To these we've never heard Symphony X before, listen to this album and you will be a fan... V: The New Mythology Suite is the best of what creativity could bring to standard metal. Loud guitars, clean keyboards, perfect bass lines, permanent technique drums and excellent vocals, what do you want more? Michael Romeo and Michael Pinnella are used to play together and their music sounds as one. V is a wonderful melting pot of angry riffs and angelic melodies where vocals appear as heavenly prophecies. The theme of the album is a little obscure but it seems to be one of those themes about life, destruction and religion, you know, something very spiritual. Nevertheless, you don't have to understand the lyrics to appreciate Symphony X music because it's so good!

Man i love this music... I hate this vocals!!! Completely!

It's one of the best performances by Russell Allen. Take Fallen, Fool's Paradise or Egypt. I hated the vocals on Paradise Lost a lot. Unless u like growling then i see no reason why anyone would think the vocals are bad on V...

Russell Allen sings very well, and has a voice that fits perfectly into Symphony X's music. There's nothing to dislike here. Unless you want growling, which in this band's case would be a ridiculous addition.

Well, the most symphonic and neoclassical (and maybe instrumental) disc from them, and also i would say that they experimented quite with their sound in that time with this record (at least to my ears this album sounds a little experimental comparing it with the rest), previous to the last three masterpieces that were to come. In this album there are awesome songs, really great songs, but on the other hand i find a little more weak the middle of the album (tracks 6,7,8,9) a similar thing that happens to me with the album 'The Divine Wings Of Tragedy' (tracks 5, 6, 7), but in general the record is quite solid.

Highlights:

02. Evolution (The Grand Design)
03. Fallen
05. Communion And The Oracle
11. A Fool's Paradise

I sincerely hope that in 2020 they will do one of those anniversary tours for this album and play it in its entirety. Preferably with a full orchestra. And belly dancers.

Honestly think this album couldn't be any more of a masterpiece if Mozart had written it.

For some reason it took a long time to get into this record for me. Half the songs felt boring for a long time. Now I thoroughly enjoy the whole thing. Rediscovery Pt II. is in the top 3 SX songs for me.

Symphony X's 4th best album after The Divine Wings Of Tragedy (9.0/10), Paradise Lost (9.0/10) and The Odyssey (9.0/10) IMO.

8.7/10 for me - 'Evolution (The Grand Design)' is the standout song. 'Communion And The Oracle' and 'Egypt' are both also good. 'Absence Of Light' is the weakest song on the album.

A phenomenal work of art! This is in my opinion the perfected form of Symphony X: the best vocal performance, the coolest catchy riffs, the most entrancing keyboard melodies...
This is their peak performance - not The Divine Wings of Tragedy, not Paradise Lost... only The Odyssey comes close to this greatness... But this album here remains unparalleled to my ears!

The highlights are Evolution (The Grand Design), Fallen, Egypt, and Rediscovery Pt. II - The New Mythology, although all of the nice interludes (like Breath of Poseidon) are great too!

I wonder why they didn't....

Haha!

To be honest, I never seriously expected them to do it, even under normal circumstances. While this album is generally respected among fans, it is rarely seen as their best work. In addition, they have never done something like what I described, even for more popular albums like The Odyssey or Divine Wings. As far as I know.

Honestly, this one was a bit forgettable for me, I didn't want to come back to it, and I just don't enjoy Russel Allen's voice.
Edit: after finally coming back to it I realise it's actually a really good album, not their best, but worth of a 7 or maybe more.
