Simple, what is the scariest thing you have ever read, played or seen? Personally, I find that not much really scares me in movies or books now days. However, Silent hill 2 or 3 have to go down for the scariest games i have ever played.

I'll tackle the video game spectrum...however, you must meet these requirements:

- played on PC
- played at night in the dark
- nice set of headphones

1. Doom 3
2. F.E.A.R.
3. Condemned: Criminal Origins

+1 for F.E.A.R. really made me at one point jump out of the chair and I usually just sit through a scary thing as my hair rises up and my eye start to bring a tear. Also scary is Dead Space when one of those zombies come from behind and scares you,you just shoot like a total goon without thinking .
Scary movies,I can't really decide, because they had their moments, though I think it has to be with ghost, because the other horror themed movies are usually kinda stupid or blunt.

Thief: Deadly Shadows contains THE most disturbing and downright scary level that I've had the pleasure (or pain) to play, "The Shalebridge Cradle". Man, I swear the first time I played this level, I was THAT close th peeing my pants, but eventually I pulled through.

The Shalebridge Cradle Briefing

Thief: The Dark Project is unnerving and eerie as hell, and even though it offers very little "paranormal" activity, the game is just unnerving to play from start to finish, in particular the "Haunted Cathedral" level...

A video game will always be scarier than a film or book, not just because of the level of interaction but because of the uncertainty principle (not in the quantum mechanics sense of course). A film or a book will always go the same way whereas a game won't.

The first couple of Silent Hill games will always evoke the most fear for me because of its reliance on psychological fear rather than shock tactics but I agree with the Doom 3 and Dead Space comments too, as well as Resident Evil 1. The cut-scene with the Hunter making its way through the gardens to come find you will always rank a good 9.9 on my What The Fuck Is That-o-metre.

These days resident evil is nothing but an action game. But then again neither are any of the other horror games. Look at Alan Wake.

System Shock II, beyond any doubt. 10 years later, no game had made me feel like that. Other games are survival games. System Shock was fear, shock, horror and atmosphere of death...

Currently playing Silent Hill 4. Got some pretty fucking creepy moments. Ditto on the early Resident Evil games too, even on a pink DS the horror remains.

As for films, the Shining still freaks me out..

Codemned has one of the best atmospheres in gaming. But i think the early clocktower games were scary as fuck.

The scariest games I've played are Dead Space with Resident Evil 4 not far behind. Dead Space in the middle of the night, every light in the house off except the TV, a lot of jumpy moments come from that. And there's really weird things that add to the atmosphere like every now and then you'll see a survivor on the ship sitting there, and they'll just babble some stuff and shoot themself in the head right in front of you. And that part in the game where the whole cult thing came into play. Very scary and fun game for me.

The scariest game I've ever played is Amnesia, though. That game will wreck you.

I found it hard to be scared by Resi 4 as it's more action based than anything. Actually even the Dead Space games didn't scare me that much, maybe I should have played them in a harder difficulty.

I've been avoiding that game because, as I've heard, you can't go toe-to-toe with a monster and blow its brain, but I've heard so much good things about it, I'm gonna have to try it. I just hope there won't be too many puzzles. I hate puzzles in video-games.

Heh, me too. I'm a very simple guy when it comes to video games. I just want to shot the fucker and walk away

That's why I really liked Doom 3. Scared me the fuck off and was easy to play

Scariest movie: The swedish thriller/horror film "Vita frun" from 1962. Saw it when I was like 4-5 years old the first time, I've grown up with it (I must have seen it over 50 times) and still to this day the one thing I can think of in the dark and the one thing that really scares me is her, vita frun (lady in white). My little sister and my dad too, I think, feels the same. I swear, if I like was in my grandmother's scary old gigantic house at night and I suddenly heard the piano tune the lady in white wrote in the movie... I think I'd scream and cry my eyes out. To me that movie is the essence of all my horrors and fears.

Scariest book: It's either "Misery" by Stephen King or "The Ruins" by Scott Smith. The first one for being so damn... psychological painful and King's ability to write a book about a man trapped in a bed. The other one for the same reason, the way Smith manages to make you feel like you really are trapped in the djungle with some nameless thing after you. I almost feel the sweat dripping when I read it.

Scariest game: I rarely play games and this answer depends on how old I was. Gun to my head, I have to choose, I'd say... "Silent Hill 3", maybe? Possibly just because it's such a great game overall. But the game which made me shit my pants the most during the years was "Clive Barker's Undying". Damn, the atmosphere in that game was awesome! I don't think I would play this game today, for the main reason that it could spoil the great memories I have of it. It could possibly be a shit game, so it's better to let 12 year old Warman have it to himself.

"Scary" may not be a very accurate word for this as much as "shocking" is but Snuff 102, which I partially saw, is probably the sickest and the most appalling movie I know of. So far it's the only movie that I just had to stop watching. The thing is, I've seen a fair amount of splatter/gore/sadistic films, but nothing has been close to this. The violence/horror isn't exactly "gratuitous" in the way that gore movies usually portray these things, but instead it's something that gets under your skin and messes with your mind. It didn't scare me much or make me sick in my stomach or anything like that (although I'm sure it will have these effects on many people), but it was something I simply didn't want to watch for some reason. I can't exactly recommend this movie to anyone, except if you're the kind of person who likes to indulge in extremes.

Here's a quote of one of the reviews on IMDb to give some idea:
The depraved plot of "Snuff 102" is easy to follow: three girls are kidnapped and subjected to sadistic torture and murder by a masked snuff maniac. One of them is pregnant. She is tied to a chair, beaten, her fingers are cut off, she is knocked to the ground and finally the killer stomps her head, stomps her pregnant belly then rapes her with a large knife. During this shocking sequence Mariano Peralta was beaten and injured by the angry viewers of Mar Der Plata Festival. "Snuff 102" has also two shocking scenes of animal cruelty involving monkey and butchered pig. They are nasty and disturbing. The acting is fairly convincing and the atmosphere of total evil is well-captured. However the film asks several uncompromising questions about the evil side of a man.

Other than this, nothing approaching "scary" comes to mind really. As a kid some movies definitely were scary (John Carpenter's The Thing scared the crap out of me when I saw it as a young kid), but now the things that are commonly considered "scary" I would describe as atmospheric or thrilling instead.

EDIT: As a side-note I find the part about beating up the creator during the viewing of the film extremely hilarious (not the actual beating, but the hypocrisy of the attackers).

Have you seen "A Serbian Film"? That one, along with "Hora" and "I Spit on Your Grave", are the most shocking films I've seen. Why do I keep on watching movies like those...

Yes, I've seen "A Serbian Film". It might be better as a movie (still a bad movie though) but it's simply nowhere near as shocking as Snuff 102 seemed to be IMO.

I can't say, actually. I only played it for about 30 minutes at my friend's house. The fact that I'm not a PC gamer at all really added to the tension. Fucking mice and keyboards aren't my friends. Anyway, I ended up spilling some beer on his keyboard at one point. So that's got to be worth something. It's engrossing enough to cause spastic movements outside the game.

I used to not enjoy puzzles too, but I'm playing Darksiders right now (the most shameless of the god of war/zelda rip-offs), and am finally coming to appreciate them. I think. As long as they aren't too long and have enough combat hidden in them, I'm happy. They can provide a nice change of pace. I think it's Portal 2 that actually changed my mind, though. Luh-huv that game.

You cant say its a rip off of god of war, because all god of war did was take a tried and tested formula, turn the gore factor up and refine the controls. There are so many of these types of games, such as dmc, and bayonetta, but you really have to find the ones that know how to use the formula.

Back on track though, I think condemned is scary as shit on the hardest difficulty.

To put it as mildly as possible, that part is absolutely fucking sick. It almost made me give up on the game.

To add to the topic, has anyone here played "The Suffering"? It's far from being the scariest game, but I remember being scared shitless with it when I was younger. It's pretty heavy on action too, so it can easily please hardcore shoot-em-up fans.

I don't fully agree with that. Seems like the developers were looking at GoW in particular when they made Darksiders. It's got the GoW-style simpleish combat, the special god wrath mode, the same chest system, the same winged floating shit, the same press circle to kill shit shit, blah, blah, etc, etc. Then again, I don't know how much of that GoW borrowed to begin with. I've never really enjoyed Japanese action games. Bayonetta was just too much for me to handle. Same with DMC3 when it came out, and the Ninja Gaidens are too fucking hard.

But right, right, scary games... Resident Evil 5 = definitely not scary. What the fuck happened there? That was one of the biggest videogame let-downs for me. RE4 is one of my favorite games, and 5 was essentially a below average 3rd person shooter.

I Love japanese action games. But god of war did borrow heavily from other hack and slash adventure games, and platforming games. You take the combat from any hack and slash game (albeit, maybe a bit more frantic), take the platforming from say Jak 3 (winged section, rotating spike plates etc.) However thats not important. It did do it in a way that felt fresh, and I guess thats where it succeeded.

But yes, Res 4 was one of the greatest game ever. Ususally I move from one game to the next pretty quickly, but with res 4 I finished about everything in that game. I haven't even bothered finishing res 5 yet. But I didn't find resident evil 4 all that scary... then again, zombies (slow walking or fast walking) have never really scared me. Fear gets different people in different ways, and I guess im more drawn and spooked by psychological horrors like silent hill or fatal frame.
