"Beyond The Veil" is the second full-length album by the Norwegian act Tristania. It was released in 1999 and so far this is claimed to be their best release and righteously so. In this album the symphonic Gothic style is most perfectly defined and highlights every track on this release with heavy and dark beauty. Even better, one never gets the feeling of clichés or beauty vs beast influences while listening to "Beyond The Veil". Pure quality music only... plus undressed girls on the cover are always nice to see.

Among my fav albums ever.

Too bad the duet Veland/Moen stopped working together after this album. Those two made a really unique style.
And Vibeke's angelical voice... I surely miss that.

Such a dirty yet beautiful album at the same time, masterpiece, yessir.

This album is absolutely stunning! One of the best albums not only in Gothic, but metal in general, it is a true beauty and the beast masterpiece, with Vibeke who has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever listened to, backed with stunning symphonic music, beautifully crafted melodies, and amazing growls.

it's 's so sad that Morten left the band shortly after this epic masterpiece! This and the debut will go down as his greatest two albums, Tristania were never the same in his absence, Sirenia turned out good, but were no Tristania.

I decided to try to go through all top 200 albums and this is the first with place no. 200.

I was not familiar with the band. I expected pretty straight forward symphonic metal with some gothic vibes but instead I think the sound was more of gothic melodeath with some symphonic and atmospheric elements. I didn't expect growls but it was a welcome surprise.

First song to standout was Opus Relinque with a bit weird intro. Song has quite cool mystic sound although woman moans were awkward. Fortunately those didn't last long. I'm not fan of the female vocals. They're not bad but I don't think they fit too well with the music. Especially on song Angina which is the weakest song on the album in my opinion.

On second listen I got into more songs like Beyond The Veil, Lethean River and Heretique. Instrumental songs were not that special though. In the end, I like the album. There is quite many interesting and unusual sounds and rhythms. Pretty proggy at times too. Some songs went to one of my playlists and I might give band's debut a listen later.

Yeah, this was before symphonic metal became symphonic metal.
Dont miss out on their debut, I like it even more than this great album.

Edit: Plus also the s/t EP by the way

I didn't notice the EP. I'll put it on my ''to listen'' list too since it's always interesting to hear where bands have started. Thanks for the info!
