Re-watching Black Swan, it's better than I remember.

It is, yeah. Watched it recently myself, for a second time. It's a shame and a bit strange that Portman hasn't really appeared in very worthwhile roles since then (or, really, before that).

Watched A Room with a View myself. I don't mind period drama and neither am I a diehard fan in general. I thought this was a funny film and although the plot was pretty standard fare, the performances really good. Young Helena Bonham-Carter, the always-perfect Daniel Day-Lewis, and younger Maggie Smith, Judi Dench and Simon Callow.

During the holidays, I saw (among others) The Third Man. I usually find film-noir classics just okay, but this was a surprise. Probably the best I've seen, certainly better than the big Bogart films and probably better than Hitchcock (I'd have to re-watch Vertigo etc. to be sure though).

Primer
...
At first I fucking hated it. The dialogue is too fast to pay attention to all the characters and events going on. I never had any idea what was happening. I did not get anything about the movie until I watched a video on movie. It wasn't necessarily the time travel that confused me, but if I could pay attention to what they were saying it would all make sense. I like fast paced and confusing things like Fight Club, and my favorite director is David Lynch, so of course I like analyzing and thinking about movies and all forms of art, and I would have loved to with this, but again, the dialogue of the film made it too hard to follow.

^ Unlike Lynch et al though Primer isn't about art, it's purely about science, being a hard sci-fi film. I don't really recall any issues with the dialogue but it's not a film that's meant to be easy to follow, rather it tries to be as realistic as one can be regarding time travel.

My mostly uncultured films wot I did like in 2017:

Blade Runner 2049 - The plot might be a bit simplistic and predictable, and Ryan Gosling might be the most boring actor to ever grace the screen, but I can't help but love this film. Probably the best looking movie I've ever seen.
Mother! - One of the weirdest and most breathlessly intense films I've seen in a while.
Killing Of A Sacred Deer - I can't get enough of Yorgos Lanthimos' weird, not-quite-this-reality style. Great, unusual horror.
Creep 2 - The Creep films are probably the best found-footage horrors of recent times, and this one tops the first. Mark Duplas is just awesome.
Get Out - Really edge of your seat, brain-wracking stuff.
It Comes At Night - Really interesting paranoia-horror with some clever use of aspect-ratio to convey claustrophobia.
Okja - Nearly made me go vegan.
A Cure For Wellness - Not a great film necessarily, but I loved the Shutter Island homage, and silly ending. The cinematography is unbelievably pretty too.
The Void - Super-weird, cult-driven throwback horror. Messy as heck, but I loved it.
Split - Great return for Shyamalanamanalam. Then again I appreciate most of his films for their B-Movie qualities. Also Anya Taylor-Joy, mmmm.....
War For The Planet Of The Apes - Blockbuster guff it might be, and not as good as the second, but the Apes-films are probably the most well done, entertaining mainstream modern trilogy.
That Star Wars film - Stop trying to be cool and just enjoy it for the space-opera awesomeness that it is.

Haven't seen The Shape of Water yet but I suspect I'll like it.

I didn't mean the movie was like Lynch's work, I meant the fact that I like to analyze Lynch films and think about them for days and days after I watch them is similar to how I felt about Primer, because it takes a lot of thought to understand the science behind it. Great 2017 list of movies, I felt the same about most of them.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri

I've been a Martin McDonagh fan since In Bruges and 10 years later I'm just happy he's making movies, however long it takes him.

The Shape Of Water

Disappointing. In trying to be otherworldly, it just ends up feeling cartoony. The visuals, the world, and the look of the creature were all great, but the story, dialogue, and characters around it were lacking. I think now I've been burned enough on Del Toro films to never bother with them again.

I caught From Dusk Till Dawn 3: The Hangman's Daughter on TV last night...
I watched it and saw Bryan Cranston and was like
"Boy, this is a treat! Got Bryan Cranston in it."
I was also thinking to myself
"What's Bryan Cranston doing in a B movie like this?"
Surmising that
"He must want to make that break from TV to movie..."

Then afterwards, thanks to the internet, I found out that that wasn't Bryan Cranston.

Can you guys recommend me some movies with overly intelligent characters?
By characterS I mean it in plural and not only one main character which happens to be more intelligent than everyone else like Sherlock Holmes for instance. I'd like to see some worthy mind battles and not one sided, if that makes any sense.

Anything on that line?

I actually found the Vito backstory completely boring and kept wishing they'd go back to Michael's story every time the film went into the past.

True, hated all of it and it wasn't a really good performance at all from de Niro, I figure his performance is worthwhile only when he works with Scorsese. The best moments of Godfather 2 are only the ones with Al Pacino and he was brilliant in it.

Saw both The Godfather and The Godfather part II finally. I have today I prefer the first one, and I wasn't expecting myself to.

I prefer the sequel heavily, nothing more in the first other than to watch Brando's performance, the marriage scenes were overlong, Pacino's character didn't have great scope and the whole movie is just dry drama and the pacing wasn't very good either.

Fight Club

Not what I was expecting at all, but it was great. A lot deeper movie than it seems at first look. I didn't really see the twist coming, but I had an idea (I won't spoil it, though).

That and The Big Lebowski are to me more than just movies and the exemplary cult film which demand nothing but the ardent worship.

Not seen City Of God? I simply feel I need to throw a recommendation for that one as well. A masterpiece from start to finish, with Tarantinoesque storytelling and one of the most disturbingly evil villains of all time.

Just finished The Last Jedi and it was kinda good tbh. I went in expecting to hate it (and did so for the first half) but the second half was really surprising and had bold choices for a blockbuster of its level, now I understand why many SW purists hate it but thats exactly why I like it.

Duck Soup

Fucking hilarious, funniest movie I have ever seen, and that might be saying something.

A Few Good Men

The definition of an average movie. Not the worst, but certainly not close to the best.

Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back

The first movie in the View Askewniverse series for me (I know, not the best place to start). It had some really funny moments actually, especially in the first half.

Sin City - one of idiotic film ever made, what I have seen in my life, just garbadge crap every JCVD and Steven S movie are enjoyable as that crapy shit

Karate Kid remake, J Chan
Nice one, how we treat people.

Asssuan Connection - ice movie, Segal, but it was not he who did the thing, other actors,

The Assignment - Nice movie how bad guys became to bad woman, whit out his permission. Sigourney Weaver not best of her, there could be other actress, she just talked.
