING MORE METAL TO CANADA! The website could be something like www.more-heavy-metal-for-canada.com...

Anyone have a link to the tour dates for this? I haven't been able to find them.

16.05.2010 - 19:39 Written by Bad English on 16.05.2010 at 19:32 I guess they figure it's easier simply not to let anyone in who can't legally drink. Bar owners don't have to worry about getting nailed for someone underage "accidentally" being served. It doesn't stop under age people from getting in, though. I started going to bars when I was 15. I looked like I was well into my 20's, so I never got ID'd. In my younger days I was in a band with an 18 year old guitar player who had to go out in the hall between sets. He was allowed on stage to perform, but he couldn't sit in the bar if he wasn't playing.
