Ello there!
My brother told me that he had possibility to drink beer from Saaremaa. I don't know exact name of it but it has got word "Saaremaa" in it's name, it's quite strong (about 10%) and with a little bit taste of juniper tree.
Do you recognize this one? And is it possible to buy it on Saaremaa island only or in whole Estonia too? Sometimes I'm visiting Alūksne (Latvian town south from Võru) and i could drive to Estonia to buy beer.

That's called Saaremaa X (logic... X is the Roman numeral for 10 implying to the volume of the alcohol)...
I think this ale's pointless....it doesn't have a proper taste of beer but seems like some cheap champagne made of sparkling water and spirit plus some more dubious ingredients....
Also, you'll get wasted swiftly when drinking it...if you wish to enjoy beer, then the taste of spirit shadows the taste of beer in Saarema X's case....it helps if you wish to get drunk as fast as possible tho...

And yeh, there's no brewery in Saaremaa (even if there might've been during the USSR)....Saaremaa X is just one brand available everywhere....and the juniper taste? I doubt....better buy some gin....

I think it's available in most shops....you can also try Presidendi 8 (8%)....
Make sure you aren't going to drive for some time after having these ales.....

Well....
Saku Rock (in a black bottle with a star on it)...a usual lager beer with a dark taste of black bread....
Saku Originaal...similar to the previous but the taste is more bitter....
Saku Kuld....that's already better....I suggest you try this one, I kinda prefer it myself....

A Le Coq premium....an usual ale...nothing special...
A Le Coq Special....A Le Coq equivalent of Saku Kuld...I suggest you this one....fine quality.....

There's also an ale called Presidendi....there's the usual green one which's relatively normal altho belongs to the cheaper ale class....Presidendi 8 is good only if you wish to get drunk fast, therefore pointless....

You can also try the following beverages called Taurus, Bock, Saaremaa X etc but you know, Saku and A Le Coq are the most widespread and, altho bit more expensive than for instance Taurus, they're worth drinking....

Best Estonian beer....really dunno....we only have Saku I guess......
Ah, oh right, we also have Pilsner....but I always drink it at bar because it's one of the cheapest ones at bars....the prices of others hit the ceiling.....

Yes, we do have Maxima shops...they're rather good... it's a Lithuanian chain... I visit them quite often, I also have a "Thanks" card which gives me bonus every time I go there.... Although there are some things you can't get there, in general I buy all the necessary food stuff from Maxima....

Selver ain't bad either, tho it's bit more pricy...

I'm sad and sorry to hear they closed them but well...Estonia is also broke and they just didn't have the money any more... hope they can one day reopen the stores....

Well not realy you can get in maxima better shops, I better go Selver, when it was here, there was lil better thinks like better olives, meet, suasege, ewery think litle like in Rīga ''Stockman'' specely after years in Sweden where you can get more international food how here I cant get othing here

For instance groceries cost a lot there....I better get them from Maxima...Maxima also has price-reduction every week which means you save more money....

The source of this joke is that the Latvian cars bear the country mark LV which in popular conscience is sometimes interpreted as "lisa-varvas" meaning "extra-toe"... hence the idea...
And yes... since the only Latvian word an average Estonian person knows is "saldejums" which means ice cream then we imagine they're ice cream freaks...
Generally, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are neighbours and all three are Baltic states but we are light-years apart it seems... Lithuania is another dimension because they were once an independent empire and the last European state to adopt Christianity as a state religion (they still go and sacrifice to forest spirits and elves as I heard tho altho being also devout Catholics at the same time)...
Latvia and Estonia were both once part of the German dominion of the Baltic region... that's the connection... nobody remembers any more it was basically one country here...
And well... in USSR Estonia beat everyone... we were the most successful member state ever with top-notch production and industry, even the Japanese bought our products...
Now we don't produce anything... we buy EU leftovers and our people are emigrating...

Yes, Ewstonia is a membah of teh Ewropean Ewnion since 2004 already... our government has been drop-dead desperate to get the jewro... well, it was not possible for quite some time because of our economical situation and now that the jewro is like the sinking Titanic, the other countries who use jewro are wondering "WHO are those idiots who wish to start using this money!". In fact many people do not want it but when did anyone ask the public opinion anyway?
Our government has spent shitloads of money for the expenses of adopting the new money and destroying the old currency (yes, they collect our own national currency and they're gonna burn it or sth... unlike the Finns who stored their own money in a special facility)
Seems our current government really hates the thing that Estonia was an independent state and that we had our own money (even for 20 years...)
Now we get to the goode olde USSR feeling again... our passports are once again red and bear the inscription we are a Union member state, once again we will have an international money with "stars" on it and once again we'll be handling coins only... I hate jewro... it's smallest bill is already worth quite a reasonable sum. From now on we'll see coins only. And these are heavy and ugly coins. Our money was beautiful, it bore our national symbols and important writers and poets etc. It's all gone now. We only have some freaking sterile "money of the new order"... literally...

Anyway... Italians said that the coming of euro was a catastrophe... well, seeing that our government has faked data, pushed limits and robbed people's money, lost jobs, reduced payments etc. in order to artificially fit the "ready for jewro" criteria, it won't be nice...
So... I can still use our own real money for two more weeks. The jewro itself will be introduced tomorrow. But it will never become "our money". No matter what the propaganda posters say.

@Bad English: I don't use English at Maxima. For Russian speakers there'd be no problem at all. I can use it everywhere from Tallinn to Vilnius. No English needed...

yup... well, we were pegged to German Mark before but the Germans gave it up and from then onwards we were stuck with the "jevro" (I know it might be bad taste for some but people say it here, it's the Russian pronunciation! and in China they have a toothpaste brand called Negro (yes!) but it's ok in non-democratic and former Eastern countries... the westerners are so sensitive lol)

Well, as we were stuck to this money anyway, then we would have had to fluctuate with it even with our own money still legal... But still... the country was not ready for the conversion, the data were faked and the prices rose too high (our leaders had an excuse but it was proven to be fake in the end... not like anyone protests anyway...)... The Russians tourists are now going to forget Estonia because it's cheaper to go to Helsinki with a quality fast train than to be stuck on the Estonian border with car/bus and then spend loads of money here...

The only positive thing is... no money exchange when travelling abroad... oh dang, you still need it when going to Latvia, Russia, Lithuania, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, England... oh well...
