So the big deal is done! Septic Flesh are back! Reunited and with a new name - Septicflesh - they offer the music world a great experience: "Communion"! A powerful release with many great songs. Once more, the band proved that it never repeats itself. Comparing it with previous releases it's easy to see that this is the most brutal! Now let's analyze it all a bit.

I enjoy this more than their next album, but it's still quite bland. Both sides of their sound a far too underdeveloped, with their metal riffs and melodies being forgettable and quite run of the mill. The symphonies occasionally have good ideas but mostly are under-utilised and one-dimensional, barring "Persepolis". I also disliked both vocalists more than the usual clean/harsh combo which contributes to my overall distaste.

Overall the album is not a bad experience and is much better than my previous encounters with this band, but apart from "Persepolis" there is nothing that stands out as memorable or high quality material. What truly shocks me is this is nearly in the top 50 albums of all time at 8.9, higher than plenty of (even symphonic) masterpieces. Obviously it is well liked but I find this band unusually average. I'll check out one more album before moving on.

Listen to their debut, it sounds way less sterile and soulless than their more modern stuff imo

Septicflesh had different-sounding albums before Communion; the changes were not always successful, but they tried, and they were mostly successful. I mean, if you listen to "Mystic Places Of Dawn", "Shamanic Rite", and "Marble Smiling Face", it almost sounds as if it's a different band, but a very good band nonetheless.

Communion was a brand-new start for them, a rebranding really, and it is the album that gave them the identity that they still have today. In my opinion, it is their best release and the best symphonic death metal album of all time.

Fantastic album. The production on this beast is sublime and Seth's vocals are at his best here. I always get chills when I hear him roar on Anubis. Truly sounds like an ancient god. One of the few albums where I can complain that it is too short. It's not that I think it needs more varied material but that some moments are so fucking good that I wouldn't mind them to be expanded on for just a little while. So far this, and their debut are their best work imo. Which is funny because they sound nothing alike. One of these days I'll get it on vinyl and play it so fucking loud...
