The late 80s and early 90s saw the founding and popularisation of a number of major Southern American metal bands, including the likes of Corrosion of Conformity, Crowbar and Eyehategod. Members from each of these groups joined forces with Pantera vocalist Phil Anselmo, and this unholy union was titled Down. Their debut, NOLA, dropped in 1995, offering one of the most outstanding demonstrations of Southern-style metal riffing ever put together in one package.

Probably my favorite out of the whole Louisiana sludge scene. The infusion of bluesy southern rock with sludge metal misery is heavenly in a perverse sort of way.

Excellent album from the supergroup Down. Down took everything to their sound, from Lynyrd Skynyrd to Black Sabbath.

Perfect work! Sludge and Stoner metal at their absolute finest. Full of genious riffs. I also think that Anselmos vocals here are the best ever.

Excellent debut for the band. I love the consistent heaviness and groove here, though a few songs can get repetitive towards the end. My personal highlights surprisingly enough are the "mellower" ones (which still have a it of guitar-driven aggression at time), namely 'Jail' and 'Stone the Crow'.

Good assessment. I still prefer Down II over this one - every song a winner and the vibe is so angry and sludgy and beyond cynical. I can almost taste the sweat and the smell of the bayou swamp rising over a filthy New Orleans.

Up until now this is the only Down album I've given proper focus and time to let it grow on me. I'm planning the same with the other albums, so this may or may not turn out to be my favourite album from the band.

Pure badassery, groovy riffs and raw power enough to rip your balls off with bare hands. Phil's vocals have never sounded better.

I never likes Aneslmo, and was such stoner or what we call southen metal fan. Swomps and southern life is not my shit.
I listened it and well, not bad, and well I wont be big fan of it, but time to time it can go to spin such things

This album sounds great, it's a hell if a trip, it's like Pantera had a jamming session with Lynyrd Skynyrd whilst stoned

"Temptation's Wings", "Lifer", "Stone The Crow", "Bury Me In Smoke", "Swan Song" and "Jail" are all top quality songs
