The only Edge of Sanity album that can look the Crimson brothers in the eyes (for one second).

This is a great album, I sort of prefer Crimson more, but this album has so many damn awesome songs. Dan is the man.

Who is the guy that sings Song Of Sirens? It sounds A LOT like Max Cavalera!

My favourite melodic/progressive death metal album of all time. Along with Crimson, for sure, but Crimson sounds more consistent while Purgatory Afterglow sounds more diverse.

For me one of the best metal album ever, still wondering why nobody did review, generaly i like it more then Crimson . Still remember Times when EOS, Cemetary, Sentenced, Amorphis, Anathema , The Gathering, Paradise Lost and Tiamat with genial WILDHONEY ruled the world between 1992 - 1996 !

Lit man this is the profit of being born in 1977 i am really proud to buy freshly recorded and reviewed longplays in early 90's, i will create my list of favourite probably will be interested for you.

Not a particularly special album in their discog imo. Suffers very much from the fact the first couple of songs are great but plummets rapidly after. Generally not a good sounding album either I don't think.

Tempting, but I'd have to decline. I don't care for... any of those bands, really, sans Edge Of Sanity. I mean it in terms of not remembering those bands you listed "ruling the world between 1992-1996." What dimension are you living in that those bands were suddenly popular?

Lit i checked you profile and understand that you are from US and mostly you are interesting in your region so european market can be a little bit wild for you Trust me that in Europe this bands had more respect than Rob Zombie, W.A.S.P., or Queensrÿche

While I still find that incredibly difficult to believe, I don't live in Europe so I really couldn't care less.
Here in the greatest country on earth, they were barely recognized then and they're only recognized by the trve metalheads now. Deservedly so in some cases. The above mentioned bands are much more respected than most Eurodeath. So stop being a know-it-all, know-it-all.

This has got to be my favorite death metal album. I don't have a single criticism. The riffs, vocals, songwriting, lyrics, the eerie ambient bits, etc. What a masterpiece. Truly a hallmark of the genre.

And you are right, thats really the merits of being a 1977 vintage.
Also have to lol at the comments that followed from "the greatest country on earth" in terms of "incredibly difficult to believe" that the mentioned Doom/Gothic/Death bands that all originated in Europe have been widely recognised in the European metal scene back in the mid nineties. Man, this clearly was the case, I have eye-(and ear-)witnessed it.

Regarding the album at stake here: It is their second best for me (by far). In fact, next to their masterpiece, this is the only decent album EOS have ever produced. It comprises all-time death metal classics, such as Black tears (man, we adored this song back in the nineties) and Twilight. That said it sadly also contains several pretty bad songs.
Scores around 8.4 after all for me.

When band turns away from DM roots and start play a bit progressive DM , I like where he use calmer vocals, most I dont like in dm are way how they sing, here we have a bit cleaner vocals, it makes music more emotional. I like it stand out songs Twilight, as intro its awesome, Blood Colored and Black Tears

So damn catchy!

Twilight and Of Darksome Origin are fantastic songs to start off this album. The rest, however, is mostly mediocre with some exceptions (Black Tears, Velvets Dreams). EoS's best work by far are the two Crimson queens
