Well, they're definitely back. Forget the times of "34,788:Complete" and it's electronic influences, their trademark mood- obscure, heavy, but melodic- is back.

A step forward from "The light at the end of the world" but maybe also a step backwards (in positive), regaining their old sound which is closer to their previous masterpiece: "The Angel and the Dark River". I said previous masterpiece, yes because this album, six years later, is their NEW masterpiece.

Not quite their best, but the reworking of 'The return of the beautiful' is immense.

As I wait for the latest MDB album Im revisiting their latest works and this one is my 3rd fav. This is the true sequel to "the angel and dark river" with all songs creating a chilling atmosphere. The remake of the "return of to the beautiful" for me is the only time a band outdoes their own song twice.

Guess I would disagree... I like this album a lot but my favorite album is easily their debut so for me they haven't touched that grace since then. The production is far more suffocating and brutal on the debut. This version is immense though... just *a bit* less immense for me.

Definately one of their all time best releases. They've always had a great sound though.

A bit to long album when band seems was more DM as doom band, playing doom is one, being doomsters is another one, still deep voice
Song titles: The Raven And The Rose , A Cruel Taste Of Winter and My Hope, The Destroyer (only what stands out musically, anti love song) are awesome, but song structure is bad
DerRoz would understand it , rare person who did or still does ((maybe das disco garden? )
so so album , can be , miss it, get one song OK

I don't get the praise, this album is even boring at times. Good in general, but nothing more.

Naaah, nothing boring here, excellent album.
Songs like Cruel taste of winter, the title track, and in particular My hope the destroyer belong to the best MDB have ever put out.
The deepest of all hearts as well as The raven and the rose are also outstanding.
The other 3 tracks are .... well, debatable.
Overall a 9.0 for me.

Great album, definitely one of their best I would say, and probably their most soul crushing release too, which is saying alot as nearly all of their albums crush souls to smithereens. I would even say this is their most melodic and well structured and also contains some of the best MDB songs, the title track, which is one of the best openers they've ever done, "The Raven and the Rose", "A Cruel Taste of Winter", "My Hope, The Destroyer", and "The Deepest of All Hearts" which are all fantastic songs.

So overall I would have to say this album impresses me the most of their's. Again it falls short of a true masterpiece for me, as again it's needlessly lengthy in parts, which is a shame really.

Beautifully bleak album! "My Hope, The Destroyer" is without a doubt one of their best songs and really resonated with me emotionally.
