In a nutshell this means that many men who would describe themselves as purely heterosexual willingly and frequently have sex with the same gender, when members of the other gender aren't around or very sparse, often as soon as a few days after they arrived in this 'situation' (examples: prisons, boats, guys-/girls- only schools, monasteries, etc) the amount of people who refrain from such behaviour is relatively small.

The reason i tend to believe the 'homosexuality is caused by the environment' theory is that in my country, most -if not all- homosexuals were straight, and incredibly attracted to the other gender (aka. Super horny), but because of the cultural and religious restrictions on pre-marital sex, and the difficulty in finding a room or just taking your girlfriend to your place (the nosy neighbours would call the cops on u if they saw you, lol) .. so alot of people chose the 'easy' way to have sex and that is homosexuality. same applies to saudi arbia where it hs the largest percentage of homosexuals in the middle east, and it can be linked to that that country's customs require total separation of genders in schools, restaurants, cafes, and even in personal houses (i'm an architect and i was amazed to see the requirements of my Saudi clients, they basically ask for two seperte houses that are linked by a lobby.. one for women's quarters, and one for men.

so, if homosexuality didn't exist outside of the middle east i'd say that the environment is the number one cause to it, and that it can't occur naturally.

Good point... it's like what happens in prison. People will take what they can get. But what defines homosexuality? The action or the desire? I choose to go to work, not because I have an innate motivation to, but out of necessity. Does that mean working on a computer all day occurs naturally?

P.S. By working I mean talking on here xD

I do think Bas does have a point, at least to a certain degree. Not so much for females, because female bisexuality, and even lesbianism in our society is seen as "hot" and "cool". And is more socially accepted. lol I do think there are a lot of self-proclaimed "straight" men who actually are bisexual, but repress that side of themselves and never act on it because of potential negative reactions from society. Some people (men especially ) think there are naturally more bisexual women than men. I don't agree, I think it's purely that men are far more likely to repress that side of themselves than women are.

I have a friend who is gay, and he says that he has never been sexually attracted to women. He did go out with a girl when he was younger, but he said he only did this to please his family and to try and be "normal", not because he was attracted to women. If he says he isn't attracted to women, who am I to say he's wrong, or that it's unnatural behaviour? I do believe that some have a genetic pre-disposition to be gay. That's not to say that all people who identify as gay are born that way, but I think for some at least, nature, rather than envoirenment and nurture is the key factor in them being gay.

Hmmm, ok well, I think you guys view things differently, cuz HERE, they're 2 very different things. Around here, people designate whether they're CHRISTIAN or CATHOLIC. Maybe it's different where you are, but they're 2 different churches/organizations here. I suppose Christianity is also a term used to describe all religions that essentially believe in "God"... but that's my perception... so it's not a case of me "not knowing anything about it"... it's a difference in perceptions. Catholicism is just a branch of Christianity. a subgenre, if you will. i would think a site like this, full of metal nerds, would understand being specific in referencing something. The only supporters of the theory I can think of are the always controversial Freud and Kinsey. Pseudo/pop psychology and questionnaire-based behavioral surveys don't provide the most convincing research. As someone who has studied psychology, do you think there can ever be a truly scientific measurement of sexuality? Or are we bound to our assumptions, beliefs and correlations?

Indeed. I don't think there'll ever be a consensus on the issue. I think that this is such a socially constructed phenomenon that it is impossible to unequivocally explain or "measure" in the same way you would measure the length of a piece of string. I think it is an issue that will be debated forever, or at least certainly in our lifetime.

Actually I've read quite a lot about it from a lot of different sources because I had to write a paper on a closely related subject for school.

Maybe on a Bio-Psychological level...but otherwise no, the only other way [which is incredibly pointless] is through psychometric testing. A Likert scale for instance

Even scanning brain activity wouldn't really tell us much about what a person is thinking when looking at someone else. Attraction is such a subjective thing, it's just impossible to try and roll out some form of test that measures everyone.

Onto the original topic, why is all the drama with saying goodbye needed? I mean srsly, if someone wishes to go, then just go and don't come back. I was just checking out how much of a loser I am, have been here for over 7 years now and I don't even have 3000 posts and there are people saying goodybe all over here that have 10000 posts in a year and whom I don't even know by one post (wel, I do know Ellrohir tho). Dunno is it just me or this farewells should be all nominated for the MS drama in the next MS awards.
