The dusk is coming, today was a bad day of January, lot of rain, clouds, and now fog? A really bad day?
I'm not sure that the only reason of that sudden, depressive aspect of myself come from the weather, maybe the reason come from my stereo too... Since some days, I'm listening a new cd that could be the source of my dark days? In February, "My Dying Bride" the master of Doom Metal, one of the most depressive English band, is coming with their new production "Songs Of Darkness, Words Of Light". After 3 years and their last album "The Dreadful Hours", a lot of people are waiting this new album. Is it good? Does it have some changes in relation with their older albums? Well, we will see with that review if this new one could be compared to the several masterpieces of the band?

After the utter success of The Dreadful Hours, often considered as their best album, it was not easy to release something at least as good. Great expectations surrounded Songs Of Darkness, Words Of Light, expectations boosted by the delay due to artwork issues . Believe me, these expectations are not disappointed. Let's not keep the suspense, the last My Dying Bride is at least as good as The Dreadful Hours, and probably even better.

Yeah, this is my favorite MDB album too. They are one of the only bands that mix clean vocals with death growls well, I feel.

A very gloomy atmosphere (Which the band have done throughout their career so easily) created on this album, but such well-structured songs such as the beautiful yet brooding 'My wine in silence' and the powerful epic closer ''A Doomed Closer', not to forget the ferocity of 'The Prize of Beauty'. There is plenty here to regard the album as one of the band's better latter works.

"A Doomed Closer"?

Anyway, I agree with what you said. Actually, I think pretty much every song is brilliant. My favourite would be The Wreckage Of My Flesh and my least favourite The Blue Lotus, but even that song is great still.

Haha, I guess I was thinking the album's closer when I typed that-I do that quite a lot
Yeah, I love each and every song here bar 'The blue Lotus', but even that has it's qualities.

Wow, if your favourite MDB album only gets a 7, you must really dislike them.

Totally. "34..." is probably among my 3 favorites by them. And checked this one out after ignoring it for a while and it's probably the least interesting I've heard by them, though I don't know how I feel about it yet.

Well, THAT is an odd opinion tbh. I find albums like Like Gods of the Sun, The Light At The End Of The World, A Line Of Deathless Kings and everything after that one to be way less interesting. Well, to me everything from the very beginning up to an including this album is very good shit, it just goes slightly up and down sometimes but I like everything on that period.

After a few listens, I can say that this is the best metal album I heard. Such hate, such perfection, such atmosphere can only be achieved by the gods of Death/Doom.

By By death/doom, hello gothic/doom
I didn't like it , good violins and as DerRozo said songwriters are missing here. Arons deep voice needed violins, fits good together, same time somehow all didn't work even I love gothic/doom
Songs stand out: My Wine In Silence, Doomed Lover

This is probably my favourite MDB record just ahead of The Dreadful Hours. It's definitely the doomiest sounding record they've done imo, the songwriting is really dark and powerful, and it's also one of their heaviest sounding albums they've done too.

It helps the fact this is shorter than The Dreadful Hours, I find this to me more consistent and overall more interesting than than The Dreadful Hours. The only downside for me is the album does kind of get a wee bit sloppy with the middle few tracks, especially considering how great the first three tracks were, "The Wreckage of My Flesh", "Catherine Blake", and "The Scarlet Garden", but the album certainly ended on a high with one of the bands best ever songs, "A Doomed Lover".
