Won't have time to review, but some emotionally gripping (if slightly typical) black-tinged post-metal that I'm enjoying quite a bit

New side project of Botanist guy.
So far there's only 1 song available. I like the instrumentals, also that there are "avant garde metal" and "black metal" tags, but so far there's no metal here. Here's hoping the other songs will have it.

Bolt Thrower-esque riffs with a lady doing killer vocals. One of the best death metal albums of the year. A debut, nonetheless.

Heavy but pretty, occasionally almost funeral, death doom.

Found this through it getting Album of the Month in May on AMG and it's a cool pick, does the Aztec/Mesoamerican extreme metal thing that quite a few bands and albums have dabbled within the past decade, and I think it's one of the more compelling interpretations of it

Monkey On Mars - a Waste Of Space Orchestra-style combination of all of Monkey3 and Mars Red Sky that's a bit more metallic than I remember either of those bands being individually. Just 2 songs on this EP, but both long oness

Good surprise from Bandcamp Metal Recommendations in September. Mixing American country music with Drone/Doom creates such a unique story-telling vibe.

Probably won't find time to review this, but really interesting post-black sound with other elements in; some obvious screamo influence in areas, and other sections that are more theatrical. Reminds me a bit of Lotus Thief in the more subdued passages

I quite like the second A Void Named Life album, old-school melodic death-doom in the spirit of Katatonia/October Tide:

"After completing the final objective and rising from the ashes of the recently self-immolated GRIDLINK, Takafumi Matsubara and Bryan Fajardo now set mission coordinates towards BARREN PATH."

Features session musicians from Coronet Juniper and the Shock Withdrawal vocalist, one of the better grind releases in a weaker year for the genre (at least of what I've come across)

Really dig the sound of this - stylistically it is probably best described as drone doom, as it has very slow sustained chord riffs, but tonally it has kinship with the ethereal metalgaze sound

Bombastic symph-tinged prog/tech-death - a bit like Obscura going in a Lorna Shore direction. Enjoyed listening to it yesterday

Haven't got around to transferring my 2025 list to MS yet, so here are a few albums that have gone a bit under the rader on MS:

Professor Emeritus - A Land Long Gone: probably the year's best epic doom album


Behölder - In the Temple of the Tyrant: solid epic doom about D&D; what's not to love


Black Sword Thunder Attack: Greek heavy/power metal band took over 20 years to release their debut LP, and it rocks in just the right old school epic way


Starmony - Slumbering Sun: proggy trad doom that, thanks to the vocal style and melodies, almost reminds me of a groovier Warning at times.

These aussie guys are an unsigned atmo black metal band. Check them out. Pretty good stuff.

Late in the year comes this '70s-sounding, wonderful hard rock/prog rock debut. Love at first listen.

These guys have blown up surprisingly - I heard the album when it came out and thought of it as good Amenra worship, but they got booked as late replacements to two major UK festivals I went to this year (ArcTanGent and Damnation), and had large crowds at both. I asked an 'in the know' friend, and apparently on the podcast that the organizers of those two festivals run, one of them shouted out the band, which seems as reasonable a catalyst as any for them getting such sizeable crowds so quickly.

I don't begrudge them it, it's a solid album for sure, just an example of how shout outs from or connections with the right people can really help an early-career band!

Just found this is an EOY roundup list and am enjoying it, has post-rock/metal elements to it, but also an alternative rock/metal edge, perhaps a bit like Spotlights but far more convincing.

Goddaaamn.
