The year is 1990, and the 80's thrash scene will soon fade into the backdrop. There seems to be no hope for this genre beyond but a few bands, but only one of these bands was needed; Megadeth. Since the last album, Dave have ousted Chuck Behler and Jeff Young, and replaced them with Nick Menza and Guitar Giant Marty Friedman. With Political and Societal themes ready to launch, Megadeth was ready to make their fans Rust in Peace.

1990 is a year to be remembered in the history of heavy metal. And it has to be said that the US Megadeth have made a lot for it with the launch of their cataclysmic opus, Rust In Peace. After three albums of good quality the four guys decided to release a (nuclear) bomb that has become a landmark in the metal world.
Dave Mustaine publicly reveals his genius, accompanied by his old mate Dave Ellefson. For this album, Mustaine has hired a new guitarist, Marty Friedman, and a drummer, Nick Menza. The first impression when you hear this album, is its pure, almost uncontrolled strength, that changes every riff into an earthquake. The guitars are omnipresent, they rhythm, without any moment of weakness, the lyrics, resolutely anti military and full of nuclear apocalypse. In this point of view, the excellent ?Holy wars? is a titanic opening. This track can be considered as a symbol of all the rage and determination that the album contains, as it combines heavy repeating riffs and guitar flights. This only track can justify the purchase of this album. Because it's a boost that allows the other tracks to be linked together with a great fluidity.

Mind-blowing Thrasher / Classic Banger
Sep 24, 2020
Exactly 30 years ago, on September 24th, Rust In Peace was unleashed upon the world and had the impact of an atomic bomb. Just before thrash metal's demise, Megadeth released a magnificent masterpiece that was at the same time so aggressive yet dexterous, so catchy yet progressive, so melodic yet gritty, that it would be considered groundbreaking even if it was released today. Alongside the two Daves, Rust in Peace was the first Megadeth album to feature lead guitarist Marty Friedman and the late Nick Menza on drums, thus undoubtedly forming the most talented line-up the band ever had. Titles like "Holy Wars... The Punishment Due", "Hangar 18", and "Tornado Of Souls" are carved with golden letters on the Book of Thrash's Legendary Tracks. To be consumed incessantly and irresponsibly until nuclear warfare wipes us off the face of this planet.

obvious that you love thrash metal more than metal in general

Yes, Sahar only cares about thrash metal, and nothing else in metal! He hates innovation, only raw, old-school thrash. Yup, that's the Sahar I know. Definitely. Totally.

No need for sarcasm, a newbie will not understand what you're trying to say.

Sorry, was just too funny to ignore

Yeah, but you're mocking a newbie that does not know anyone here on MS.

The album is not overrated, is obvious that you love thrash metal more than metal in general and I can see why you don't appreciate RIP as a whole

I’m partial to black metal, doom, drone, and industrial far more so than thrash, actually, but OK.

Anywho, my margin of error for RIP vs the other two I mentioned is slim anyway. For me, I’d say RIP gets a 9, KIMB a 9.5. Peace Sells is an easy 10.

"I Ain't Superstitious" is the only thing that brings Peace Sells down for me as a whole. I often say that Rust In Peace is the best album ever, but Peace Sells is the best Megadeth album ever -- if that makes sense, lol.

Technically brilliant where especially some solos are truly facemelting. I would like to give it higher rating since both Hangar 18 and Tornado of Souls are out of this world. Hangar 18 might be my favourite Megadeth track, the set of solos always impress me along with the catchy riffs. At the same time there's some songs that don't do that much for me like Lucretia, Five Magics and Dawn Patrol.

Pretty much in the same boat as you. Five Magics is truly an awful song.

Five Magics is one of the best songs on the album. That bass intro alone is better than a lot of the stuff on here. If there’s any bad ones it’s either Lucretia or Take No Prisoners (Everyone likes this for some reason but gawd it’s classic cringetastic Dave lyrics that sounds like it would’ve come off an album like United Abominations instead).

I quite like "Five Magics" tbh, for me the weakest track on the album is "Take No Prisoners", and even that's a reasonably good song. "Holy Wars" has always been my favorite ever Megadeth song, but "Hangar 18", "Tornado Of Souls", and "Rust In Peace...Polaris" all aren't far behind that, they're all time thrash metal classics imo.

I can join the pro-Five Magics train, that bassline during the first phase is dope as hell, and I dig what it subsequently transitions into as well. Excluding Dawn Patrol (which isn't really a proper song), the weakest here for me are also Lucretia and Take No Prisoners like Mönkey said, but both are still fine songs

Agreed. The riffs are pretty insane, but the song as a whole is not that great.

What more can be said? This album is the absolute pinnacle of thrash, and arguably metal as whole.

I was lucky to see the 25th anniversary show for this album. They played it cover to cover w/o commentary between songs. Ranks pretty high in my favorite concert list...

The only time I saw Aerosmith was Wembley Arena 1989 on the Pump tour. Needed to look it up, but The Quireboys supported.

An amazing album that is dragged through the mud by a horrible vocal performance. Dave Mustaine is probably one of the worst metal vocalists of all time, fight me.

Every song on this record is superb! There is so much variety here. The technical skills are on the highest level but still it´s very catchy at the same time.

Faves: Holy Wars, Hangar 18, Take no Prisoners, Tornado of Souls and the title track.

Top 100 album!

Best Megadeth album.

Honestly, not even the vocals bother me. This is unforgettable. Not my favorite album, but It's totally deserving of being tied for highest rated album on this website. 1990 must have been a good year for metal.

Just discovered these videos... "Megadeth but every instrument is my voice"
Gotta admit, I respect the effort and commitment to record every track and mixing it all together. The result is hilarious and very relatable (this is pretty much how I sing these songs to myself anyway )

There seem to be way more videos out there, but I thought I'd share these classics right here. Enjoy!

Okay, I think I should write a review for this album. I've always thought this album came from outer space; it's not from Earth at all. However, Megadeth has never been able to create anything even remotely similar since. Ethereal, ethereal, and dashing are my complete descriptions. Marty Friedman is undoubtedly the biggest contributor to this album. Megadeth, of course, ultimately failed to create music that was truly faster and heavier than Metallica. But that doesn't matter, because I never appreciate this album from a traditional metal music perspective, and it doesn't need so-called weight to achieve what it should have.

You couldn't be more right, he is indeed an unqualified singer. But his voice is surprisingly suitable for this album, and I can't think of any other lead singer who could have made this album feel so unique.
Of course, apart from this album, I think his singing in most of his other albums is the one that drags the album down.

For the life of me, I do not understand the appeal of Megadeth.

Looking at your favourites I think, its a possibility, that you might not be into Thrash Metal... Like at all. So yeah, that might be your issue. Not that its actually an issue really. You don't have to be, nor does Megadeth need to appeal to you.

I'll just say that 6 is a bit on the low side for this album, most tracks here are thrash classics and when this album came out it pushed what thrash could be and had such a huge impact on the metal scene that 6 just sounds crazy to me. That's the case even if you're not a fan of the vocals. 1990 was such a crazy year for metal, especially when it comes to the technicality of the sound and this album is just a part of that evolution.

But its your take and that's alright.

I'm definitely not big on Thrash although I enjoy all of Metallica's early albums (and the newest ones). I think it's mainly about Mustaine's face and personality.
