I recently watched "The 12th Man" and it was very very good. Chilling atmosphere in what seems like a total unrealistic survival setting, only to find out it's based off of a true story (which I immediately read up on after). https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3300980/

Ad Astra Man, there was so much to like about this film and it was really close to being great, but somehow it failed. The ideas are interesting and the depiction of a possible future mankind is actually one of the best I've ever seen on film. Even the story overall is great, but it takes some turns it shouldn't and some characters make stupid decisions that feel out of place, making some scenes fall completely flat. There's one scene at the end that just didn't match with the build-up towards it. It felt awkward and rushed. Brad Pitt's performance was top notch as always and the presentation/cinematography was amazing. There are so many positives but in the end the few negatives kind of ruined it for me. Maybe I will like it better on a second viewing now that I know what to expect.

02.03.2020 - 09:49 Written by Zap on 15.12.2019 at 12:47 Man does that echo a lot of what I feel about this movie, but I still loved it nonetheless. It also feels like it would've worked better if it didn't follow a decade full of sad cosmonaut movies like Moon, Interstellar, The Martian, Gravity and First Man, so if it didn't seem like "another one of those", it probably wouldn't be as overlooked as it is now. So glad that it at least got nominated for what it was best at, but I wish Brad's performance got more attention too. Also definitely a movie that works a lot better in cinema due to the cinematography and sound design, couldn't imagine watching it at home.

A lot of movies that had releases in 2019 are only recently coming to Romania in cinema (1917 and Little Women for example). So the only 2020 movie that I did watch was Emma. It's an adaptation of the Jane Austen novel, with the girl from The VVitch in lead. It was pretty cool but not exactly essential unless you're into the Austen type of aristocrat women drama that doesn't feel too consequential. Set and color design, performances and cinematography was pretty great even if I wasn't too invested in the plot, so it was still worthwhile.

The Perks Of Being A Wallflower (2012) What an absolutely amazing and lovely and sad and beautiful film. 9.5/10, can't recommend it highly enough. I'm a sucker for such films though... not that there are many that compare.

08.06.2020 - 15:23 Written by RaduP on 02.03.2020 at 09:55 I'm not a huge Austen fan (my wife is, though), and I've only seen a handful of film adaptations and read just Emma, P&P and Persuasion, so take this with a grain of salt, but: I recommend the 2009 BBC miniseries Emma, with Romola Garai in the lead role. She's exactly how I imagine Emma, by far my favorite Austen heroine, with her breezy self-assurance and naive hubris. That, and Clueless! Some Austen versions play up the romance and the romanticism of pictoresque country life. Too much historical fiction, with emphasis on dress and scenery. Austen didn't write historical fiction, she wrote contemporary satire, and the setting of her books is just what her setting happened to be. So I think the best versions capture the lightness of banter, the sharp tongues and comical characters. I'm not convinced there really is a true romance in her works, they all feel like teetering on the edge of irony (though maybe that's just because her idea about love really is different to ours and that's why it seems so comical in its professed depth but apparent reservation - either way makes for funny reading).

Come And See (1985) Brilliant film, one of the best of its style. They also kill real animals. Seven Samurai (1954) Very good film even tho it's a little bit dated. Still, there's a lot to enjoy here.

Schindler's List (1993) Still Spielberg's crowning achievement in my opinion, 10/10 and my highest recommendation, if there's even anyone out there who has yet to see it. I do think the film has one problem - just one - but I can't discuss it without getting into spoilers, soooo.... yeah. An important film, a great film, a timeless film.

1917 Brilliant film. The performances are really good, the music is fantastic, the cinematography and production design are out of this world. Some have complained that the film fails to pull on the heartstrings, but I certainly got misty-eyed at the end. All the little things that make up a film are either good, great or totally next level in 1917 and combined make it a masterpiece. I will definitely be watching this one again very soon.

08.07.2020 - 10:15 Written by Cynic Metalhead on 08.07.2020 at 07:57 Out of the other two "one-shot" movies, those being Rope and Birdman, I think I like 1917 the least, but it's still a movie you definitely have to see. Stunning cinematic achievement even if the story itself may not be anything to write home about, but it still made me fairly involved.

Caught up on some great films recently: Léon Morin, prêtre (1961): Jean-Pierre Melville film starring Emmanuelle Riva and Jean-Paul Belmondo. Atheist woman starts meeting up with a priest during the Occupation and begins to convert. A wonderfully acted depiction of interesting characters and a very multidimensional, non-preachy depication of the various parties (communists, jews, collaborators, Germans, Americans, and just everyday people). It may have reached its climax too soon and dragged on a bit, but almost a flawless film. Amarcord (1973): Not my favorite Fellini, but still a great film in the tradition of warm/sentimental/ironic depictions of life in small Italian communities (no doubt Cinema Paradiso was paying homage, and it's a lot like some Ettore Scola). Not much of a story here, just scenes and anecdotes from local life, but it is of course a cinematic treat. Also saw Columbus (2017), set in the city in Indiana. It's about architecture, longing, being stuck in a small town and not knowing what to do with your life, and it's pretty much as artsy as it sounds. There's some fascinating architecture (Finnish!) and it's visually one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. There's a quiet, wistful, lingering atmosphere that makes time stand still as you watch. If you liked Sorrentino's Le Grande Bellezza, for instance, you'll like this.
