I'm gonna start this out by saying that I am pretty drunk, but I am coherent enough to start this topic; or at least I think I am. If this topic has already been made, please feel free to merge it with the pre-existing topic or delete it by itself.

I have been in a Dio mood lately, not Dio the band itself, but the voice of Dio. I have been listening to Mob Rules, Heaven & Hell, and Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow on constant basis for the last few months. After many listens the lyrical styling of Ronnie James Padlova has a few bits that seem to ruin the song with its cheesy factor.

I have to admit upfront that Ronnie does have a huge cheese factor, but his vocal delivery and the way he sings with passion is usually enough to turn a mediocre song into something listenable (I.E. Lady Evil) but sometimes he has lyrics that ruin a song or a portion of a song for me.

I love Heaven & Hell (I've probably listened to it 3-5 hundred times in the past two months) but when he sings 'You got to bleed for the dancer' it just makes me cringe. I cringe when he first sings it and I cringe again when he sings it after the 'the sun is just the moon at night part". I love the acoustic ending to the song, but usually I just skip to the next song after he sings it a second time.

T.V. Crimes is another bad ass song that just requires additional listening. However, the 'jack and jill went up the hill rhyme' scheme just ruins the song horribly and I cut it off at the end when Dio just repeats the chorus. I know that's not the exact wording, but those who know the song should know what I mean.

So what lyrics of your favorite songs \ bands make you cringe?

(P.S. This is not a thread to bash flower power metal, as the whole vocals and lyrics of that genre are enough to turn a 3-4 minute song into lasting forever)

haha I guess you misinterpreted me, this :" Call me sick but this is what I need " is part of the lyrics, and on a side note I should say it's about two years I dig more brutal death and it became one of my fav genre, but I never take their lyrics theme seriously and actually I don't read them because I don't care about it I enjoy the music.

Hahaha, now I see you're right. Would've been funny if you did say that though.

Basically the only brutal death metal band I listen to is Nile. And their lyrics are pretty bad-ass due to the Epyptian themes and all. And I agree about the lyrics... it's one of the least important aspects about the music. The music itself and vocals are way more important than the lyrics. It's ridiculous to not like a band solely because of its lyrics.

Bloodbath

I've had one desire since I was born
To see my body ripped and torn
To see my flesh devoured before my eyes
I'm here for you I volunteer as a human sacrifice

Carve me up, slice me apart
Suck my guts, lick my heart
Chop me up I like to be hurt
Drink my marrow and blood for dessert
EATEN... My one desire, my only wish is to be--
EATEN... The longer I live the more I'm dying to feel the pain
EATEN... I would do anything to be--
EATEN... My one desire, my only wish is to be--
EATEN...

I finally found you, my personal slaughter
As an appetizer, I let you taste my daughter
Call me sick but this is what I need
My only purpose here is for you to feed

Desecrate me
Tear me limb from limb
Eviscerate me
Chew me to death

I can't get it! What's wrong with this ?

Haha nothing in the slightest it just sends chills through my body when I hear this song.

I just recalled that one from Edguy, in Lavatory Love Machine :

"...In a tight blue dress I close my eyes"

Now the first verse is "then I see a lady...", so it's less gay than it sounds - just lame, and it doesn't get any better -, but I can never get over that first impression.

The lyrics are honestly the worst part of that album. Tony disappointed me big time.

Oh gosh, yes, this song is horrifically cringe worthy.
And I do exactly the same, but there's usually a lot of scrambling about trying to find the remote to the stereo.

I know its traditional to name a metalcore band, but one of the first bands I got into is a metalcore band called All That Remains. I liked them when I first started listening to metal because they were a combination of things (aggressive, sang about romantic shit, and had clean vocals for the chorus so it was easy to listen to for a non-metalhead), but until I overplayed The Fall Of Ideals and This Darkened Heart and realized that the lyrics were pretty cheesy and generic it all sounded good.

Anyway, I bought the album Overcome, and it had this one song that had great riffs, a decent solo, but horrible horrible horrible lyrics. It has an awesome intro, but once the chorus kicks in you think to yourself; what the fuck is this shit. I still like the song, but the chorus is dreadful.

I know that I can stand my head high
Forget not where I fall
Still I find why and reason

Yet that conflict still filling me
Mistrust venom inside of me
I am not the man that you see
Just look inside me

Trust in me the way I trusted you
I know we could have done this together
If you believed in me like I believed in you
My heart would be forever in your hands

How I miss February still
Now that this becomes the moment
Of all our failures

Yet that conflict still filling me
Mistrust venom inside of me
I am not the man that you see
Just look inside me

Trust in me the way I trusted you
I know we could have done this together
If you believed in me like I believed in you
My heart would be forever in your hands

Trust in me the way I trusted you
I know we could have done this together
If you believed in me like I believed in you
My heart would be forever in your hands

Forever in your hands

Deicide and anything by a black metal artist. I love the music but I'm just not into the satanic thing at all.

Damnnnn this topic thread has overthrown and debunk all my faith and love for metal especially Marcel when all ppl feel metal lyrics are not good at all. No, pop, rap, electronic, others are worse. I disagree if you are con metal lyrics. At least metal lyrics is unique and daring to be enough best standing alone among all music.

I so agree with you. I think this stupid "I hate Jesus" thing was so done to death even back in the mid 90's. Satanism I find just stupid, artificial and juvenile, the reason this shit exists is mostly just to annoy Christians anyway. Actual satanic shit I think (and know) is mostly just theatrics. When you actually go and talk with these people I can guarantee you they'll immediately cave in and start explaining how they're really not into that kind of things and stuff. It's pathetic. Then why not just stop fooling around and make songs about things you actually believe in?

Satanism on black metal is bs and all, but hey... Don't forget that these are like only 10% of the bands. Don't blame an entire genre for the mistake of few.

Yes, I know. There are also bands that make songs about horror, mysticism and fantasy, etc. stuff that can actually mean or say something. Those are ok.

Manowar has such an incredibly fine line between cringe and joy, and which side it falls on depends on your mood and how serious you are feeling at that particular moment.

Nothing against Power metal personally, but most of the bands in it are cringe-y except BG and Helloween. Kamelot for the majority of part has cringe-y lyrics as well.

I embrace the cringe- it is baked in with the genre in many ways. Helloween definitely embraces it... I love Dr. Stein.

I don't think so or may be I'm a fan of BG and Helloween because I couldn't find anything that was been ripped off. Totally original and captivating.

I don't want to sound older than I am, but ...
Honestly most of them . I love metal and it did not bother me that lyrics were , and are mostly stupid (no sorry , lets say cringy) for long time . But lately, i must say, my tolerance for trade marked death metal lyrics became really low. Good thing i cant usually discern the actual words in growls at all. I dont wanna even know ... It used to not bother me at all , and now im channeling Clint Eastwood grinch Im afraid. Gore and usual metal lyrics stuff is just not that funny anymore. I applaud artist that at least try to write a good lyrics. They are out there . Remember how refreshing it felt to hear Hammerheart after Eaten back to life album? Probably sounds heretical on metal site but eh.. Maybe that's why I started to prefer classical music lately . They just play and not sing or talk . Also my tolerance for playing the music loud went way down.
That reminds me , i should check my blood pressure and make appointment for colonoscopy...

I tend to understand this more and more (scary). I also started diving into instrumental, jazz and classical mainly because of that.

It's not just the lyrics, though they are a big part of it, it's also that I don't care as much anymore for vocals in general (clean or not). I will say that I am happy though when a band pulls off both great music and lyrics.

So huh... Got a good doctor?

...it's also that I don't care as much anymore for vocals in general (clean or not).

Can you tell why or what changed?

(For my ears, songs range from "showcasing the voice and/or personality of the singer" to "voice being just one of many instruments". A voice I don't like can ruin a song for me, or make a cheesy song good (the Dio examples in the OP are spot-on), and I am more sensitive to the tonal quality of the voice than e.g. the drumming. Possibly because I have not paid as much attention to the latter. .... Just as movement will attract one's gaze - and I find myself staring at a muted TV in the corner of a room, because of that - it seems that vocals attract my listening attention more than the other instruments, and also that the voice serves as marker or indicator what the song is about (angry, wistful, whatever). It is possible for me to hear a song with the vocals as just one of the instruments, but in some cases it takes more conscious effort.)

I know a lot of metal lyrics theme are not attractive. But the first cause of metal like rap is music with lyrics as being tough, strong, weeds out the weak..does that stuff not attracts you ?
