No comments for this? Odd.
Such a good album, they bass heavy riffs practically break my house down.

The guitar and bass tone on this album is insane. It's so heavy... gaddam. One release that has stood the test of time for me.

Yeah, this one never gets old. Like you said, the lowwer tunes are fucking insane here. Also... Holy shit if this album doesn't have one of the best openers of all time. Just that song along makes you say "fuck it, must listen to the whole thing".

I think Effigy of the Forgotten is probably better overall but this still crushes hard and is basically exactly how death metal should sound if you're gonna play it this way... Pretty much metal beyond words

Any way I can buy a physical copy or a high-quality download of this album without shelling out $40+?

I find Morbid Angel's sound is too thin for it to really impact me. This album is produced really well.

It had decent production for it's day but Scott Burns made such an impact back in the late 80's. People talk about which bands defined death metal and who was the most influential but really you don't have to look much further than that guy. MA aside, there wasn't a lot of American DM he didn't produce in the late 80's through to mid 90's.
Pierced is a classic example of that signature bass heavy tone but in the end, I think he overdid it. Everything started to sound the same. For me AoM (and Blessed Are The Sick) are great because they sound very different to a lot of the stuff available at the time.

Listening to this is a brutal onslaught too my ears, it seems like whatever I listen to after this sounds tame in comparison, this is mainly due to the mightily heavy guitar tone and production of course. the vocals are very convincing too, probably my favourite element on the album, it's hard to find vocals that sound this brutal and at the same time understandable.
The truth is I never used to like this album all that much, and originally I gave it a rating of 6, because it was way more complex and technical than the death metal I usually listen to, but what it lacks in melody it makes up for in brutality, technicality, and sound.

I love the ultra-heavy and juicy guitar tone. Otherwise, the album hasn't really convinced me yet. Overall a 7 or a 6 at the moment. It might still grow on me

This is a great album to begin with if your venturing into brutal death metal, it took me a while to get into it, I still don't think the songwriting is all that special but I love the sound

I've always really struggled to get into this band. I get that it's suppost to sound brutal, but it just sounds muddy and one-dimensional to me, which makes for a relatively unmemorable experience IMO.
There are some fairly tasty riffs on this thing and it does do a good job of being super heavy, but that's about it really.

Brood of Hatred almost blew my speakers in the middle section...it's like a nuclear bomb went off. Twice.
There is also a great section near the end of that tune that has measures of 5/4, 5/4, 5/4, 6/4...killer.

This is so good it's unbelievable. Soaring leads, groovy heavy parts. Fast, slow. Heavy sounding bass.

I've been spinning this album all day today and it's been growing on me each time. I'm still torn between this and Effigy for favorite Suffocation though, I find both equally as good in their own way. However, I'm not finding any other album in their discog remotely close in quality to these two albums, perhaps I should give them all a spin over.

I haven’t listened to this album in a bit, but it’s one of the few BDM albums I really love. Are you hearing it for the first time Andy or just revisiting?

I'm revisiting, I always seem to revisit this classic when I'm in the mood for BDM. What's funny is I never used to think much of it, but that was during my introduction phase into BDM, when I finally decided to venture into the less easier listening side of DM. For a while I struggled to go anything beyond melodeath and the Gothenburg scene, where I found band's such as Amon Amarth and Dark Tranquillity my absolute limit of brutality, even standard OSDM was beyond my limits at this point (with the exception of Morbid Angel and Death at push), but my taste had eventually developed to which point I'm now struggling to get back into melodeath.

I would say Breeding the Spawn is very underrated. It gets a hard time because the production is weak, but i think the songs are just as good as those on Effigy and Pierced.

I'm not very versed in bdm, so take what I say with a distance, but I think that Breeding the Spawn is their best material on a full-length, altough I agree that the production restricts it from reaching its full potential. For the best Suffocation release, I'd have to point at Human Waste, absolutely terrific with some of the best pacing in all of osdm. Overall, I'd say Human Waste, Breeding The Spawn and Pierced From Within are my top 3 Suffocation releases.

Sometimes you just need a dose of pummelling brutal death metal, and this album is filled to the brim with it.
