One of the most influential rock bands that have ever existed, in my opinion!

Until their first album, The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, led by Syd Barrett.
From there on having David Gilmour on the guitar, together with Roger Waters composing the music for Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here and Animals.
Roger Waters composed The Wall and The Final Cut almost completely by himself. And after that he left the band.
Pink Floyd produced 2 more albums after The Final Cut.

They have performed recently on the Live8 festival, and they're touring again. Unfortunately, I'm not going to see them here in Holland. I don't know if Roger Waters is touring with them now or if it's just him and other band members.

I wonder what you all think of this band. What album you like best and what period you prefer (With Syd or with Roger Waters)?

But wether you like this band or not, they truly have had a damn lot of influence on the music of today.

Why always everyone forget to mention "Atom Heart Mother" album?

Probably because it's an experimental piece of shit that hardly even qualifies as music.

BTW, there were several albums before Dark Side: Piper at the Gates of Dawn, A Saucerful of Secrets, Obscured by Clouds, More, Meddle, Umma Gumma, the Live at Pompeii recording, Atom Heart Mother (as you mentioned), and several singles prior even to Piper.

If you have (or can get a copy of) More (which is actually a soundtrack), take a listen to The Nile Song. It is extremely heavy for the time and, IMO, has all the elements of early metal. And this recording actually pre-dates any releases from Deep Purple of Black Sabbath.

Sorry to bring such sad sad news - Richard Wright of Pink Floyd lost the battle with cancer and died at age 65. (I didn't even know he was sick). I'm speechless and extremely sad.

Pink Floyd is a timeless band that I can enjoy no matter what. They were one of the first bands to work almost completely off of atmosphere (they were still great musicians though). One of the things I would have loved to experience was the tour for The Wall were as they played a wall was built in front of them and they were slowly blocked of from the audience. Just a great great band for me.

That's what he did a couple years ago with The Dark Side Of The Moon, which was the best show I've seen in my life. Hopefully, he can come again. I wanna see a giant pig flying, watch all the lights, effects and fire cannons again.

Pink Floyd are a glorious band. I think it's weird that they're not featured on metalstorm, even The Doors are on this site! I think there are more metal fans that like Pink Floyd than that they like the Doors (I like 'em though ).

An absolutely legendary band. I still marvel at how they managed to record so many creative and complex songs without digital technology, Pro Tools and all that other stuff. It's just amazing and not to mention the atmosphere that always manages to stir up something in me. True musicians and artists - a rare breed nowadays.

They're a very overrated band, and they bore me to death most of the time.. i'm 'ok' with two or three PF tracks only, other than that, i wouldnt listen if you pay me to.

so they are not overrated, they are VERY overrated? Why? They don't deserve their fame?

I checked your profile and you listen to a lot of extreme metal, so I understand why you might hate Pink Floyd. I'm ok with that, but I don't see the point why you would call them "boring" or "overrated". I know I'm looking for it, but I just saw red when I read your post. Why the need to complain about something you don't like at all anyway? I dislike extreme metal (with the exception of several thrash bands i still listen to), but i don't bash or complain about disliking death ot black metal.

Excuse my meddling, I just couldn't help it.

I dont 'hate' PF, i just dislike them... just as i dislike every band that is overrated .. and yes i think they are VERY overrated as they certainly didn't come up with something new or 'invent' what has not been invented, nor do they excel in playing their instruments. infact, most pink floyd music is just to create a certain atmosphere or a mood .. but lacks musical technicality, theory, or even consistency.

also, liking extreme metal doesnt mean i dont apreciate less extreme bands... i'm a HUGE fan of classical music ... i like some rap and pop too so, when i list my most favorite bands on my profile that doesnt mean i'm limited to listening to those.. i'm very open minded about music. and pink floyd DO have three or four tracks that i admire.. but i admire them for a reason.. either they have initeresting lyrics .. a nice guitar solo ... some creativity or a new feature i haven't seen before ..etc .. but i wouldnt like ALL their music as it is similar .. just like most death metal sounds the same.. and most black metal sound the same (i do agree with that in advance incase you bash me with that ) .. so, PF are a good band.. but they certainly dont deserve to be worshipped as gods of psychedelic rock (or whatever genre they play) .. just as most extreme metal doesnt deserve to be that famous and well-known (and that is why it isn't) .. so, pink floyd IS overrated -sorry-

I still disagree; I don't know what PF album you have listened to that disappointed you; if there were only their most famous (Dark Side of the Moon, Wish you were here, Wall and Division Bell), then you're missing a lot of things; in the context of their time, their music was inventive and some of it groundbreaking. Their sound back in the day was quite unique. Surely they didn't invent psychedelic rock, but nobody sounded like them, albums like A Saucerful of Secrets, Ummagamma were pretty experimentall and I've always admired them for that (although the studio Ummagamma is over the top). Their albums from Atom Heart Mother to the Wall are pretty different from each other which few bands did. Just look how different WYWH and Animals were or DSOTM and WYWH (that is if you ever give them a second chance).

You say they are not skilled? I disgree again, if you ever listen to the bass work on Animals or guitar work on Echoes, the drumming of Nick Mason back in the day was surprinsingly good (I say he's underrated as a musician) and Richard Wright's keyboards work was always great. I think it's more difficult to create a mood/atmosphere in a song than just display technicality (which if not used right just fall flat and the examples are many).

Watch and Listen to Live in Pompei, you'll see PF at its best.

I agree -to some extent- with you, they have been quite innovative back in the day, and as musicians they were considered excelent compared to musicians their time .. BUT .. the key word here is 'back in the day' .. which means, ok.. if i had lived when all music sucked except PF.. i'd surely love'em.. but right now, there's so much great music that could stand up to PF. maybe that is why i dont think of them as very special ... good.. but nothing -out of this world- ...

and the two albums i listened to are: animals and the wall ... i like two or three tracks from each album

^ Well, to me, 70s Pink Floyd has staying power and I hope people will still listen to them years from now. And to me there's little music that can stand to PF; I guess I'm getting picky as i get older. I've been listening to Floyd for almost 20 years now, I've never got bored with them.

I think albums like ''Obscured by Clouds'' and ''Meddle'' are REALLY underrated. You only hear about ''The Wall'', but those other albums were classic.

Just sit back and listen to the song Fearless and you'll get my drift, man.
