Blizzard Of Ozz is a significant album in the history of heavy metal. Released in 1980, this was the first solo album for Ozzy Osbourne, who had previously been the lead singer of Black Sabbath, the band often credited with creating the distinctive sound of heavy metal music in the early 1970s. The high regard for this album is obvious by its rating on this site - at the time of writing this review it ranks as #147 on the Top 200 albums of all time and #4 on the Top 20 albums of 1980 - surprising then that this is the first review for this landmark release.

I wouldn't want to crowd the main page with three anniversary staff picks, but Lee Kerslake's passing just one day shy of this album's 40th anniversary led me to realize how much Ozzy Osbourne struck gold with the lineup of this album. Kickstarting a career that would lead him from metal pioneer to Prince Of Darkness, Blizzard Of Ozz not only has some of the best songs of his career (but some questionable ones too), but also some of the best musicians: Randy Rhoads just a few years before his untimely passing, Don Airey, Bob Daisley, and, though his Uriah Heep career might be the more interesting of the bunch, there's no denying how much Lee Kerslake's drumming elevates this album as well.

That said, what the hell is a "bone movie"?

Ozzy's first two albums blow away the rest of his solo work.

Insanely overrated in my opinion. Goodbye to Romance is embarassingly bad, the only solid part of this album is the opening riff to Suicide Solution. Other than that, blah.

I agree with the "Ozzy's first two albums blow away the rest of his solo work" comment.
The rest just don't compare to this/these.
Besides the songs played heavily on the radio back then, I love Steal Away.

I'll third that remark. First two solo albums are the business. The others are good but not exceptional like the first two.

I'm going for a fifth and a half. I slightly agree that these two are infinitely better than the rest of his solo career, but I'll always have a love for No More Tears.

His solo work never compared to the early Sabbath albums but this is still a classic nonetheless. Brilliant guitar playing from Rhoads with some face melting solos. Very simple songs with nice melodies and catchy riffs; what's not to like. I'd rate it higher if it was just a littttlle heavier sounding.

This is a great debut, Ozzy has shown us over the years, that he is one of the greatest songwriters in metal and rock history, and this album is his best solo work imho. It's full of fantastic riffs, and amazing solo's by the legendary guitarist , Randy Rhodes, the drumming is also great, and it also has some of the best bass work I've ever heard in metal.

There are a few top quality tracks like "Crazy Train", "Suicide Solution", "Don't Know", and "Mr Crowley", but there are a few tracks I never cared much for,
which unfortunately let It down for me a wee bit.

Ozzy a great songwriter? Hardly. He's always surrounded himself with great musicians. Daisley wrote a lot of the lyrics when he was with Ozzy. His guitarists were the main creators.

An extremely important album for the Heavy Metal genre, which provides biggest hits of Ozzy's solo career and continuing to influence generations of guitar players, myself included!

Some truly outstanding songs here and Randy Rhoades was something special, the line-up overall is iconic when thinking about it.. it's a bit of a hit and miss at times but it's most likely the strongest Ozzy record.
