Now the most exciting phase of the Cup has started... the playoffs confrontations

Hopefully my dear Uruguay will reach semi-finals. o/ Sure only possible due to the equilibrated confrontation with USA or Ghana in the Quarter-finals... a final is just beyond Uruguay's capacity, but reach the semi-finals and possibly a 3rd place would be a nice revival of the consecrated past

Congrats, Dutch Metalstormers! I was too lazy to watch the match but at least, I saw all goals on it. I'm sure that the Dutch team played well but still... wasn't it a case of very good luck that a Brazilian player made his own goal?

As for the other game (which I did watch, even though I didn't watch the whole of it from the very beginning) , it was soo nerve-wrecking! My eyes kept watching with great interest till Uruguay's last shot. To be completely honest with you, I'd have been very happy if Ghana had made it to the semi-final. That would have been a big sensation! However, they did their best and I admire the way they played.

My visions for the final match are now completely mixed up because I was expecting it to feature Argentina and Brazil. What about The Netherlands vs. Germany on the final? I don't have high expectations for Uruguay but Argentina do pretty well nowadays. So, we shall see...

2Bad_English: if you mean Japan vs. Paraguay match, that was boooring as hell compared to yesterday...one thing are penalties, second thing 120 minutes of boring football compared to 120 minutes of thrilling football with absolutely unbelievable ending

I saw in news hand and red was awesome, I wish I can see it

This WC would probably turn out better for South Americans if Brazil had beaten Holland. The other three do not have much condition to go further...

Youre right about Uruguay, as much effort as they put, the team have three serious problems: Diego Lugano injured, Fucile with a second yellow card, and Suárez who sacrificed to save Ghana's goal... With the complete squad it would already be close to impossible to win the Dutchs... now it is impossible...

Argentina, well... after watch this 1st half against Germany... is completly lost and just as emotionally out of control as Brazil...

And Paraguay already went too far for their own good.

The goal has been awarded to Sneijder now. So it wasn't an own goal
Btw that goal was the fault of the keeper. How the hell could he not catch it?

Mick Jagger you damn jinx...

Amazing second half of Spain and Paraguay... the lost penalties had errors for both sides: - When Cardozo shot and Casillas defend there were two Spanish players in the area, the penalty should be repeated. - When Alonso lost his penalty, Fabregas was overthrown by the goal-keeper when attempt to take the rebound.

But it was good that both missed it, the game became more interesting

Damn, Uruguay keeps the South America flag for the semifinals ahhahh. anyway the penalty after the penalty was clear as fuck. but it doesn't really matter, Spain is through, Paraguay is on the same plane flying back home

so Uruguay - Netherlands and Germany - Spain..

my guess is Uruguay - Netherlands 0:2

and Germany - Spain 2:1

and then probably Germany will win the cup, they're my best bet right now.

At least Spain will now certainly equal their best performance ata World Cup ever, which is fourth plac ein 1950.
So,it is two teams who have been world champions before. Albeit Uruagauy most recent top 4 placing was in 1970 (4th)
And two who have never been champions.
Spain best 1950 4th
Holland best 1974 & 1978 2nd and 1998 4th

@Marcel: Seriously?! No way - that was clearly an own goal of a Brazilian!

Anyway. I watched the whole game Germany vs. Argentina. Poor Argentinians... They seemed to struggle all the time to find their way to the German gate. There was something missing in Argentina's play in their opponents' half of the pitch. Argentinians did have some good attacks but those ones were somehow ruined by German players who were tactically gathered all around. I'd never seen Leo Messi so desperate before! He's much of a disappointment for this whole WC - how come he didn't manage to score at all?! On the one hand, I feel sorry for Argentina, but on the other one, I am happy for Germany because they totally deserved to win that match. Of course, many factors are the reason for today's triumph of Germany - young and well-trained players, a very experienced goalkeeper, great discipline and perfect strategies. (Here, I have to agree with K7.) I'd also like to point out that it was damn clever of Germans to make Argentinians fall into offside during one of the penalties. I personally can't think of a match I've watched where such a situation has appeared. Pretty clever, indeed... (Too bad none of the teams managed to take advantage of those penalties.)

Another thing I'd like to mention is the fact that all in all, Argentina had a bigger possession during (nearly) the whole game. It's unbelievable how tricky such statistics could be. Germans used their counterattacks impressively well and gained success, whereas Argentinians, who did possess the ball more often, couldn't score a single goal. The same thing happened during some other matches of that WC.

Results of the next game of the day, Spain vs. Paraguay, weren't that hard for me to predict. I always support the Spanish guys during European- and Worldchampionships and I was pretty sure they would win. This year, I only watched one or two games of their and I'm terribly sorry for this. There was usually something else I had to do instead of watching Spain's matches. However, today was an exception. I didn't watch the first half, though and I guess I haven't missed anything. The second one was definitely better. There was no way Spain wouldn't have scored after so many attempts.

Player of the first match: I'm not that sure who must that one be, but I guess the "prise" goes for either Oezil or Neuer. (Bastian Schweinsteiger has actually been elected for Man of The Match but I kinda disagree with that. It's my opinion, of course.)

Player of the second match: That must be Iker Casillas who did an incredible job!

Yes, seriously. Although I agree it was clearly an own goal. But the ball would have sailed into the goal even if Melo hadn't touched it.
