Top 400 Metal Albums Ranked Mathematically (2026 Update)
RESTRICTIONS
Each album had to meet all the following conditions in order to be eligible:
1) 10+ years old
2) Metalstorm: 200+ votes, average user score 8.0+
3) Rateyourmusic: 1000+ ratings, average user score 3.50+
4) Sputnikmusic: 100+ votes, average user score 3.8+
HOW ALBUMS WERE RANKED
Each album was given an Overall Mean (OM) by averaging the average user scores on metalstorm, metal-archives, rateyourmusic, and sputnikmusic.
METAL-ARCHIVES
Metal-archives operates differently from the other 3 sites since users there have to submit a written review (and get it approved) in order for their score to be shown for an album. So metal-archives does not have as many scores to pull from. Additionally, not all "metal" bands are listed on metal-archives.
Therefore:
1) If a band was not listed on metal-archives then their albums' OMs were calculated WITHOUT considering metal-archives.
2) If an album had at least 10 user reviews then the average shown on metal-archives was used directly to calculate the OM.
3) If an album had less than 10 user reviews then the average shown on metal-archives was converted to a new score by calculating the Bayesian average (more info in comments).
